Plus, there is the classic sound if you die. Also (don't think this is enough to be classified a spoiler, but just in case. Normally, at the end of a level, there's an old-school SMB1 style flagpole that you jump onto before you go into the mini-castle and raise the Mushroom flag. You get SM64-esque end of level music when you do this. However, depending on the time remaining (I think it's if you have a time like 111 or 333 or etc..) you can get NES-style fireworks and music! :D

(Edited to correct it.)

Do you get "rewards" for hitting the flagpole at certain times on the clock? You know, when the timer is at 1, 3, or 6?
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

Yes, but the requirements are different from the original SMB.

Had it since Monday night. I am on World 5 so far and love it. Even though there is no Racoon/Tanooki power ups, gameplay is as close as a modern sequel can get to SMB 3 and the level structure is nicely refined.

Collecting star coins opens up challenging yet leisurely replay value. Blue turtle shell and micro Mario are ace IMHO and both encourage extra exploration within the levels. Only down side to the blue shell as others have said is you will spin off a ledge sometimes. Anyways, great game so far and it's nice to see Nintendo and Tezuka release a sequel which has also brought back great memories for me of my old NES days. Plus later we can look forward to Super Paper Mario. Good time to be a 2D Mario fan. 8)

edit: Oh yeah, and the 1Up review was lame. Although I often disagree on some things he says, I normally enjoy Parish's writing. But he was in complete snob mode on this one. I said this elsewhere and I will say it again: when a gaming geek/reviewer (Parish) refers to himself as the teacher, and a Tezuka/Miyamoto product as the student, well folks...that isn't quite what I'd call proper "geek protocol/ettiquette" to put it mildly. He writes the review in the tone of a classroom setting and at the end of the review he says: Parish- "Nice try NSMB, but no gold star. Please see me after class." Hmmm.

Got the last of the star coins today. I've opened every path, collected every coin, and finished the game several times.

No super secret extra bonuses. Still a fucking great game though.

I love how (warning for spoilers again...)

doing the 'clock trick', which in this game involves the last two digits of the clock being the same (but not 00), on the appropriate levels, gets you a different level of bonus toad house depending on where the two numbers are on the scale of 1 to 9: normal for low, a 1up house for medium, and a Mega Mushroom house for high :D
