Halfway (what I feel is halfway, anyway) through Ys: Memories of Celceta. Will wait until I beat the game to write my full, detailed review. But I can already say this :
This game is, the BEST action RPG that I have ever played. Ever. Without any hesitation.
The combat is so incredibly satisfying and adrenaline fueled. plus, the other aspects of the game are pretty much all strong as well, IMO.
I feel like this will become a very special game to me

^ One can only hope
But yeah, if you're talking about the parts where you hunt down all the bugs, those are a pretty common gripe people had with the game. The Wii U version shortened them slightly in response, though doing so kinda created a situation where a few rooms in the game are now completely pointless.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
My main gripe with the game is that wolf Link is just an afterthought, something cool to put on the box and in trailers, but underdeveloped in the game.
Flying in skyward suck was an afterthought.
Sailing in WW? Nearly.. I'm not sure actually, haven't played it for years.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
I thought the wolf sections were fun to play, and short enough no never feel intrusive. I can see what you mean by them being an afterthought though, the core game definitely feels like it was designed without it.
Flying in Skyward Sword is DEFINITELY tacked on, rushed and incomplete. I have no idea why they even included it. I was hoping for an overworld to explore similar to Wind Waker, but it's one of the most superflous elements in any Zelda game, and only serves to make getting anywhere more of a chore.
Sailing in Wind Waker though, is inherently a part of that entire game's identity. Sure, you switch between sailing and exploring land with no relation to the boat mechanics, but the two work extremely well together as a complete adventurous experience. I can understand why people had a problem with the sailing, as getting anyhwere could get really tedious, much more so than in Skyward Sword. But every time I sailed anywhere in Wind Waker, I just enjoyed being out there on the open seas, I really love that game.

Zelda WW still the prettiest ever
sailing section is great and fun..but god damn Triforce parts..fk that lol
Twilight Princess..played it already looong time ago..and back again for new Marathon
Wolf link is fun but kindda boring i think or unnecessary ..but the game itself is super dark and amazing
reminds me alot of OoT

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Zelda II : The Adventures of Link. Holy nostalgia batman! haven't played this one since I was a kid, so I've got a massive nostalgia kick right now. The feelz... I'm at the island temple now.
I still find it really fun actually. I don't know, it just checks the right boxes for me in an oldschool adventure/action RPG. True it has some flaws : some cryptic shit, starting at the temple when game over... but the good outweights the bad for me.
For the cryptic part : well it's easy to go check a walkthrough when you're stuck (I try to do it only aa a last resort though) so it's hardly a problem now. But granted back then if you didn't have nintendo Power or thr NES guide or knew someone who had them, there's just no way you would figure out a couple of these parts, lol.
As for the gameover part : once you get the hammer it doesn't seem like such a big deal. you can get wherever you want rather quickly it seems. Even before then it wasn't too crazy.
As for the dificulty well as of now I'm holding up, let's see if I keep doing this well

Having a hard time not buying Turok 2 remastered. Glorious N64 nostalgia.
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
The island temple is the biggest spike in difficulty for me, especially with the boss there. After that I find the rest of the game pretty smooth sailing. As long as you know where to go in the final temple and don't pick any unnecessary fights with fokkas, you shouldn't have trouble. I think Zelda 1 is by far the hardest of the two.FinalBaton wrote: As for the dificulty well as of now I'm holding up, let's see if I keep doing this well

managed to beat him on my first try (thanks to the tried and true "jump and strike as you're falling down" technique) but he was really taxing, chucking knifes like a motherfucker. I feel like 2 times out of 3 he would kill me, even with full health and magic.Sumez wrote:The island temple is the biggest spike in difficulty for me, especially with the boss there. What are the thoughts on Ocarina's Master Quest? Never been that deep into the regular game. I cleared it and have my petty complaints. So trying Master Quest made me give up at the first dungeon.
* I refer to the Goron area cave, just to be clear. Not the Deku tree. I mean I'm not that much of a wimp.

I just remember it being annoying as fuck because of all the song of time blocks. Looong.
They're slow enough in the main game.

Chucking knifes, yes. That's the island temple boss. Horse riding knight. once knocked out he throws knifes.Sumez wrote: Chucking... knives..? Since you didn't address it, I'll just assume that you ARE playing the Japanese version then. The horseback bosses kan be a bit annoying at times, but are easy if you get them in the right downstab loop.
This is the guy I was talking about:

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
No, US version.
The boss you're refering to is in the ocean palace
He's a bit annoying, yeah. But I find that if you're real quick and well synchronized to get in, then you should get him on the first try every time.
Are you playing on an emulator? or through a framemeister? cause I feel he's the kinda boss on which even a frame and a half of lag is enough to make this a ton harder

If that's the "ocean palace", what did you consider the "island temple"?
The one in a maze?
I only play NES on the original hardware, but I think last time I played the game I was playing on a plasma TV with a very teeny tiny little bit of uscaling lag.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Long ass post since I play way too much [not shmup] games.
Contra 4, I bought old DS just for action games becouse d-pad is too small on dslite and dsi. It's really tough since you can't practice last level, maybe i got too spoiled by save-states, but i'll 1cc it one day.
The King of Dragons, you only have one move, it's a perfect beat 'em up for someone lame at executing moves like me, though I'm so hopeless I sometimes fail to press A + B to bomb, which is why i mapped it to C. Being a shooting kind of gay I play as an archer.
Professor Layton and the Curious Village, something I rarely play, a comfy game, but some of those puzzles make me feel like a total retard.
Tetris DS, again something I rarely play and again something that makes me feel like a total tard, CPU level 4 kicks my ass most of the time.
Side by Side Special 2000, an arcade racer where you can drive AE86 on Akina, though eurobeat is missing.
Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA, I'm going for perfect on all songs(which is not that hard since there is no expert difficulty in the first game), 90 hours in and not even halfway through, though being a wannabe scorer I've spend quite some time playing the same song, but the progress was so awfully slow i started to hate that song.
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, skill grinding through items is very addicting, so i got a bit overleveled and can beat any battle with few units(as long as I don't forget about damn laws).

I'm convinced
I don't think I have that map with my game (I have the non-gold re-release) so I didn't know the names. Either way, that was not the dungeon I was talking about. That one is easy

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Beat Persona 5 last night. It's really good.
But at this point I don't think that's enough to give it a 10/10. At its core its still the same and they haven't done anything to make the game better than P4. The whole social aspect is still mostly of filler content, making it a game for people with too much spare time. Story dungeons are no longer procedurally generated, which doesn't make them any better tbh because they used the opportunity to fill them with dialogue too. They're all incredibly linear and come with gimmicks that aren't fun, just wasting more of the player's time. Story is good, as you'd expect, but there's a whole lot of exposition near the end of the game making me believe there was a lot of potential for more. Battles feel very different from those in P3&4, but it's not necessarily an inferior system. The soundtrack is superb.
I really wish they'd axe the calendar system and make it play more traditionally. All the social links could be incorporated into (optional) side quests and get the point across just as well.
The super boss is apparently only available in NG+. A ridiculous condition consdering how long this game is with its hours of filler content.

I don't mind investing a lot of time in an rpg, I'm fine working through one an hour a night, completing it a year later.
I'm just not as keen on the series writing these days TBH.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
I don't have a problem with a NG+ only boss. You're going to miss a lot of stuff in your first play through anyway because of all the time you have to spend leveling up social stats (unless 5 is way more lenient than 3 and 4). The only way to avoid that is by following a guide, but that just takes half the fun out of the game. In NG+ you can easily finish the rest of the social links and stuff. Why not throw an extra boss in.
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Because in P4's case it's at the very end of the game. A game in which you're locked to a calendar, It's not like the NG+ of Chrono Trigger where you can decide to take on Lavos at almost any point.
