But to continue with my train of thought for a moment, consider that the Danmaku Gata guy and EOJ were as hardcore into scoring as it gets. And where did it get them? They grew SICK of their favorite videogames and gave up on them - that's where it got them. Aren't we therefore justified in saying that the way they played these games was the wrong way?
Maybe that applies to you or me - certainly I have poor skills and a game must be exceptional (or a score attack game) to hold my interest very long (and I still lose progress due to shifting away from games now and then). But I dunno, why do I need to tell somebody else they aren't playing it right? If EOJ burnt himself out, that's his own damn fault and none of my business. I'll feel sorry for him without imagining that I would have the self-control to do better. Like getting dropped into the cockpit of an RX-78 or take control of sikraiken's brain, it might be too much shooting power to handle!

You are right, no point to advise anyone on anything, or even to attempt to communicate at all. How didn't I see that sooner?

Perhaps if the Danmaku Gata guy had been more focused on clearing games instead of on scoring well in them he'd still be into shooters and still keep running his site today. Even simply downgrading scoring from your main to your secondary goal should help keep you from burning out on games, by allowing you to engage a wider variety of them. Like a wise man recently said:
Cool. A brand new idea for a topic. "How to play shooting games". Yawn....

I won't argue with that (although I wouldn't know as I've not lived there for ages), but the forum has that dead horse beaten and then some, in thread form, at least 20 times here. Considering myself and a few others have been a part of this community for about 1 year for each tick in your current post count, and are clearly smarter than you, I should have reworded my slur. For that, I apologize from the bottom of my heart.

This and the following posts are making me laugh uncontrollably! Good show everyone (but mostly GaijinPunch).

Look, I see you mean well, but let's just think about this for a bit - you know that this "let's tell everybody what to do" attitude is just paving the road to hell. I unfortunately have a lot of experience in this area, so you can trust me on it  I'm not against a discussion but the burnout discussion has been had before - and pleasantly done. The one thing I think we can all insist on is that everybody be treated as an individual - some people just don't seem as prone to burnout as others. If EOJ ran the same game for so long, then yes, burnout is obviously coming down the tracks - but that is not really a typical example. I would rather honor the fact that he kept slugging away at it, and helping others in the community, even if he ultimately sacrificed a portion of his happiness for it. His choice, again.

Also, the continued popularity of Counter-Strike 1.6 causes me to question your assertion that burnout is inevitable when playing a game repeatedly...I basically burned out on CS: Global Operations after rushing through most of the Achievements offline, and that was only a week or two of playing, and with considerably more diversity of content (as streamlined as that game may be) compared to your average STG.

I find it comforting the way Icycalm keeps on resurfacing in different guises. He's like some comedy villain that keeps on coming back against all odds. He's Mad Dog.

Actually, I've been quite surprised at how restrained people have been about it. I was expecting more people to put the boot-in, as it were.

I'll miss Cave-STG. I thought it was a great resource and the only interactions i've had with EOJ have been pleasant.

Although I didn't post much I was a member since near the beginning. I liked Cave STG. Was a pretty focused forum for the most part.

Ah yea, forgot about that.

Still having a hard time displaying the threads, though. Sometimes it'll let me read the first page, but I can't read any past that.

If someone has harvested this data it would be beneficial to all if they would share it with the community :D

So i used this tool https://github.com/webrecorder/webrecor ... n/releases to open it and from what i've seen it's not forum archive, but only blog posts.

Where are archives by these guys, then?
moozooh wrote:Don't worry; it's taken a while but I've downloaded the entire site. However, due to the way its engine generates webpages, there are about 56000 files taking up over 2.8 GB with separate files for things such as RSS items and mailto links and whatnot. I have to sift through all of that and delete everything unneeded (at least 80% of it by my estimates) as well as my private messages. I expect the final size for the archive to be less than 100 MB compressed.
Tyjet wrote: Just out of curiosity, what program are you using? I'm using Offline Explorer and the whole forum is about 400MB and 7600 files. I ran the archive 5 times before I could get what is needed (topic, posts, and pictures, and PMs). I have a final size at 260 MB compressed in a HTML File and it includes both cave-stg/forum and the cave-stg.com links

It used to function as both a blog and forum, and I know this isn't the kind of archive you were looking for since it isn't fully functioning, but did you try this?

https://web.archive.org/web/20120814161 ... /index.php

It definitely doesn't feel like it's been nearly 5 years since the shutdown. A lot of the EOJ strategy guides made their way to the strategy section

webarchiveorg is awfully bad at saving forums - he keeps snap of main pages of forum and subforum, and that's the most of it. when you click threads... they arent saved

It's worth going back to read about how it was clear any cave 360 port inaccuracies were on purpose so they'd continue to sell PCBs.
