Finally sat down and started playing Arrange A....what is it about this game and Stage 5? My god, I can no miss all the way until then, then things just go nuts. At the very least, I can destroy the lasers in Arrange A (thank god). I've managed to make it to the stage 5 boss once, only to get utterly raped. Still fun though, and I have a feeling I'll be coming back to this even after Black Label comes out. Definitely the best mode in the game, probably the first time I've enjoyed an Arrange mode more than the original arcade game.

I've been pushing myself to clear the first loop in 1.5 in Power style before BL comes out. I've done it in Strong and Bomb, but I want to finish at least the first loop of "the real game." I'm having the same problem. No miss up to stage 5 and then drop one or two on the lasers, and then the rest on Shooty at the end. Nothing worse than sacking my bomb on the first pattern and then getting raped in the final stretch. Never played a Cave game where I could get to the final boss with three lives and still not clear the first loop.

I have to yet to play more than a single credit on the Arrange modes though. I don't like the pacing of Arrange B's stage-by-stage progression, and I played too much DOJ to care about playing the remix in Arrange A.

TBH, Arrange A isn't really all that much like DOJ. It's basically standard DFK Power Mode with Hyper items and a slightly changed-up hyper mechanic (shoot bullets in Normal hyper mode to add hits to your counter, and then cancel them and turn them into stars in Boost hyper mode).

8 1/2, I have to agree that Arrange-A is not much like DOJ. Sure it has the in-between Stage artworks and collectable Hypers, but that's about it. You should definitely give it some time, its the preferred mode for a lot of folks for good reasons. For me, I like how it rewards you for playing dangerously while in hyper by not canceling bullets. Makes things seem more interesting than 1.5 where for the first 4 stages I'm just canceling bullets and feeling invincible.

Black Label is too soon, they sould have held off in my opinion, no wonder DFK1.5 sold so poorly.

Fair enough, I'll give it another shot. Like I said, I've spent no real time with it, so perhaps I was too hasty. The recent rush of releases is kind of overwhelming. Not that I don't welcome a ton of great new shmups, but it makes it hard to focus. I keep wanting to get back into Ketsui too, but now it looks like it might be May or something before I'm done with BL, MMP/PS, Eschatos, Bullet Soul...

I don't think BL has anything to do with that, they didn't even announce it until 1.5 had been out for about a month or so, I believe. Did DFK 1.5 really do that bad? Based on what I've seen/heard, it sold pretty well within normal figures (10-15K copies or so) expected, bar exceptions such as DeathSmiles.

They announced BL the day DFK 1.5 was released.

I gotta say, after quite extensive time with this game, I agree with you.

Now, for me, not the first time I've liked an arrange mode more than the main... Ketsui, I actually liked X mode more than the main game. Main game is great and all.... but just like with DFK here, to me, it seemed like they took an already superb game, and made it even more amazing.

And with the patch, it seems also like Arrange B went from being broken, to being awesome like it should. At least, I THINK so. Unless someone comes up with some crazy exploit. but the scoring seems different to me.... it feels alot like I really need to be trying to cancel alot of bullets/grab chips, as opposed to just "kill everything". It seems like if I JUST focus on killling everything, I dont score well at all. That is definitely a good thing.

And for the heck of it, random video of it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBZI1zqDlnY

Stage 2 this time. Recorded it live because I just dont trust the replay feature with this mode.

Edit:

I would just like to say, the stage 4 alternate midboss, with the damn lasers, is one of the most blasted annoying things ever, at least in this mode. Not used to fighting this jerk.... he never appears for me in the other modes, I usually only get the first 3 midbosses to change.

Gotta find a good way past this guy.... his laser attacks just totally outdo mine and crush me (using B ship, with all "options" off, as I usually do).

Very..... very annoying.

Edit2:

WHY IS THE FIFTH BOSS SUCH A COMPLETE NIGHTMARE?!?!?

I'm pretty sure "WHYYYYYY?!?!?" sums up that fight in this mode.

Yeah, so much so that I went out on a limb and decided to sell 1.5 on ebay (ON EBAY NOW) since BL Retail I have pre-ordered. I know I'm taking a chance since I've never played BL, but a few peeps I respect seem to have liked BL better between the two, at least comparing pcb versions. I don't really like the autobomb in 1.5, still like 1.5 don't get me wrong, just crossing fingers I like BL more... :|

Isn't BL an append disc? Meaning you still need a retail copy of 1.5 to play it?

Looks pretty cool. No autobomb apparently is a plus. But it looked like Bomb/Hyper stock was shared?

Possibly it's similar to the bomb/hyper stock behavior of Black Label. I tried to describe it for each BL mode here:

Some of the stuff in this thread should probably be moved to strategy.

gibber... drool...

Lots to take in there. What's going on with that red meter in the upper right? What are those symbols that appear in what seems to be the second player's side bomb tray? What exactly is the player doing to cancel bullets at key moments?

I think you should familiarize yourself with DFK Black Label to understand what's going on. The gauge at the bottom right is the Red gauge, basically a rank meter that enables the scoring system to a large extent. The bomb slot stuff counts chips picked up recently; not sure what for. Killing large enemies cancels their bullets, picking up flashing bees cancels all bullets on the screen.

EDIT: Oh crap, did I say bottom-right? I meant top-right. >_>

I think it looks...weird. I love the Tiger Schwert ship, the lock-on beeps, the orange lock-shots... it looks and sounds so odd mixed with the star-collecting sound, the secret boss jingle, and the constant "desu" of the announcer. Also, the front shot of the lock mode in Ketsui is a rapid shot, not one of these creamy streamy dick lasers of DFK

I´m fine with the excessive, glowing kitsch of DFK, but somehow mixing it with the moody and refined atmosphere of Ketsui doesn´t do it for me. And I think it really underlines how badly designed the bosses and their patterns in DFK are, especially compared to the original game, where pretty much every single pattern was memorable.

But to me it means yet another Ketsui arrange OST is coming out, which is always good news. Not every track on the Ketsui X Arrange was an improvement, but I loved the rendition of the Canal Fleet stage 3 theme, which kept the monotone, droning quality, but added more power and expressiveness.

...and I´m sure actually playing it is fun. I always loved the more open, flowing scoring systems of Ketsui, Dangun or Progear. I think I would just love to see an actual sequel after all the love CAVE is giving it with this arrange mode, merchandise stuff etc.

Ah ok, the bee-canceling makes it all make sense. I couldn't figure out what the player was doing to make all the bullets go away at seemingly random times. I wonder if there's some short term chain bonus involved with those chip counters at the bottom? Can't figure out why they're counting those otherwise as it's obviously not a stage-long counter, and seems to only be counting your most recent collection. Hard to really tell though in youtube-resolution. I do indeed plan to start on BL and move on to Ketsupachi after I get the basics down.

Picking up yellow bees also cancels everything on screen, but you get small star items. Nabbing a bee while it's flashing white (transition) yields large stars.

New PV video (#2) up on Xbox Marketplace. I was very excited at first, because I figured that the DLC had gone live.

Edit: It was that video put up on the Black Label Arrange site a month or so ago. But now made available in the 360.

From NSCX's description of BL: "Updated ship selection process where players choose the fighter followed by the choice of bomb-type, power-type or strong-type (easy, medium, hard)...

Why even write something like that? NSCX always comes through with fast shipping for me and good service, but jeeeeeeeeez, their info blurbs really kill me sometimes.

Have you played BL yet?
I could be wrong, but IIRC strong type starts out with second loop patterns.

Speaking of NCSX, looks like BL has not shipped out as of yet... My credit card has yet to be charged. Pre-ordered 23, long before cut off date which is today, which lists pre-orders made from today on, will not be at NCSX until the 8th or 9th. I was hoping I may somehow be able to play tomorrow. Worse case scenario, they get the games tomorrow and are able to ship out same day, I will get it by Friday since ground only takes one day where I'm at. Want to play this shit now.
