Gigwang Generations. Taito Type X is now emulated and that game would make for a great score attack. It's very easy to get into & super addictive, puts a lot of bullets on screen but isn't too hard to 1cc. It's probably Takumi's Cave-iest game and thus a great entry point for the newer posters here.

It can be a bit fugly but under all that it's a really great game.

Chances of enough people having pcs capable are slim , itl never happen. I could never get type x to even work for some reason .

Yeah, not sure how easy it is to get Type X running, my experience of the game is all from the jp ps2 version. I'd suggest Homura as well, but that's another Type X. There's the ps2 port but that didn't make it to the US iirc.

GWG sucks. Why not just play Giga Wing instead? I suppose it's already been in STGT?

Psikyo week please.

Blade Buster was really fun so more caravans would be welcome.

Is there a list somewhere of the games that have already been played?

One of the best surprises for me in these tournaments was in STGT 06 when we played Blazing Star. I had never heard of the game before and it blew me away. Ended up picking it up for MVS when I got my NAC last year. Such a nice surprise.

This wouldn't even be a bad idea, just to get people to play the thing. The problem is that there's probably a lot of checkpoint and/or infinite milking.

Pretty much perfect list, nice variety of games. Personally I would swap VV for Grindstormer, but I'm guessing I'm in the minority for this one :p

You can infinite milk the game at the miniboss of the first area's (Reptyl's) first section.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Offering up Ketsui Reverse Label for consideration.

Also Joyful Road, STGT requires 100% more Joyful Road.

Gunbird 2 hasn't been picked, just saying.

And personally I think that since Dangun Feveron was chosen 3 times (Jesus, really?) we ought to have at least some ability to choose previous games again. Say games from 5 years or more ago?

And as far as I'm concerned, that should rule that game out of any future STG... ever.

And how about some horizontal shmup love? We've played way too few of them.

I'm only counting twice, and once was the Score Attack Mode (it's fun, everybody should try it out - and did you play in 2010?)

Awesome choices, make it happen!

Personally, I'd prefer Prehistoric Isle to its successor, and Gunbird 2 to Strikers 1999, but I guess your proposals are played less than those, so it's all good. Playing Gradius for score can be a chore, so picking Gradius 3 is a perfect choice. I hate that game anyway, so STGT can't 'ruin' it for me.

There's still a ton of interesting games which have never been played in a previous STGT, so there's no need to repeat something.

serious suggestions

- Mystic Square (Touhou 5)
reasons: it should run finely on the Anex86 emulator, and it would be the closest possible experience to a Windows Touhou game (barring demos). The scoring is straightforward as well (get Dream Gauge to max, collect as many point items as you can without dying or bombing, time the mid-boss and boss takedowns to cancel more bullets, graze if you can, use Mima always because she's the best character of the series, genre, universe, etc). Which mode to choose? All modes would be allowed as a suggestion (because hopefully a good run in Normal Mode could beat a not-so-good run in Lunatic, but people aiming for the top scores would have no other choice anyway) except Extra Stage. One more thing: the game over screen results says how much slowdown % the run had, it shouldn't be above 5% (fullscreen mode seems to help remove slowdown, though the emulator doesn't have a snapshot capture function; alt+enter and then alt+print screen would be used then, for the top <insert_some_number_here> scores)

- Phantasmagoria Trues (danmakufu script)
reasons: also another legal (at least more than MS or mame roms) way to have a Touhou-ish game into the tournament, though there are significant differences such as
- no hitbox collision on enemies (a la Mars Matrix or Aero Chimera
Spoiler
's demo
)
- "emphasis on grazing for cancelling bullets" mechanic
- (Takumi-esque) multiplier & r.Ed gauge mechanic
- optional stages
- (Unlimited mode only, not sure about Terminus extra stage) Varth-esque temporary invincibility upon picking up bonus point items (which come from killing enemies while you have r.Ed gauge max, iirc).
Both the script (the game) and the script interpreter are free.
Mode suggestions (for consideration), all of them would use the default 4 shot types (ReimuA, ReimuB, MarisaA, MarisaB) which come with Danmakufu (the script interpreter), the interpreter allows anyone to save replays (which include the average fps information, which shouldn't be below 55 or 57fps iirc):
- Standard (less bullet cancels, but less bullets too)
- Advanced (as an alternative to Standard)
- Unlimited (if you want to try the temporary invincibility thing I've said above)
problems: I don't know how to exactly replace the default blank sprite ;_; Also, more people may have issues with trying to get Danmakufu to work than the Anex86 emulator (for Mystic Square)

- Phantasm Romance (danmakufu script)
reasons: an alternative to Phantasmagoria Trues, it's made by the same author (Len) but made before PT; still has the cancelling mechanic (but no Hyper thing, and one cancel every 250 graze except during spellcards) but no multiplier or r.Ed gauge. It's a more straightforward game, which I'm mostly indicating because everyone should play some of its stages. (especially Ex3 and Ex4)

- X-Multiply
reasons: most people will play "for fun" (as in, not trying to milk the 1-7 or 2-7 boss), and while the game can be frustrating for those who try to milk said boss, this detail shouldn't make it a worse option than P-47 Aces (in which not only the highest scorers are encouraged to do the boss milking trick on stage 7, but less scoring players had to bump scenery and enemies whenever it was safe enough.

- ESP Ra De
reasons: boss milking makes the game way more difficult (mess up once, feel the difference at the end game bonus) for a not so rewarding score

- Twinkle Star Sprites
reasons: with enough consistency (and a Lvl 8 difficulty) the game is more about how well you can raise the rank and milk Memory (while not wasting lives on the way and trying to make good scores on the other stages if possible). There are the restarting on the first stages, but it's mostly due to the player (or just me) messing up than it is to the AI dying too fast (except for stage 1's).

- ESP Galuda
reasons: it removes Ketsui and DOJ from this year's stgt :D

these are my suggestions for now.

Yes, please! I need some extra motivation to play the R-Types. X-Multiply ain't bad either (although I'm sure some people will get it down pat, even the crazy endboss, while others will just flail around).

plz no. Danmakufu crashes on statrtup for me under jp locale, so those games would be unplayable for me and anyone else with that problem. Mystic Square or LLS would be cool, but I'd rather see it narrowed down to one mode if we do. Normal would probably make the most sense.

What's this?

Pick a game, everyone plays it and submits a score?
To go "full-Plank" - colloquial - To experience disproportionate levels of frustration as a result of resistance to completing a task. Those who go "full-Plank" very rarely recover.
