Hrmm...

So I liked this game enough to clear the others in the queue and go back to it. I've only got about 9 hours on the clock so far, but despite the impression it made on me initially there's something missing in the game for me. I don't really mind the fact that it's fairly formulaic as it has bags of character. From the outset (cos it starts brilliantly) I was expecting some more variation in terms of plot progression, but it kind of quickly cools off after the first 2 hours and then begins to stick to safe JRPG town by town bizness.

However, I can live with all of that, but one thing that irks me is that you create the characters in your party rather than discover them. My main character is voiceless anyway (which is fine) but to have the rest of the team voiceless too sort of feels... empty. Like, I designed them so they're pretty cool, and I realise online adventuring and meeting other players through portals is a significant part of the game, but during the one player I'm starting to feel like I have three drones tagging on my heels who are just fight support.

Bit of a shame really, as it's taken the wind out of things a little for me. I feel the game needs a few more personal characters with that Toriyama spark to accompany you.

Anyone else get where I'm coming from with this?

I rather agree. DQ9 just feels uninspired for some reason. There is a lot to the game, but not much that makes me want to play it. That and any attention I had for it was stolen by Etrian Odyssey 3 (sorry for continously plugging it.)
