Also, fucking lol at people hanging out on a shmup forum judging what's "socially acceptable" or not

You don't know the difference between a scale figure and a doll?Elixir wrote:maxlords wrote:And the difference between a figure and a doll is what exactly?"Figures" are a marketing ploy to make dolls a wider market base. And it worked like a charm.
There isn't one realistically. It's still a doll intended to represent a character of some sort. The only real difference is the character denoted in the doll and the intent of use versus display (and since many dolls and figures intended to be played with are displayed instead, even that doesn't apply). Even scale cars are dolls with wheels.
@ njiska: It's true that figure/doll collecting is scoffed at by the mainstream. But that's my whole point. MLP fanboyish is not mainstream socially acceptable.
@KennyMan: And the social unacceptability of shmups is what? Because we play shmups we're automatically unfit to judge any social standards? That seems more odd than Bronies, to be honest. <disregards Kenny>

I stopped caring about being "socially acceptable". Can't everyone do whatever they want as long as it doesn't involve others unless those want to be involved?

Face it, video gaming at the level of serious we do it is not "mainstream socially acceptable". Not that I give even a tiny bit of a shit about what I do is "socially acceptable" or not, I do what I enjoy doing, I play what I enjoy playing, and I watch what I enjoy watching.
If something I enjoy is something that isn't supposed to be marketed at 25-year-old guys, why should I care?

So you actually enjoy watching a cartoon show about ponies? And you're 25 years oldKennyMan666 wrote:Face it, video gaming at the level of serious we do it is not "mainstream socially acceptable". Re: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
You know, I'm reminded of the apparent message of another cartoon, an old British cartoon called The Raggy Dolls, about a bunch of misfit dolls that has been thrown in the reject bin in a toy factory.
That message being "If you're a misfit, you'll fit right in with the other misfits". Whether or not that's a good message is for you to decide, but it's fine with me, because if I don't get accepted, I'd rather hang out with the other people who also didn't get accepted rather than force myself to stop enjoying something I enjoy just to become accepted.
Vyxx: Indeed. Hell, I'll openly admit that I currently own figures of four of the main characters, and more will join them. I still don't get why it's so hard to understand. I think it's a good show, I like the animation style, I think it has interesting characters, the writing is good, and it comes with a large dose of very self-aware humor. The characters just so happen to be non-anthro ponies (which of course is an important thing, but...). Why should that mean I have to not enjoy it?

Because Society wants you to hate it. Humans still think they can set themselves above other humans and decide what they shall and shan't do.KennyMan666 wrote:Why should that mean I have to not enjoy it?

"Raggy dolls, Raggy dolls, dolls like you and me!"
You know, now you mention it, all those brony guys singing along in that video kinda resemble the Raggy Dolls a bit...

hahahaha "nigga you gay". that shit is funny.
I don't think I've ever seen a topic get 4 pages of responses in 2 days. Nice job Skykid I think you struck a nerve...
I think watching the show is pretty out there, But this Bronies shit is just plain weird. Bronies would not exist in the real world outside of the internet because they would never have the balls to actually flaunt that shit in public.

I didn't mean to. Technically it's not my debate, I just pulled the topic out of another thread cos folks kept coming back to it.burgerkingdiamond wrote: I don't think I've ever seen a topic get 4 pages of responses in 2 days. Nice job Skykid I think you struck a nerve...
To those guys who do enjoy MLP, it's all good, you enjoy what you want. I'd rather folks in the world were happy enjoying eccentric or deviant shit with likeminded people than unhappy because they feel socially trapped.
This generation's geek fads have gone into warpspeed anyway: it's all one big mish mash of weeaboo, crossplaying, twilight, touhou, yaoi, animu congregations that I can't even begin to pretend to understand.
That said, if you go to a videogame con, you do get your fair share of poor hygiene and social awkwardness. It's just dudes don't dress as girls, hold hands and sing songs from cartoons.

In the UK we have the ATEI (for arcade) and in the past the ECTS which has now been superseded by the Eurogamer expo. Last year I attended Replay in Blackpool and I try to attend all the Neo Empire stuff to keep up on the fighting game social scene.
At Replay folks were either playing games or drinking at the bar (in fact the AO crowd had the luxury of being situated by the bar so they were all ratassed by about 12pm.

No crossdressing there.
ATEI is guys in suits drinking beer pretending to look important and business-like, and the odd scruffy chav who wormed his way in to play free games.
Eurogamer expo is a lot of journo's and industry guys, but largely casual/hardcore gamers checking out what's new.
ECTS is way before the time of dudes cosplaying in the UK, so nothing there.
In Japan at the AOU I didn't actually see any guys dressed as girls, although there were plenty of booth girls dressed as characters. There was a pedo dude who couldn't stop taking photos of the little girl dressed as Windia.
So... no, I don't ever see guys holding hands dressed as girls singing songs at videogame cons.
The MCM Anime Expo however... was like a freakshow.

Lol 7000 posts and I get thread of the year for My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.Never_Scurred wrote:Skykid, I think you have the Thread of the Year on your hands, man.
