i read that thread last night i remember reading the one here a long time ago, its a shame he cracked on page 2 or 3 would have been funny to see some expansion on the story. supposedly theres a room in buckingham palace where the teleported games end up.

Whoever the actors (by the way, Tokiko Kato of Gina's voice doesn't seem like much of a voice actress indeed), recording dubs, radio drama or even commercials needs directing. Same as stage play or live action film. That seems missing in Porco Rosso, at least the original, Japanese cast in the roles of Gina and Fio appears left clueless as to what impression they are supposed to give in particular scenes.

I guess the more experienced actors instinctively filled this gap and "directed" their sessions themselves, but Akemi Okamura debuted A.D. 1992, apparently, which would explain her placeholder performance under such circumstances. Budget constraints, presumably.
BrianC wrote:I was saying they go for big name celebrities rather than lesser known actors that are experienced in voice acting.
Although by Gonzo rather than Disney, by far the worst example of it I've heard was Afro Samurai. Had problems with its animation as well. While I respect Gonzo's various attempts to escape from the anime ghetto sadness, that one was too much of a failure.
I didn't have the same impression you did of the JP voice acting in Porco Rosso, especially when it came to Fio. Afro Samurai was a bit different in that is was a US/JP collaboration.

As was The Big O, which remains having one of extremely few decent US dubs I've heard in anime. The somewhat risky, novel animation style also worked out well in that one. Afro Samurai fell to bits on both fronts.

It's worth noting that Sunrise animated some of Batman: The Animated Series too.

The Yojimbo/Sanjuro set was ordered from Amazon since it was cheaper than the sale price at Barnes and Noble.

I've recently bought Oxenfree soundtrack on vinyl. It's one of my favourite soundtracks and I love how the vinyl looks itself.

Here's a picture from the Interwebz, I don't have photos on me right now: http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0904/6 ... 1479508044

But seriously - if you love some kind of soundtrack, any soundtrack - own it on vinyl. Even if you don't own the player. Vinyls can be beautiful works of art just as a collector's items. And there's a bunch of gaming ones out there - so it sounds like it's perfect for you, guys. ;)

Nice Ristar! The last big MD sidescroller on my shortlist (probably  ). Would be interested to hear your thoughts on it sometime.

Nice LD gets :D

I'd love to buy more anime stuff, but the lack of English language tracks / subs on many discs just holds me back.

Nice, eh?

Also, not-so-cheap-this-time-around haul of other films.

Of which I would particularly recommend those two to any DVD movie collector around...
Spoiler

...for you see, those ARE fairly cheap right now and sport English subtitles to boot (I'm not sure if any good subtitles, mind).

Shame about the Port of Shadows Blu-ray cover, but I don't think all that much of the original movie poster, either.

Yeah, a bit of a hassle with the subs. Can be added using a genlock and a computer. Luckily I enjoy fiddling with those stuffs :P The Ghibli box actully has both Japanese and English tracks. Unfortunately the English track is on AC-3 RF so still gonna need a demodulator (or an older amp that accepts RF modulated AC3).

Damn, had never thought of doing that :O

Are there databases of anime subs (with time codes, maybe?)somewhere? Or do you have to go through the process of watching a subbed version and writing down the subtitles?

Does Totoro LD have the streamline dub? I had that dub on VHS and liked it more than what I have seen of the Disney dub. Nice LD haul. I love Ghibli movies. Not to mention the other stuff like unedited Star Wars. Too bad Lucas and Disney are STILL being stingy about releasing the original versions. Even ET is available unedited now.

Unlike previous collections, the Pink Panther Blu-ray collection includes all of the Peter Sellers movies, including Return of the Pink Panther. The Mel Brooks collections includes Spaceballs, Robin Hood Men in Tights, Silent Movie, Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, History of the World Part 1, High Anxiety, To Be or Not to Be, and The Twelve Chairs.

Won this at a ridiculously easy SW trivia contest:

Traded my old 3DS towards this:

And cautiously optimistic since I loved the MCU shows so far:

You traded a 3DS for a PS4 game? That sounds like an awfully horrible deal.

This is totally opinion only so by all means carry on, but bar Laserdisc owing to its limited success and vintage oddity, does anyone else think buying DVD and BR feels outdated?

Nice, Return is my favourite by far, was miffed that it wasn't included in my DVD box, but have it separately. It's cool how many of the A Shot In The Dark actors appear in it in new roles!

There are tons of subs out there, but you might have search some unless you're looking for mainstream stuff.

Totally. Everyone I know my age or younger (and some several years older) just doesn't buy media at all (except vinyl in some cases), it's all on streaming services for them. They all consider me really fucking odd for it - and especially that I buy DVDs rather than BluRay!

"Why don't you have Netflix?"

In what sense? I think the mainstream definitely agrees with you, as most of the younger generation are happy with whatever is on Netflix or YouTube.

Do you mean as opposed to pirating Blu-Ray rips?

SD DVDs are pretty outdated to me for newer stuff, but for things shot on video tape or SD cameras, its still the best quality you're going to get.

Physical discs are also cheaper than their digital counterparts in general.

Depends. I don't see much point in buying mainstream schlock that's readily available on Netflix, Prime, Sky, etc.

But if you wanna get that specific 70s Italian arthouse cannibal porn flick in best transfer quality the only way may be to import the rare Indonesian DVD release with tri-lingual subtitles.

Some movies aren't readily available on streaming services and some Blu-rays/DVDs of older movies offer superior prints to the ones available on Amazon. Not to mention that some companies started than own streaming services, making sure certain shows and movies never show up on Amazon or Netflix.
