It should tell you more about cave fucking up than your friend being an asshole. Perception.
It doesn't matter how awesome the game is supposed to look and feel on a tated arcade monitor, when a random dude buys it because "hey ikaruga is da bomb" he sees a tate game that doesn't even fill his screen (not talking about the SDTV deal, just the default options), that does not have smoothing on by default IIRC (can't remember that one for sure) etc, basically a product that looks like a garbled mess out of the box. Yes, you can fiddle with the options to make it look good on a HDTV at least, but a random person wouldn't give a fuck even if cave didn't hide the actual fucking option settings.
In the end, mega man 9 is a well done coherent throwback to 8 bit cute graphics. Guwange is a mess that takes some serious digging and knowledge to look acceptable.
By the way, if you routinely express yourself in 4chan memes please don't reply, I will ignore whathever you have to say.
To be fair, I don't think njiska was attacking the appeal of Megaman 9 graphically, as much as he was using it as an example of hypocrites within communities that think all shmups are crap because they have poo graphics and yet play subpar games (again in form of graphics and not necessarily gameplay) themselves. "Perception", as you should know, comes with various perspectives.
I dont deny that Guwange XBLA is not as perfect as we'd all like it to be, but half of the complaints including what you've just covered are bull. The options have not been hidden, people just can't read. I read, and found the options straight away and since then have pretty much played it out of the box with small changes, and to me it looks fine for visibility.
Then you say that it doesn't matter how the game is supposed to look and feel on a tated arcade monitor, but a game originally displayed on said monitor should remain accurate when ported. Just as 4chan trolls use memes and expect bloom and awesome graphics on their HDTV, ports or otherwise emulated forms of games should be doing their job properly and do so accurately, no more no less. This includes retaining aspect ratio. In this I understand Cave has not completely succeeded in this, but its not an irrelevant point of concern to be shrugged off in favour of doing the impossible for people who would most likely complain about the game for its 2Dness anyway.
In the end, Cave can only do so much (even without these issues) to please the majority and really the assholes are being just that if the games look "crap" because it's 2D sprites on a set dimension. I cant speak for the rest who you have quoted, but I reserve my right to have a laugh at ignorant people who complain that they cant stand game X because it "looks like a GBA game".
