What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
yeah, i absolutely love REmake. i hadn't played it before the ps4 version came out and it near enough instantly became one of my favourite games.
honestly blinge, the new controls are awful whenever the camera angle changes it completely messes up which direction you're going in. the tank controls are easier.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Need to go back and replay REmake - got the difficulty kevels confused last time around and found out I'd only actually completed it on Easy. Great game.
Currently playing too much Bomb Jack. Goddamnit this game is stupid addictive. A true arcade classic.
Played about an hour of Dishonored 2... still not feeling it.

^ yeah capcom added a new easier difficulty with the remaster, so this happens to a lot of people.
I'd be interested to know just how easy lowest difficulty is now..
Fair point man but I've seen gameplay of people using the new controls to insta-turn. That's huge.

Is that cause you're used to the tank controls?Immryr wrote: honestly blinge, the new controls are awful whenever the camera angle changes it completely messes up which direction you're going in. the tank controls are easier.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
nope, i'm definitely not used to tank controls. it's cause when you go from one camera angle to another the games idea of which direction up is changes. it's fine as long as you keep holding in the same direction, but when you need to change direction or adjust you have to fully let go and then press the new direction. for instance if you're going up then change camera angles and you want to turn left relative to where you are headed.... that left might now be the same direction you were holding for up on the previous screen. it's pretty odd.
the instant 180 can be done with the tank controls, was that not in the gamecube version? you just press back and..... something, i forget what. it's the same as in RE4 etc. or do you just mean, you don't have to turn incrementally?

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
No i dont just mean the quick turn, I mean it's instant, it looks like the character model simply flips over in about 2 frames, that's way faster than the quick turn
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Dunno if the PC version has tank controls, but they definitely sound more preferable to me in order to not have to deal with the inability to control my character between camera angle transitions.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Oh, I just had to switch controls to Original. It really plays much better with the """"outdated"""" tank controls. Figured out you can light zombies on fire with the fuel canteen, makes me feel a lot more safer when traveling around the mansion. Most cutscenes just have me in stitches with the voice actors trying really hard to sound emotional while their in-game faces won't move an inch. And an obligatory 'be careful' at the end of every interaction between Chris and Jill. Doesn't get any campier than that.

funny thing is, I wouldn't be surprised if avoiding this is exactly why the Resident Evil series stuck with tank controls for several games, and maybe also why Onimusha has them, too.

SNK vs Capcom Card Fighters Clash [NGPC].
Playing the SNK version.
Shit's fucking nifty. Some of the text is really awkward, but it's a fun little card game.
kind of wish NGPC emulation wasn't so damn iffy [can't reliably use auto savestate for when I close a game because it tends to screw things up, I'm using ngp.emu on my phone]

Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

My favourite bit of RE cheese is actually textual, and I think sadly underrated! From the original PS1 game:
Chris finds a colleague's brutally decapitated, mutilated corpse
"It's Kenneth, from the STARS Bravo Team!"
Closeup on body

^ HOOO... AT CAPUCOM, THEY SPEAK A GOOOD ENGRISH

Thief 4. It’s quite good. I abandoned it pretty early on when I first picked up the PS4 for reasons I can’t quite remember, but having tried (and for the moment, failed) to get into Dishonored 2, and this being on sale for £3.99 I decided to give it another go.
One thing it does amazingly well is to make Garret an actual, physical presence within the world. It doesn’t have that slidey feeling typical of most FP games. Looks nice, sounds wonderfully atmospheric, and AI is just at the level it needs to be – just on the correct side of dumb. It wasn’t always apparent when I would or wouldn’t get spotted in the Dishonored games, which makes (personally) for a frustrating time in this sort of game, I never have that uncertainty here, just as I remember from the originals. Only done the first two missions so far, but actually itching to get back to this. A very pleasant surprise.
Also picked up EDF for £8.99, despite never fully engaging with any of these I couldn’t resist for that price. I have a massive backlog though, really need to stop buying stuff. Think there 25 games on the HDD that I haven’t even touched yet, including Invisible Inc, Lumo, Mantis Burn Racing, Pac Man DX2, Pang Adventures, Leynos, Volume…

Sword of Vermillion - Genesis
I picked this one up this weekend, having never played it before I was a little underwhelmed upon first boot-up....but something keeps me playing. The random encounter/battle system is kinda awkward and the enemy death sounds are kinda hilarious, but I'm strangely glued to the screen.
I started playing a bunch of games over the last couple weeks, but haven't had much time to play....maybe I spread myself too thin and need to narrow it down
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out - NES
Legend of Zelda - NES
Act Raiser - SNES
Doom - PS4

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Yakuza 0
Finished the main story last night. I'm only at 40% completion after 50+ hours, so I've still got a ton of stuff to do. I want to go for 100%, but that might get derailed because Nioh should arrive in just a few hours. I could have used more space in between all of these big RPGs (Yakuza -> Nioh -> Nier -> Persona 5)...
Anyway, Yakuza 0 is one of the best games in the series. The story and characters are great, but I'm not sure if I'm a fan of the new combat system. The different styles may give you more options overall, but each one feels limited in comparison to the characters from 4 or 5. I don't think Kiryu's as fun to play as he used to be, but maybe that's because I haven't leveled him up enough. I put way more money into Majima because of all the time I spent running the cabaret club, and he gets more fun as you get deeper into his skill trees. The Slugger style for example is pretty annoying to use until you unlock the ability that stops your attacks from bouncing off walls, so hopefully Kiryu gets better too. Maybe they could have made his real estate management more interesting.
My series ranking, just for fun:
Story: 2 > 1 > 0 > Ishin > 4 > 5 = 3
Combat: Ishin > 5 > 4 > 0? > 3 > 2 >>>>>>>> 1
Overall: 2 = Ishin > 0 > 4 > 5 > 3 > 1
(I haven't played Kenzan, Dead Souls, or the Black Panther games)
I only put 1 at the bottom because they've made huge improvements to everything since that game came out. If the remake is good, I'd probably put it above above 0 or 4. Honestly though, maybe I rate 2 so highly because of nostalgia. I haven't played it since it came out (10 years ago, god damn) and the only thing I really remember about it is the story and some setpieces. I wonder if it really holds up against the newer games, at least as a complete package.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
i finished nier last night, it was a bit of a disappointment imo. the story could almost be good if the writing wasn't completely terrible, lots of things don't really make any sense, all of the bits which are supposed to be touching and sentimetal are just stupid etc. the combat is just a bit too basic, the final boss fights are more like scripted events than actual boss fights, the weapon upgrading system is pointless, 99% of the game is fetch quests....
despite all this i didn't totally hate it.... it's just disappointing in that it could have been really good with some, admittedly fairly hefty, tweaking.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Isn't part of the problem because Nier is set within the Drakengard cannon?
I'm gonna pick up Nier at some point but I also hear there's two versions..
Some research needed first then.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
there's Nier Gestalt and Nier Replicant, with Gestalt being the X360 version featuring an older player character (e.g. Papa Nier) and Replicant being the PS3 version which featured a young boy as player character (e.g. Brother Nier), but the US releases have the older character on both version by default because of rugged old father figures being more appealing to Western audiences than prancing ladyboy oniisans, especially if you consider games like The Last of Us and Bioshock: InfiniteBlinge wrote:Isn't part of the problem because Nier is set within the Drakengard cannon?

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
To be fair, the rugged old father figure is one of the best points of Nier. Even if you could play Replicant in English, I'd still go for Gestalt any day. I really have my reservations about the pornbot MC of the sequel.
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
how is the main character of automata any worse than kaine?
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
She's not. Except Kaine is not the main character.
Honestly, Kaine has some interesting depth to her, even though her immediate characterization is a bit dumb, and I don't doubt that 2B will have the same.
Also, Laura Bailey did an absolutely great job with Kaine.
All I'm saying though is that Papa Nier immediately wins a few points from simply being a scruffy old anti-hero kinda guy. The fact that he's not your standard cookie cutter JRPG hero helps making the game stand out. They even made him really ugly, which is surprisingly uncommon (or at least usually played out like this)

That cartoon reminds me of a conversation with my brother, when we discussed why would warriors and demons in japanese games look like theyre dressed for a emo rock band.Sumez wrote:She's not. Except Kaine is not the main character.

Alien vs. Predator (AC)
Finished with 2 continues, trying to get it down to 1 credit. One of Capcom's more fun beat-em-ups because of the serious pain you can dish out with combos- OTGs (Predator Warrior's slide can be followed up with Up+Attack to link to a flying kick), juggles, you name it. The stage 3 "Forced Assault" BGM is reused several times and never gets old because it's so damn awesome. This theme has that "shit's about to get real" mood to it.

I'm thinking of picking up Tales of Beseria later this month. Keep me posted if it is indeed as good as it has been made out to be in this thread.
It's really an immaculate game. Wonderfully deep yet constantly reactive. Perfectly paced and varied too. Perhaps the only thing I would change would be to add a TLB in the form of a suped up razor claws, since that unpredictable duel is my favorite in the game. But regardless it's probably the closest I've ever played to a "perfect" video game.gameoverDude wrote:Alien vs. Predator (AC)

@ Marc: Good to hear Thief 4 works for you; I've been mulling over getting that one on a sale, but everybody bitches constantly about how the item arrows are in preplanned contexts only (as if Deadly Shadows didn't have that sort of problem).

I only played the demo of Thief 4, but it was absolutely horrible. The full game has to do a LOT of things differently to work.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Knee deep in Phantasy Star IV.
Gat dayuuuuum...
This game is just as good as the best SNES RPGs(and might actually edge them out). And you better believe it! And no, this is not my inner Sega fanboy talking. I actually am a massive Final Fantasy fan, with all of 1, 4 and 6 being extremely dear to my heart. I have like, obssessive love for those games. I have very precious memories tied to them. They are the games that made me a hardcore gamer. Suffice to say, I worship them.
Yet, Phantasy Star 4 is so fucking incredible... the cool sci-fi setting, the nice story progression in the series, the blazing quick combat and menu selection, the combo attacks, the frickin MACROS (what a formidable function btw), the side quests, the anime artstyle, the freaky mutant monster designs, the quick story pacing... the game has it all. I could go on and on and on.
Couple of things I will go on about in more details :
-the game is just so damn QUICK. Like, the FF games are quick, but this is just on another level. Healing your characters is real quick. The combat, thamks to MACROS, is lightning quick. It's like, insane. And you know it's good for an RPG to be snappy.
-speaking of quick, the game(the story I guess is what I'm saying) advances at a brisk pace. The dungeons are not too long (they never oustay their welcome) and all objectives(missions) lead to major development in the story line. All HUGE and dramatic and badass. So there's no filler here. The story progression really isn't fucking around... no set pieces, no forced mini-games. I like it, it's a refreshing change from FF. (Don't get me wrong, I like the Opera scene in FF6. It's just that, there's more than 1 way to do a good RPG, ya know?). Another point regarding the quickness of the storyline development : the dialogue is 10 times as fast in Phantasy Star IV as in FF games : no speech bubbles and characters moving around the screen here. Just a 30 second slide-show of manga panels and BING, BAM, BOOM! You're done.
So I will summarize by saying : 10/10, must play game. It deserve it, I don't care what anybody will say.

Srsly, what a BEAST of an RPG
