STGT'09 Week 3 - Thunder Dragon 2

Well, shot-based rank is out (too bad we're not playing Lethal Thunder, eh? SHOT COUNT SCORE BONUS)
But there are still a lot of things about this game that remain mysterious to me. For example, stage one entertains me to no end. Before the first shot powerup helicopter, and after the bonus letters, there are two waves of popcorn planes. Oftentimes when I sweep left to right on the first pattern I uncover a hidden bonus on the right side (sometimes high on the screen, usually lower). Sometimes it just won't trigger, and it seems to be time based, as going back to the right after the first wave doesn't uncover anything.
Then the much-misunderstood infamous carpet bomber planes - quick shooting them all doesn't trigger the bonus flamethrower stealth plane; that seems to be based on time. If you're really quick you can get two more black planes to show up at the top corners, and they shoot a very loose spread formation. They drop small medals as well (I think some medals count up through the stage, though I think these were 500pt medals - they didn't add much at all to the score), so once you've cleared everything before the boss you have to scramble to pick up a total of five possible bonus medals.

A very minor improvement. I watched the Youtube replay and learned a ton about getting 50K items to appear and actually managed to start pulling it off three times in level 1 rather than just twice at most.

It's not based on time, you have to kill all of the enemies up to certain "checkpoints" in a stage to trigger the bonuses.Ed Oscuro wrote: But there are still a lot of things about this game that remain mysterious to me. I am going absolutely bonkers just trying to keep the bomb pride going for sweet bonuses. Of course, panic bombing doesn't seem to work here half the time. As somebody else already noted. The blue bullets disappearing within my shot cone are also not welcome. Thankfully a lot of it can be memorized though. It's still not bad enough to make me go back to the P1 side, though...

haha this is epic, this will definitely trump Twiddle's RFJ flameout which I'm sure we will all be pleased for. CRY SUM MOAR
Blame the game, MAME, and the dog for not knowing when the score screen comes up? Seriously though, how did it come up BLANK?!Danbo Daxter wrote:i took ~8 screenshots and they all came up fuckin blank, what a terrible game. mango sentinal may boycott this one, folks
Up to a certain point yes, like with the popcorn planes at the beginning, that seems right. But it's actually not correct that you need shoot down the bomber planes as a precondition for the flamethrower stealth plane to show up.NTSC-J wrote:It's not based on time, you have to kill all of the enemies up to certain "checkpoints" in a stage to trigger the bonuses.Ed Oscuro wrote: But there are still a lot of things about this game that remain mysterious to me. i didn't like rfj either but hell i could see how people liked it and it eventually grew on me a little but this game is just...

the top score flashes, of course a bunch of games do that so i thought i'd hammer on the screenshot button and none of the screenshots had a visible top score. just bad luck probablyEd Oscuro wrote: Blame the game, MAME, and the dog for not knowing when the score screen comes up? The invisibullets start to get aggravating. Not being able to see them can be circumvented by dodging intuitively every time you think something is going to shoot at you. But what's more lame is that not every bullet is aimed at you — and those will be the ones that will hit you.

So are you boycotting or submitting scores? Those are mutually exclusive. ;PDanbo Daxter wrote:we'll submit scores but by god we won't like it...

basically i made that pic but by the time i finished it i realised people had already submitted scores... but like 5 members of the team really hate this game, so "boycott" is the party line

Re: STGT'09 Week 3 - Thunder Dragon 2
At least on the first stage, if you don't shoot the white planes at the end fast enough, they will suicide and you will know you won't get the delta. and if the delta suicides you won't get the extra planes after. it is hard to tell when the planes suicide when you are shooting all over the place. and there are those two big medals to the right of the delta, shoot the sky right and left. both are hard to grab because the screen starts scrolling faster when the boss comes. i am sure it is this way with every stage, you just have to figure out which enemies trigger the delta. i think in stage 2 it is the watchtowers? So yeah, shoot fast and don't miss any planes or any things.Ed Oscuro wrote:Then the much-misunderstood infamous carpet bomber planes - quick shooting them all doesn't trigger the bonus flamethrower stealth plane; that seems to be based on time. i think it merely has to do with the time that is left before the boss comes. imo the bosses appear after a set length of time. if you destroy shit fast enough in the stage, and there is time left for the delta-mecha to appear, it will appear. if you were to slow, it won't show up. if you take things extra slowly in the first stage you can see that there will show up far less enemy-waves 'till the boss comes, you won't see the last waves of fighters at all. also, one time i used all bombs to clear my way through stage 1 as fast as possible. in that run, after the delta mech another set of fighters leaving 500point items appeared. quite interesting concept, imo.At least on the first stage, if you don't shoot the white planes at the end fast enough, they will suicide and you will know you won't get the delta. and if the delta suicides you won't get the extra planes after. and there are those two big medals to the right of the delta. both are hard to grab because the screen starts scrolling faster when the boss comes. i am sure it is this way with every stage, you just have to figure out which enemies trigger the delta. i think in stage 2 it is the watchtowers?
