On the one hand, it has stylish art that might be appealing for someone browsing the XBLA shop, but on the other it has complicated mechanics with the Shikigami which would probably throw off and frustrate most novice shmup players. Nothing hasn't been said already about the confusing screen options menu which half of the shmup community even has trouble navigating.

Also curious if that "Fun Guwange News" ever materialized the other week. I'm expecting an iPhone/iPad port in the near future seeing as how DDP-R was a huge success.

What will really be interesting is when the following week's numbers get released. Any game can get off to a good start, but it's sustainability that counts.

On that subject - Super Meat Boy was released a week or two before Guwange, right? It wouldn't be that much of a feat for Guwange to have beaten an older release.

Of course, Scott Pilgrim dominates because that was the week it was on sale for Gold members...

Yes. there is a video on the superplay website, I believe. It's with Gensuke.

FWIW, My review on GamesRadar is up:

I most definitely hate your favorite shooter.
For the sake of our own sanity, let's not even talk about Psikyo, Battle Garegga, or DDP DOJ with each other.

there are only 2 other game modes: “Blue” (based on a rare Japanese arcade variant that re-adjusts the game’s difficulty)
The blue version was never in the arcades, it was a matsuri version.

That's the problem with those lists on Major Nelson - they don't show figures. There could be a massive gap between what's at no.1 and what's at number 3. Without figures, those lists are pretty much useless when determining sales numbers.

I'm aware of that, but it *was* arcade-based. A general game site review isn't the best place to get sidetracked into explaining what the Cave Matsuri is and why/how exclusive stuff only shows up there, so I simplified the explanation. It's still a rare variant everywhere outside of XBLA, no? :)

Not even in the Top 20. This doesn't bode as well as I'd hoped. Then again there were a lot of good sales going on.

On other forums I post on, lots of people were complaining about the graphics looking like a GBA game or something. Guess that turned some people off.

What's even better is when one of these assholes praises Mega Man 9/10 for it's retro looks.

It should tell you more about cave fucking up than your friend being an asshole. Perception.

It doesn't matter how awesome the game is supposed to look and feel on a tated arcade monitor, when a random dude buys it because "hey ikaruga is da bomb" he sees a tate game that doesn't even fill his screen (not talking about the SDTV deal, just the default options), that does not have smoothing on by default IIRC (can't remember that one for sure) etc, basically a product that looks like a garbled mess out of the box. Yes, you can fiddle with the options to make it look good on a HDTV at least, but a random person wouldn't give a fuck even if cave didn't hide the actual fucking option settings.

In the end, mega man 9 is a well done coherent throwback to 8 bit cute graphics. Guwange is a mess that takes some serious digging and knowledge to look acceptable.

By the way, if you routinely express yourself in 4chan memes please don't reply, I will ignore whathever you have to say.

To be fair, I don't think njiska was attacking the appeal of Megaman 9 graphically, as much as he was using it as an example of hypocrites within communities that think all shmups are crap because they have poo graphics and yet play subpar games (again in form of graphics and not necessarily gameplay) themselves. "Perception", as you should know, comes with various perspectives.
I dont deny that Guwange XBLA is not as perfect as we'd all like it to be, but half of the complaints including what you've just covered are bull. The options have not been hidden, people just can't read. I read, and found the options straight away and since then have pretty much played it out of the box with small changes, and to me it looks fine for visibility.

Then you say that it doesn't matter how the game is supposed to look and feel on a tated arcade monitor, but a game originally displayed on said monitor should remain accurate when ported. Just as 4chan trolls use memes and expect bloom and awesome graphics on their HDTV, ports or otherwise emulated forms of games should be doing their job properly and do so accurately, no more no less. This includes retaining aspect ratio. In this I understand Cave has not completely succeeded in this, but its not an irrelevant point of concern to be shrugged off in favour of doing the impossible for people who would most likely complain about the game for its 2Dness anyway.

In the end, Cave can only do so much (even without these issues) to please the majority and really the assholes are being just that if the games look "crap" because it's 2D sprites on a set dimension. I cant speak for the rest who you have quoted, but I reserve my right to have a laugh at ignorant people who complain that they cant stand game X because it "looks like a GBA game".

Thank you, Banshee. You completely and accurately grasped the point I was trying to make in an eloquent fashion.

Well you certainly live up to your name Mr. Vagrant. I admit to sometimes being rather blunt and crude myself, but was that level of hostility and the completely out-of-left-field 4chan reference really necessary? Is there a reason why you decided to try and out right attack my credibility? I certainly don't remember picking a fight with you before.

Yeah, just get it unless you have a 4:3 monitor. In which case, probably don't get it.

i have a tated 4:3 CRT that it actually plays really nicely on. it still doesn't fill the screen, but it's nice. it's also not horrible playing normally if your screen is big enough. just gotta sit a bit closer, hahaha.

it's worth the $10 regardless imo.

I can't TATE my CRT, since it's too large. I really wish they would patch this thing, so I could get more of the screen filled.

Hell, if they did that, then I could make it fit my 16:10 monitor better.

I think someone suggested that we add Blue Mode/360 Arrange scores to the existing Guwange thread but it never got updated. We could always start one.

Facebook, twitter (@Cave_world_en) and emailing their dev blog (blog360@mail.cave.co.jp) are all good places to start.

I'm going to send an email too. (I hope other will too)

not like I have high hopes but I hope it will at least tell them about our minimum expectations for future XLBA ports like Dangun Feveron and such.

They were made aware of it (and already acknowledged reports about it and other bugs) the same week the game came out. The lack of any sort of feedback regarding a patch makes me think that the game sold badly and isn't worth patching. Hope I'm wrong though.
