I picked up the new Depeche Mode album today. Big fan of theirs for many years. I didn't even know they were going to do another album, but I'm happy they did. It's as strong as Violator, better than Ultra by a long, long way.

Anyway - here it is:

Depeche Mode - Playing The Angel
Picked this up myself, not listened enough to judge properly as of yet but I'm liking what I'm hearing.

Found an LP I haven't heard for years, Prick s/t. From about ten years ago, Trent Reznor had a hand in the production and publishing of it, I think the band itself consisted of one guy only. Great LP, NIN on happy drugs with catchy choruses and stuff but beyond that I've never seen or heard of the band again.[/quote]

Lately I can't stop listening to Chromelodeon's "Dark Sword of Chaos"; a Ninja Gaiden II cover album. It's fantastic.

Apart from that, I'm still spinning far too much Bal-Sagoth. :)

Sonic Youth, Daydream Nation
(I first heard this one back in 1989 and I just wasn't ready for it-- I hated it. Now I realize I was a young fool. This album is unquestionably great.)

Polvo, Today's Active Lifestyles
(I have Rob to thank for this one.)

True that. It's my favorite SY record, and I like every SY album (save maybe the "Made in America" soundtrack record).

This week:

V/A - Grindcrusher (Earache compilation)
Sugar B - I & I Produkt
Loop - A Gilded Eternity
Boogie Down Productions - Criminal Minded
Faith No More - Angel Dust
V/A - Return of the Living Dead OST

One album I WANT to get is Dragonforce's Sonic Firestorm. They're a pretty awesome band, but all I've heard is Fury of the Storm, and I want to hear more of their songs.

BTW, Sonic Firestorm cover and tracklist can be found at this link.
The radio said, "No, John. You are the demons."
And then, John was a zombie.

Well - collected my Amazon order from the sorting office today.

Contained (all by The Cure):

Three Imaginary Boys (deluxe remastered edition)
Faith (as above)
Pornography (as above)
Join The Dots (4 cds of unreleased tracks and a few remixes)

Four or so albums are now out in deluxe editions - each has an extra CD of remixes, studio performances and unreleased tracks. There's no crossover with the collection above - makes you realise just how much music they made. The remasters are definitely clearer than the original releases - I've compared side by side, and you can tell even on a stereo TV, let alone a real hifi.

Also listening to these remasters makes me remember why I've consistently voted them as my favourite band for years.

Bloodflowers: Which is your favorite Cure album, or (if the answer is different) which would you most recommend? I've enjoyed them from a distance, but never bought an album. Thanks.

My choices:

Favorite album as a Cure fan: Seventeen Seconds
Album that made me a Cure fan: Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me
Album that seems to be the most widely loved: Disintigration

Personally, I'd recommend starting with KMKMKM, since it's probably their most varied release.

Seth put forward a good suggestion for where to start, Kiss Me (x3) is a great album, some of their best tracks are on it. Disintegration is as mentioned, the one people always refer to. Other good places to start would be Wish (called overrated for ages, now people say it's been underrated - I always loved it), and The Head On The Door. If you want an overview of old to pre-new-stuff, Staring At The Sea - The Singles is excellent.

Picking my favourite is incredibly hard. Three Imaginary Boys still sounds brilliant with its bleak version of the beginning of the 80s. Seventeen Seconds is a good followup to this with a slightly matured sound, Faith and Pornography are harsh journeys into the way Robert Smith and the band were feeling at the times they were written. Kiss Me (x3) is a mixing pot full of ideas and sounds, even less well regarded albums like Japanese Whispers and The Top have essential tracks on them. If I was forced to pick an overall favourite, The Head On The Door.

Even their B-sides and rarities set has more A class tracks on it than most bands release in their lifetime.

Thanks much, sethsez and bloodflowers. Since there are so many options, I'll probably get the one I find cheapest (probably used). Hopefully I'll get a chance to shop this weekend.

As far as the Cure goes, I'd heard odd songs and liked them for years, but the first LP I ever picked up was their last one (self-titled?). I'd recommend it to anyone, some great tunes on there, especially The End Of The World. Was a little concerned to see Ross Robinson listed as producer (Korn etc...) but he's done a good job here.

I bought Bright Eyes' 'I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning' a few weeks ago and wrote it of as a coutry and western wannabe piece of shit. I have now realised I'm a fool and it's gentle, chilled out magnificence.

And everyone should check out The Dismemberment Plan. Any of their four LP's are cool, personally I'd suggest 'Emergency & I' or 'Change'. Spazzed-out rock & roll that sounds kooky, unpredictable and is just great fun to listen to, and the lyrics are superb too which always helps in my book.

Best cure album has to be 'Pornography'. It's just pure genius. It's a very depressing and unorthodox album (it sounds like no music that preceded it), but I still listen to it now and then these days. I have some live shows from the Pornography tour in 1982 (including the first time they ever played "a strange day" live), and those are just amazing. The songs were so tight back then.

I went with Staring at the Sea- The Singles. It really surprised me. I was somehow expecting mostly a standard 80s pop sound with lots of keyboards and very little guitar. In fact there is some really nice guitar-- it sometimes reminds me of Joy Division and that early 80s post-punk sort of sound that I love. And, of course, as you get to the later singles from the mid 80s you do have absolutely classic 80s pop. All good-- though I didn't think so as a teenager in the 80s. But back then I was a young punk. Thanks again for the knowledge!

Right now I'm listening to the Ketsui OST that's included with the Insanity DVD which just arrived. :) "No Remorse" kicks ass, especially the orchestral part that begins around 00:48 into the track.

Here are some other favorites of mine at the moment:

Yack- Border Down OST Vols. 1 & 2, Metal Black OST, Elevator Action II OST
Matt Bianco- Matt's Mood
Manabu Namiki- Zed Blade OST
Trapt- Someone in Control (esp. "Stand Up")

I've also been tuned in to Musical Starstreams' online channel (starstreams.com) which plays exotic electronica stuff. I used to listen to their radio program a few years back until the station in my town that carried it went under.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Like these even more now. I should probably buy them to be fair.

just got:
Espers - Weed Tree -- covers + 1 original, grower (more traditional than their album, for obvious reasons)
Carcass - Necroticism -- most listened to band of the year

Yowie - Cryptooology -- definition of wonky

It should, since The Cure was always a part of that. ;) The pop stuff didn't come until quite a while into their career, and even then it always had traces of post-punk (except for Friday I'm In Love, but really, that song never happened).
