New original shmup: Marvellous Twilight.

Post by Adigun A. Polack »

Hello to all of you awesome shmuppers once more!!! :D !

This is a new shmup project created by me and Richard Eric M. Lope (aka Relsoft), and it is entitled Marvellous Twilight. It is *also* the official entry of Shmup-dev’s current Autofire 2007 Competition that just ended on February 1, 2007. Check out this screenshot:

This game is a refreshing thing in that instead of the usual witches riding on brooms, you get people riding on magical flying scepters... NICE!!!

Also, the longer you hold the fire button down, the bigger and more powerful your shots will be, and when you reach maximum shot power, you will be enabled to use your special attack (provided that your shot power *does not* go down, of course)... not bad!! :D

The keyboard controls are:
  • PLAYER-1 (Princess Rhemi):
    ———————————————————————————
    “W”, “A”, “S”, “D” — Player movement keys
    “G” — Fire
“H” — Enchanted Card Option Formation Change
“J” — Special Attack (Deflector Bubble)

    PLAYER-2 (Princess Teija):
    ———————————————————————————
Arrow Keys — Player movement keys
    “/” (numeric keypad) — Fire
“*” (numeric keypad) — Enchanted Card Option Formation Change
“+” (numeric keypad) — Special Attack (Ikalaser Lock-Ons)
And the key to winning is to use your special attack skillfully and effectively, because this is one TOUGH manic shmup, I’ll tell you right now!! ;)

By the way, gamepads are fully supported here, and two players can play simultaneously in this one!!! :D

Alright. The download for the OFFICIAL compo version of Marvellous Twilight is right here. There, you will get a chance to experience the first two (2) chapters of this original homebrew shmup!!

If there are any errors in this current version that you are experiencing, please do let me know and I can arrange to fix them, but in the meantime, I SURELY hope this game works well on your computer as you are playing it... and I am confident that it should, too!!! :) !

See you all again, and enjoy this fine new shmup!!! (^-^)v !!

I was testing the new additions for it when they were working on it actually. :P
At any rate, it's quite fun, if very scary at points. the ammount of bullets fired at you is quite frankly scary as all hell. loads of fun though, and worth the frustration it can give you.

Gave it a whirl. Cleared the first loop with five lives remaining, score was ~158 million.

Random notes:

It's fun, but there are some issues. The pacing is slooow. It took me closer to 30 minutes just to clear these two stages. The stages are long and the boss fights are long. Especially the second boss, it felt like he was on his loop-around-the-player pattern forever.

The game's kinda easy, too. The Deflector Bubble is insanely powerful. Often by the time the bubble had disappeared I already had (or were moments away from) a new one ready. So it was easy to keep myself protected at most times.

Having the option to change the card's formation at will is nice, I always like it when that sort of thing is done. Unfortunately it seemed useless here, I kept the cards at direct-forward-firing formation throughout the game. Never had a need to change it.

Occasionaly the amount of firepower on the screen would make it hard to see when some smaller enemies got destroyed, but since touching them doesn't kill you, it's not really a problem.

Also, a bug of sorts: even while playing a one-player game I could only use Princess Rhemi, since Princess Teija's (aka. Player 2's) buttons don't map to the controller. I'm playing on a laptop so I don't have a numerical keypad.

It seemed like the enemies fired a bit more bullets in second loop, but the thought of going through the long levels once more wasn't too appealing. That said, I do like the game's concept and it was fun to play through once, it could just use tightening up a bit.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Wow, I like the polish and style in that screen shot. I'll have to give this a shot when I have a chance.

Those also sound like good suggestions Ghegs, I feel like I'm at a location test or something. :) (As though I've ever been to one.)

Thanks for the notice AAP, and good luck in the competition!
