It's more like "don't throw stones if you live in a glass house"

Post more about games AG, less about off topic crap. We have a whole thread for action platformers, need fresh recruits for the task force.

I don't known what you're talking about, I think the kid is right. I've heard GB3 is legitimately awful, poorly written garbage regardless of its women-acting-like-men cast.

It's radioactive waste alright, it's more that AG has taken to tackling xxxx1993 in this thread repeatedly. He's right, about the films at least, but its still another example of really wonky posting.

Police Academy (1984)
Not the first time seeing it, but getting older let's you understand some of the jokes better. :)
Another great 80's comedy, with too many sequels.

I've actually heard the new Ghostbusters is pretty good, from people who's taste I respect, so I'm gonna see it, maybe not in the cinema though.

Colossus: The Forbin Project (1971)

Super (retro) Computer takes over the world.
Spoiler
and wins, making humanity its bitch
This is what we need.

On the same theme I liked it more than Wargames (1983), but I think The Andromeda Strain (1971) wins in early 70's style.

Back to the Future.

It's on Netflix! Hadn't watched it in ages. Still good. Watched it with someone who was -5 when it was released, and many a laugh were had. That's saying something. Something we already knew, but something nonetheless.

You got the best of sci-fi cinema right there.
If you liked Solaris, i highly recommend STALKER. The most sublime film of the genre; does so much with so little, and made me think about SF in a whole other way.

yea I posted about it in this thread when I got to catch a screening of it back in February.

the girlfriend wanted to see it even though I wasn't exactly in the mood yet (knowing very well going into it that it was a yorgos lanthimos flick). she went in expecting it to be more of a comedy than a dark drama and agreed with me after that we shoulda saved it for another time. the first half was much more enjoyable than the 2nd half but as a whole I thought it was worth seeing. there's a handful of unnerving parts that were difficult to swallow and I think it's really something you have to prepare to see. it also helped reinforce john c. reilly as such an underrated actor..which is funny to say now that I'm watching check it out season 3.

going to see wiener-dog tonight which I've been patiently waiting to see for over a year now. todd solondz film that from first appearance seems like the least-solondz-like movie. I read a review earlier in the year and accidentally spoiled something for myself, but I'm still craving it. love dark horse and kind of liked happiness & welcome to the dollhouse.

Weird Science (1985): *****

Now I get why Skykid recommended that to me after I mentioned that other film

That film was so good. Were all teen films that high-quality back then?

Nope. Trailer and every scene from the movie I've seen make it look like the biggest garbage to ever be released in cinema. And complete disrespect for the originals on top of it.

The Force Awakens being anything but a total failure in approval also contributes to my faith completely lost in today's movie goers.

Only saw Bridesmaids and felt it was generally unfunny and hugely overrated.

No, but there were a hell of a lot of awesome ones. If you want good material I'm happy to keep recommending. I'd say go for Weekend at Bernie's for a fun one, and perhaps The Catholic Boys which is very good, but with a slightly more serious edge. Both feature Andrew McCarthy, who was great all round.

Otherwise John Hughes is always worthwhile, so The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles are top picks if you want more of the same (and familiar casting).

Star Trek: Through a Glass Darkly (Nemesis fanedit)
Bionic Bob has done some pretty good TOS movie fanedits, so I figured I would check out his only TNG movie edit. This is already made better than the movie it edits by removing that awful singing scene and all of the B4 crap that didn't flow with the movie. What do we get instead? A darker movie that focuses on Picard vs Clone Picard. It still isn't a great movie, but it is made a lot better when you focus on the darker points of the movie.

No, but leaps and bounds over teen angst movies now. Do they even have any? Soundtrack alone, across the board, almost always better. As per what Skykid said, Sixteen Candles & The Breakfast Club are still hilarious. I watch them regularly. If you want a serious time machine, check out Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Valley Girl. (Both have Nicolas Cage... although one just a very small non-speaking role).

Just watched the latest Star Wars, it wasn't bad, I enjoyed it but I also found some parts of it to be rather convenient or rushed up but it does the job and sets the bar higher than it was left with the prequels although not by much, lol.

The Force Awakens was really good and the people who say it's worse than the prequels because it "doesn't do anything new" will never cease to baffle me.

Even the original trilogy was mediocre. The only reason they succeeded was because the first one was the first (to my knowledge) space-themed movie geared toward mainstream audiences and had good special effects; the plots are predictable, characters are bland, as well as many other things wrong with it. If they were medieval fantasy movies (which they actually could've been with minimal modification), it wouldn't have gotten more than the original trilogy.

TL;DR: Star Wars has never been good, but everyone likes it because apparently special effects > good storytelling.

That's the case between choosing to remake something in HD, and trying something new. If your HD remake doesn't end up being better than the original, then it has less reason to justify its existence, whereas the new thing might fail in execution, but at least it has that thing going for it. I know that TFA isn't a remake, but considering how the events of TFA make everything happened in the OT fairly pointless (Luke crippled the Empire? Too bad, now they've returned and they're bigger, badder and stronger than before!) and shares waaaaaaaay too many plot points with ANH, it might as well be a retelling. If there's that much money to be made by 'playing it safe', then I see no reason why Disney wouldn't keep on doing that. I'd take Doom 3 over a HD remake of Doom 1 and 2 any day, not because I think that Doom 3 is better, but because the originals are good enough and stood the test of time to the point where a HD remake isn't necessary, so I'd rather have something different.

No, I was smart enough to watch the unedited versions.

The prequels were definitely worse, but the original trilogy still wasn't that good.

Movies like the original Star Wars do so much for the imagination. For anyone to say they aren't good, must not have an imagination.

I can see how not everybody must be into either space opera or chanson de geste, but the freshest thing about Star Wars in its time (as well as these days really) was the film being distinctively un-Christian. Doesn't matter one bit whether or not cinemagoers thought of it along those lines; it's been undeniably refreshing (likewise, The Matrix can be viewed as wildly reactionary to it).

People who say it's worse than the prequels are just wrong. People who say it was "really good" are also wrong. There's too much failure in it, sadly; but I liked what was good about it.

The original Star Wars is an inspirational fantasy movie that revolutionised visual and sound editing, and not just special effects. It's one of a handful from the American Zoetrope team that.changed the form and structure of Hollywood filmmaking. It's also an intoxicating original fantasy with atmosphere thick enough to cut and a lore strong enough to overcome the 70sness of it and convince that you really made it to a galaxy far far away. There's a lot of merit in the OT, to say they're not good movies is to misunderstand their place in film development and the enormity of their contributions - and that's without touching on the creative fantasy aspect and its cohesive world of adventure, which in many ways is yet to be bettered.
