Favorite shmup death animation

Post by BrianC »

What is your favorite death animation in a shmup?

My favorite is Fire Shark. When you die, the music stops, the plane flames up, and then finally blows up. The coolest thing about this is that you can actually shoot while you are starting to blow up.

I don't like the game much, but I liked the little parachuting guy who appears and floats around after you lose your last life in 1944: Loop Master. Pulstar also had a pretty neat death animation, IIRC...it looked like the side of your ship was being torn or slashed, and then the explosion, as if the fuel tank had been set off or something like that...pretty neat detail, I thought. Then, of course, there are all the goofy Parodius deaths (Michael turning into a pork roast is probably my favorite).

The dumbness of the topic set aside.

Mine too.

I also love how the Vic Viper goes down leaving a trail of smoke in the C64 version of Gradius (similar to Gate of Thunder, but prettier). It's such a nice change from the usual ugly Gradius explosion.

I did like the ships in Raiden I&II blowing up into little red or blue pieces.

What about the last boss of ESP Ra.De.?

Just falling to her doom spraying out gallons of blood.

Its not my favourite shooter but the explosions in Ikaruga are a sight to behold! You can almost feel that heat...

Speaking of Ikaruga explosions....the boss deaths in Gradius V are very similar, and I enjoy thoses explosions which intentionally cause the PS2 (or Cube's, in Ikaruga's case) processor to bog down and slow the game.

We are taking about boss deaths too right? Not just player ones...

I know what you're sayin'- slowing it down really adds to the 'occasion'! I've got to mention Metal Black's boss explosions cos they're really something else! Theres a real 'comic book' feel to them but they suit the game to a tee.

Though I'm sure many people haven't seen it, Ibara's player death animation is long and intricate. Makes for a very beautiful death.

I like gradius V's explosions (similar to Ikaruga).

For a non-shmups, Castlevania SOTN has some of the best.

I like the death anim for Donpachi. Simple, yet classy and effective.

Also non-shmup, but Metal Slug 3 has the best death animations ever.

After all these years I still love the way your ship explodes in Defender.

Yeah. Everything about Defender - the special effects and sound effects especially - just scream 'video game'. That's one of the great things about the game.

Not quite a shmup, but I like how the bosses explode on Guerilla War for the NES. Everything flashes like crazy and it makes this great sound. I love it.

the mars matrix ship death is particularly smooth and bright. It gets your attention for a secod if you get lost and die.

Homura, and Radirugi have very cool boss explosions... Homura for the Bloodiest explosion, and Radirugi for it's long, drawn out explosions.
