Thunder Force I doesn't seem so hot. But wait, was that actually on the Mega Drive?astrodan88 wrote:ban plzJohn845 wrote:Steel Empire - Genesis
Seriously, there are PLENTY of mega drive shmups that have aged worse (or weren't never very youthful to begin with). Anyone play the GBA update?
I got another one. Raid on Bungeling Bay on the NES. Technically it's a shmup, right? What a slow-moving piece of shit. I never did finish it, I kept falling asleep. Also the NES version of Tiger Heli is even slower than the arcade version. There's really no reason to play it any more.
SWY: Games are just for fun
When discussing which games haven't stood the test of time it's important to take into account the changing trends and fads in game design. Lot's of older games are really fun if you manage to get into their rythm. Just like modern games they are meant to be played in a certain way, requiring the player to get into a certain mindset, and if he don't, he's missing out on the fun.

I meant regular old Thunder Force of course.astrodan88 wrote:If you mean regular old Thunder Force, yeah.doctorx0079 wrote:Thunder Force I doesn't seem so hot. But wait, was that actually on the Mega Drive?
If you mean the Mega Drive Thunder Force trilogy, no. They are immortal.

I share the same feelings…MathU wrote:I still enjoy Galaga immensely. Now Space Invaders, on the other hand... I never really was a fan of that. That said, Space Invaders Extreme is awesome.
I enjoy Galaga (especially Galaga '90) to this day, but have never cared for Space Invaders. My sister had this for her Atari when I was a child and I actually hated it…
Now Space Invaders Extreme on the Nintendo DS is indeed awesome… I still need to get my own copy along with paddle controller. I actually didn't even get it initially because it was infact name 'Space Invaders'…
I always had a fondness for the SNES shooters that first got me into the genre. Games like UN Squadron, the reworked Gradius III, Axelay, and the two R-Type entries had some great level designs, bosses, and certainly some of the best music in the genre thus-far (and in a lot of cases, since). When I play something like Axelay, the artistic side of the game still impresses me, despite any faults the gameplay may have. The music (themes like 'Colony' and 'Silence') certainly keeps me more interested than the forgettable soundtracks in games like Dodonpachi (though, of course everything else about that game is awesome). The fact that shmups started to go extinct in the U.S. right as companies like Konami and Irem were reaching that stage of refinement amounts to a huge bummer. It would have been nice to see an Axelay 2 or SNES releases of Salamander II or Xexex.
I'm a total newbie at the bullet-hell genre of shooters, and a large part of me doesn't see myself enjoying the style of those games on a long-term basis. More games like Ikaruga and Gradius V would be nice.

Galaga has not stood the test of time. However, I like Galaga '88/'90.Sonic R wrote:I share the same feelings…MathU wrote:I still enjoy Galaga immensely. Now Space Invaders, on the other hand... I never really was a fan of that. That said, Space Invaders Extreme is awesome.

I actually prefer Space Invaders to Galaga original. Maybe because SI is harder, I'm not sure.

No, I think most of Compile's titles are still relevant and play well. The original Aleste is a bit laborious to play these days (as is Zanac), but for the most part, Compile's stuff is still very fun.Zweihander wrote:...am I the ONLY person here who thinks Halley Wars and Robo Aleste have aged well...?Compile

What's this "Darius" game everyone keeps talking about? Something about giant fish... is it anything like that "Sagaia" game for Genesis?DC906270 wrote:I can't see many people getting much out of the first two Darius games[/quote}
OMG, sacrilege

I get a lot out of Darius 1 and 2 but maybe that's because I'm the kind of philistine who's SICK OF MF'N GALAGA. I do like 1942 and Xevious though.Zweihander wrote:DC906270 wrote:What's this "Darius" game everyone keeps talking about? I hear you on Galaga because every fucking arcade in a 30-mile radius has only ONE shmup... Galaga. Hell, I hate Xevious but I'd rather be playing that for some variety. There was this one place semi-nearby that used to have Raiden Fighters Jet...doctorx0079 wrote:Zweihander wrote:I get a lot out of Darius 1 and 2 but maybe that's because I'm the kind of philistine who's SICK OF MF'N GALAGA. Hehe, when I was in Trinidad, in the arcade in the Movietowne theatre [only one I've seen with any shmups], there were only 2 shmups, and Galaga was one of them [the other was Wyvern Wings [1p stick has been broken for at least 5 years, BTW], which I played way too much of, despite me sucking at it, and after 2 months of practice, I had only just begun to start getting to level 3].Zweihander wrote:I hear you on Galaga because every fucking arcade in a 30-mile radius has only ONE shmup... The moral of my story:
Galaga is fun, but it's like Hydro Thunder -- when you see it EVERYWHERE, you get sick of it.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.
Sagaia is the port of Darius II for the Genesis, as released in North America. It's called Darius II in Japan.Zweihander wrote:What's this "Darius" game everyone keeps talking about? And yes, that's sacrilege!

Sagaia for the Mega Drive is one of my favorite games of all time.

I thought I implied sarcasm in my post. Guess it wasn't blatant enough.Kollision wrote:Sagaia is the port of Darius II for the Genesis, as released in North America. Nah, it's cool. Sarcasm isn't as easily detected online anyway. A lot of people are assholes about it (even assholier than me), but honestly, without the tone of voice implying sarcasm, it could be anyone's guess.Kollision wrote:ops!

I also don't think 1942 has aged well.
Difficulty-wise, it's likely that not many have finished all 32 stages, but there are much more interesting shmups in terms of gameplay and graphics that I find it's hard to stay interested in playing 1942 past the first big plane boss.
Then there's the separate issue of drum and whistle music that gets very old after about stage 4.

I used to own that game on the NES and I definitely agree with you on all these points. How much time does a full run-through of this game actually take?toaplan_shmupfan wrote:I also don't think 1942 has aged well.

I remember yelling "bullshit" at my TV as a child when I defeated the big plane (a couple times during the game actually) and was rewarded with one of the crappiest boss explosions ever.
Sorry for the OT above.
