Fighting Game Hype Thread
Re: Fighting Game Hype Thread
^I was just going to post it but I'm glad to see that it had already been posted. Absolutely incredible stuff! I've lost count of the amount of times that I've watched that video by now. Amazing display of skill and a lot of fantastic reads!
Re: Fighting Game Hype Thread
Awesome. It was actually the 2002 cooperation cup that cemented my fandom for this game. So hype and I'm glad the 3s coop cup still exists 14 years laterRuldra wrote:Highlights from a recent 3rd Strike tournament in Japan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwE3aETsUJM
Lots of great comebacks. And holy shit at 5:09!
Re: Fighting Game Hype Thread
Thanks for posting the 3rd Strike Cup. Damn that game is beautiful.
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

Re: The Fighting Games news thread
Europe shouldn't be waiting long for Revelator like they did with Sign.
Re: The Fighting Games news thread
It's really strange how they worded that, almost purposely confusing. I think KI has only gotten better with each season. As far as a fighter that is accessible as well as deep it has a lot to offer. After shadow Jago came out I worry if the pace of the game is about to shift intensely.null1024 wrote:Further down, it mentions the XB1, and MS as of the latest set of system updates seems to consider the XBone a Windows 10 device.BulletMagnet wrote:KI's next "season" coming to Windows 10...but not XB1?
Re: The Fighting Games news thread
It isn't news, but now that I have a CRT and a spare Dreamcast I am going to spend some time trying to wrap my head around Last Blade 2's systems.

This is just rumors, but apparently a new Samurai Shodown game is in the works.
Re: The Fighting Games news thread
if they insist on going 3D, here's hoping it looks better than the forthcoming KOF...

If the new KOF sells well enough for SNKP to be satisfied with the numbers I'm sure they will a new SS game the same bare bones treatment.

I actually really like the graphics...... it could use a bit of touching up but I'm liking the new backgrounds.
SNK was always known to have really great backgrounds

The game looks like it will be very fun. Still hoping they fix the visuals sometime later, it looks so offensively bad for a company like SNK.

Everyone else's faces looked nicer than before [or the same in some cases], so I didn't notice Kyo's dumb-as-fuck face here. God damn.
As for that leak pic, it has what looks like a somewhat earlier design for Sylvie on it.
On the other hand, the original leaked character list has been 100% right so far, so it could just be something someone slapped together from that.
The pic does look pretty jank, but we'd need to see more of the newcomers to know.
I bet shit like this is happening on purpose, to keep people checking to see if the list is right and talking about the game.

Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Re: The Fighting Games news thread
Killer Instinct comes out on PC on March 29th. I've had the Xbone version for years (MS sent me a season 1 pass) but I only just started playing it a few days ago. It's actually really fun and well designed. I might be the only person here who's played the game, so I'll try to explain why.
The neutral game is similar to Street Fighter in regard to spacing, pokes, projectiles, anti-airs, etc, until you finally get in and land a combo. Then it gets closer to anime. Combos can go on for a long time, but you're taking a risk whenever you choose to extend it. This is because around half of the damage you deal during a combo comes in white life, which only gets permanently depleted once you finish your combo with an "ender" (a heavy special or EX attack, basically). There's also a meter in place that prevents combos from going on indefinitely. Basically, once you've done 100 points of damage, your opponent will spin out and you won't be able to cash in on that white life. The combo meter can be reset in a couple of ways, though, one of which is by activating Instinct. This is pretty much identical to V-Trigger in SF5. Every character can immediately cancel an attack and enter a powered up state for a limited time once they've filled up their gauge (by taking damage). You can use this to try and extend your combo, or you can sit back, activate, and use whichever power up your character gets as a threat. It's almost exactly like V-Trigger.
But long combos are risky because of Combo Breakers. You use light, medium, or heavy normals to cancel into specials, but if your opponent predicts which attack you'll use, they'll break your combo and regain the white life you've been building on them. Combo Breakers aren't get out of jail free cards, though. If you try to break with the wrong strength, you'll be locked out from breaking again for the next 3 seconds, which gives your opponent the opportunity to go for optimal damage. If you're playing against someone who's getting predictable with his Combo Breaker attempts, you can go full yomi and attempt a Counter Breaker. If you're successful, this will also reset the combo meter and lock your opponent out from breaking for the next 4 seconds. That's a pretty big payoff. If your opponent doesn't try to break your combo, though, you'll whiff the counter and be wide open for a punish. So this is similar to bursts in an anime game. Some people might not like the guessing involved with breakers, which is understandable, but I think it's an interesting system. It's just another layer of strategy.
I also think Capcom would be smart to copy almost everything about Killer Instinct's structure and apply it to Street Fighter V. It has fairly standard single player modes (KI's story mode and survival are much better than SF5's), the online play seems a little better (similar idea, but better execution), the online ranking structure is better in some ways (matches in the top league are always FT2), character accessories, titles, icons, and colors are unlocked by simply playing as them and completing simple challenges (eg. use 10 overheads), instead of having to grind through a thousand survival fights, etc. Really, the only thing that SFV does better is how you can unlock every character for free by using the money you earn in-game. KI characters have to be bought with real money no matter what (aside from whoever's currently free to play). Characters may actually be too easy to unlock in SF5, so I can understand the fear of not wanting to give players everything for free, but they just have to find the right balance. A good F2P structure benefits everyone imo.
Anyway, I just wanted to say to give this game a shot if you have a PC that can run it. It's free to play, so you have nothing to lose but disk space. If you're interested, you should check out this excellent guide that thoroughly explains everything about the game. Like I said, I only started playing a few days ago, so I'm still new to the game. I just think it's pretty fun. And so does Tokido!

Re: Fighting Game Hype Thread
^ Awesome, I'll watch those asap. The 2012 ST invitational might have been the best tournament at EVO that year. I think that was when Infiltration steamrolled everyone in SF4, so the "main event" wasn't very exciting to watch.
In other news, the first Street Fighter V major just ended. Final standings:
1. INFILTRATION (Nash)
2. Tokido (Ryu)
3. Mago (Karin)
4. Haitani (Necalli)
5. brenttiscool (Ken)
5. Nando (Mika)
7. GO1 (Chun)
7. SonicFox (FANG)
The matches that stood out the most to me were both of the Haitani vs. Justin Wong bouts, and Haitani vs. Tokido. But I'm sure I'm forgetting some stuff, those were just today's best matches. (Another highlight was seeing Tokido take on America, the land of the free.)
I'm glad that everybody really likes SF5. I was a little worried about the game at first, but now I feel exactly like Nemo. He was just on Daigo's stream, and when he was asked about SF4 vs SF5, he said that he liked SF4 because it was a very deep and technical game where the more time you spent grinding, the stronger you got. SF5 on the other hand is very simple to pick up, so you don't need to grind forever to be competitive. I thought that making the game less demanding might turn off the god-tier players that loved SF4's depth, but it seems like that hasn't happened. And it clearly isn't making much of a difference when the same guys are still cleaning up. Infiltration's job as CPT's gatekeeper is starting early this year.
edit: Oh, and here's Homestay Akira (aka KTL-NAL) & Chinpan battling for the highest rank in Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown:

I really admire players like Homestay (& Daigo, Tokido, etc) that can play so many games at the absolute highest level, especially across multiple genres (fighting, STG, rhythm, etc). You have to be a genius to pull that off.
