Will Sega's new PS3 VF5 Joystick be good for PS3 shmups?

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

Here's a link on NCSX's site regarding the new upcoming PS3 Virtual Fighter 5 Joystick controller for use with the PS3 console and priced at $88.00 USD.

http://mgrsti3030s.seamlesstech.biz/tem ... lderID=207

Notice the February 15th, 2006 shipping date for the VF5 joystick on NCSX's site? It should've read February 15th, 2007 date instead... ^_~

Do you think it will be a good Japanese joystick setup for use with PS3 based shmup titles or not? (Perhaps modded with Sanwa or Seimitsu joystick and push button parts and one has a true world-class Japanese PS3 arcade joystick to play shmups with.....) ^_~

However, one will notice that this new Sega produced PS3 arcade joystick is powered by a USB cable setup and not by the usual PS3 wireless game controller input method -- should work with a PC setup then via appropiate downloaded joystick drivers for use with Mame emulation purposes...should be fun to hack it to see what it can really do..... ^_~

It should be pretty good. Though I'd rather get the Hori Real Arcade Pro 3, which is due to be released Feb 8th, 2007:

Also with a USB cable hookup, so you could use it on a PC too.

I'd go with Hori Real Arcade Pro 3 joystick setup then...

For twe,

Thanks for the heads up on the new upcoming Hori produced Real Arcade Pro 3 joystick...I did not know about this. Surely, this will be a better option for the upcoming PS3 shmup titles down the road in the nearby future..... ^_~

For Ketsui,

Whenever a major Japanese shmup developer announces their latest shmup title is slated for the PS3 console -- it will eventually happen sooner or later..... ^_~

Yeah, let's be honest-- PS3 will be the best console for shmups in the next gen, just as PS2 was in the last, and PS1 in the one before.

Damnit, just after I get a RAP1, the RAP3 is announced with USB. -_-;;

@Icarus: Well, the PS2 HRAP is a great supergun controller via a PS2>Neo Geo adaptor (that's basically all I use mine for), so just use it for your PCBs. Get the PS3 HRAP for your PC stuff and whatever PS3 stuff comes out.

Hmm, that's quite a few buttons. I missed out on the Xbox 360 DoA stick so this might be a good choice (though not at that price). That said, the 360 pads are great for working without needing custom drivers, heh.

Naah, its cool. I have a PS to PC adapter to use the RAP1 on my PC with, and I'm very happy with it. Looking for a PS to Saturn adapter for the stick now, so I can shmup on the Saturn with it.

If I had known Hori had a RAP3 in the works a while ago, I might have waited a bit longer before splashing out, though. ^_-

A RAP3 with USB support is a brilliant score for anyone looking for a high quality stick to use on their PC shmups. </salesman>

Looks like Hori is keeping with the plastic laminet finish on the top...

Seriously, they make good sticks, but that plastic film sheet layer is such an annoying cost cutting move. My RAP1's plastic layer is warping and wrinkling around where I rest the edge of my hand around the stick, and also a little around the bottom row of buttons...

PS1 was the shmups console of it's generation? Didn't the Saturn have several times the volume of shumps cmopared to the PS1?

I'm not putting my money down until the titles start appearing. There has been great dissatisfaction with Sony's last offering from shmup and indi developers in terms of both hardware and Sony's notoriously stupid decisions and licensing systems (although truth be told, the latter is more common in the US than in Japan).

I'm personally hoping to see developers head to the Wii. Nintendo's pro indi/2D stance, pro "disc-less" release (indi developers may release Wii games via the VC service) easier development platform and cheaper prices are all winners in my book. I'd love to see folks like Cave dump Sony and head to greener pastures.

Let's not forget also that the PS1 lasted a whole 7 years into the life of the PS2. Here in Australia Sony are still pimping the PS2 hard as the party/DDR/Guitar console to end all consoles. I have a feeling with the release of the PS3 and Sony's notorious anti-2D-on-bleeding-edge-tech focus, the PS2 will stick around for quite some time as a budget/2D focussed unit. If Sony can keep squeezing money out of the PS2, they'll do it until it runs dry.

Ok, in all seriousness, it's a Sega produced joystick. This means that anyone who plays seriously will swap out the knockoff stick and buttons, and replace them with arcade parts. Really, it's no different than buying any other joystick.

It proably won't even be good for beat 'em ups :D

It might be me, but I did try a few hori sticks (especially the SC 2 one for PS2) and I think they are quite overrated. On the other hand, I did try the Neo Geo ones and they REALLY seemed flawless, the stick was quick and solid. I believe some sort of fac-simile was produced for PS2 and it's probably just as good even though it looks out of sotck in all the usual internet shops (together with the fac-smile of the Sega Saturn control pad, also for PS2)...

I wouldn't say that just yet, as the last virtua stick for ps2 was fitted with a very fine seimistu stick.

You can use this RAP3 joystick setup with your PC tower with Mame/DosMame/Mame32 emulation as well for the best of both worlds -- PC compatilbility + PS3 compatilibility... ^_~

Pretty exciting, but with money being tight I'd rather try for a Xbox 360 DoA4 stick (since MAME is where I'll be doing much of my shooting anyway)...
