You guys watched BBC's Life? There's too much shit on that that is clearly not innate to say these animals aren't intelligent. They show this bird that drops a nut or something from like 100 meters up onto a rock to break it. Monkeys that bash hard-shelled food onto logs and whatnot. Clearly learned, but also cultural (grown teach their offspring).

I was trying to make a point earlier about animals being intelligent (yeah, I've been working on that BBC life set; though I like the earlier series better--IE Life on Earth FTW!), but Rando dropped me a 20 page article, and I'm a wuss so I've let the issue go.

some monkeys (chimps to be exact not sure of others) have much better short term memory than humans to the point where it is almost photographic.

They'll bring aliens into play soon to 'save' us from the New World Order, everyone will love them of course and cheer at them for freeing us of our oppressors, and thats when the real fun starts.

Interesting article about how any intelligent life we might find is likely not to be life at all.

i agree that is pretty likely.. if there are creatures moar highly intelligent than us it's likelly also that there computers and technology are also going to be a lot more advanced. You do not want to give a computer that does not value human life artificial intelligence.

anyone see a film called collussus?? just imagining what could happen in that fictionary world after the film ends is enough to blow my mind to little pieces

"IF" 4D LIZARDMEN EXIST I DEFFO WOULDN'T CLASS THEM AS INTELLIGENGT. INTELLIGENT BEINGS WOULDN'T RAPE THE PLANET AND HOLD BACK TECHNOLOGY.. THEY MAY HAVE AN EARTHLY STUDIOUS INTELLIGENCE BUT IF YOU USE IT FOR BADNESS AND EXPLOITATION CAN YOU BE CLASSED AS TRULY INTELLIGENT?? INTELLIGENCE DON'T JUST COME FROM BOOKS WHICH IS WHY ICY CALM IS AS THICK AS A PIG.
I DON'T BELIEVE IN THEM AND IF THEY DO EXIST I WILL CRUSH THEIR HEADZ WID THE POWAH OF MY MIND

Pretty exciting stuff, now that there is at least one dedicated telescope that "only" looks for planets.

I haven't actively browsed/used this forum in many years and it's no longer an accurate representation of me.

I have retired from genre-specific content creation after 13 years, but I'll always love this little genre in my own personal way.

Obviously no smoking gun, but the latest extrapolations from Kepler definitely give pause.

Sum Up: Projected 50 billion planets in the Milky Way, with 500 million being the habitable zone.

It's pretty obvious just from a statistical POV that there has to be life out there. But we will likely never see them because they would be held back by the same limits on space travel that we are.

One lingering thought in my mind is that our greatly inflated abstract/symbolic thinking--that which sets us apart from everything else--has only really occurred once as an evolutionary solution to survival. Is their something special about mammals that lends a platform to that? When humans are gone is there any real reason to think it will occur again? If you were an alien life form visiting other worlds, looking for 'intelligent life' (how vain), what's the temporal chance of actually finding any?

The fallacy of the 'intelligent life' and 'space men' idea is that if life is to evolve anywhere else, it will ultimately lead (like a ladder) to something like us; something capable of symbolic/abstract thought, but why that? If we want to look at earth as a small experiment, we're the rarest of the rare; the most bizarre exception to the rule. Which leads to a good question: Is consciousness a great evolutionary leap, or just a passing fad? Like photosynthesis or warm blood, is consciousness such a great idea that something descended from us way off in the distant future will witness the end of this solar system, or is it insignificant, primed to vanish from this earth like countless other evolutionary novelties in the next few million years. If the later is the case, it would make the search for other 'intelligent life' a rather gloomy prospect.

I do believe that perhaps we are looking in the wrong places.I believe a higher intelligence could mebbes be found amongst the smaller creatures of the universe. If computer chips etc can be shrunk down to miniscule size and still retain function surely a small creature could have an intelligent brain (albeit shrunk/scaled to size to match the creatures body weight)
It has already been proven that insects can have a group consciousness far above that of humans(altho humans appear to be evolving a bit in that respect)
