The best kind of wheelchairs are the 30 grand ones with special hydraulic systems, we get to play with them and race them on the street. The negative ass-spect of the job is the daily reminder that there are things worse than death. I can't go into detail due to patient confidentiality, but generally speaking after a nasty car wreck sometimes you're better off dead. Head trauma can (CAN) mean a lowered IQ (sub 70(retardation) if severe), loss of all motor skills, inability to communicate, disfigurement that is disturbing to look at, etc. It's rough on the parents, you're left with a pile of medical bills and your kid is, effectively, dead. It's really tragic. Someone who may have been on track to be a high school valedictorian will have to learn to tie their own shoes again.
Sorry if this didn't make any sense, I've been up all night

It's been my dream for ages to teach film studies, preferably at sixth form level (i've become disillusioned with the way university handles this subject).
I love teaching so much though that i'm pretty flexible. I used to tech a year 8 class English as a teaching assistant, which was amazing.
At the moment i'm relishing my last summer as a 'child' before going back to uni for 3rd year and cracking on with my dissertation.

I'm curious if there are any job changes from some of you over the years?
I currently work in the Bankruptcy department of an auto finance company.

E-tailer website product & purchasing manager.
I select and purchase stock of all the electronic shit we love and that's made by chinese slaves.
A job where you have a lot of responsibilities and you're still paid like the guy at the warehouse.
Why the f* did I go to university then ?
Dreaming of getting away from this crap right now, but there's friggin' NOTHING available around, crazy unemployment rate.

I am a carpenter. I am mostly framing now a days. I am one class away from my computer information sciences degree but I am pretty sure I'll just keep building houses. Once I get some shop space I'll probably start messing around with furniture making.

Bank teller, aka "you might as well be at Wal-Mart or McDonald's when it comes to wages, though you might be able to get off your parents' health plan." Of course, a takeover is imminent, so it might not matter within the next few months.
So that your employer knows you're too indebted, worn out, and useless in anything other than the very specific field you trained in to complain when they treat you like garbage. Why the f* did I go to university then ?

It's actually the opposite, the boss, chief and HR don't tell much even when I'm often late in the morning, because me and the other guys doing this job are over-qualified and the versatile+specialized mix type of workers you just don't find anywhere, a lot of the business's aspects depend on what we do every day and they know it.BulletMagnet wrote:So that your employer knows you're too indebted, worn out, and useless in anything other than the very specific field you trained in to complain when they treat you like garbage. Why the f* did I go to university then ?
They're pressuring us in a different manner: shit pay but stable contract, they just won't fire anybody because when they do they have to pay a compensation.
And they know we won't leave because there are no jobs out there.
People always say 'shut up you have a stable income!' but I don't remember life being so much shittier whan I was uneployed.
Thankfully I'm not indebted, which is quite commn in my country because we don't trust the economy and banks (and banks don't trust us in return). Rather we save or receive help through the family's savings (most parents have higher standards of living than their kids's generation)
Doesn't change the fact that if I quit my job I won't receive unemployemnt insurance and won't be able to pay the bills: game over.

Re: What are your jobs?
Framing is pretty good right now. There doesn't seem to be many young people entering the field anymore. Wages are alright, depending on where you live I suppose. You're probably never going to pull in 6 figures but you are not getting fast food wages either. With not many new faces there is plenty of work and employers know that you can easily get hired on somewhere else if you want. Some companies do not offer many benefits though. Payed holidays and vacation is all some will give you. You can also pull in some easy cash doing side work on the evenings/weekends if you have more general building skills. I have student loans because I decided I wanted to go to college but most people in this field won't have that burden. I enjoy my work but the big down side is the cold winters. Carhartt and Sorrel keep me pretty warm though. I recommend young people at least consider getting in a trade.

Hey that's an intersting point, I often work with my headphones on, mainly to escape the open space's ambiant noise, but music helps me concentrate a lot as well.emphatic wrote:I can listen to music all day and the hours just fly by somehow.
To me it's a boost for my productivity but some colleagues only see it as an anti-social thing. *sigh*

Re: What are your jobs?
Yeah, it does get rather tiring to be told to be grateful that you're being given the chance to tread water and waste your life on the razor's edge in the name of making a handful of very rich people even richer. Yes, I am very well aware that there are people out there putting up with situations worse than my own, but that doesn't change the fact that I, among many others, am getting royally ripped off and am moreover labeled an ingrate (or, worse, just a parasite looking for a handout) if I don't say "thank you" on top of that.Xyga wrote:People always say 'shut up you have a stable income!' but I don't remember life being so much shittier whan I was uneployed.
I don't know how it is in your field/region/etc. but a lot of listings I see around here, including for jobs like yours, refuse to consider anyone who doesn't already have at least a few years experience in that very particular field; pretty much no job that pays a living wage offers to train anyone anymore, in any capacity (supposedly even some fast food places are demanding both experience AND a college degree now). And of course even getting to the point where you can start building up some of that experience requires months or years of time and thousands or tens of thousands of dollars just to get your foot in the door, which few prospective workers these days have to spare. I'd absolutely have a whack at a "hands-on" kind of job, and so would many others, but the opportunity, especially off the street, is in many cases simply not there; that's not to single out your sector, of course, as it's one of many. There doesn't seem to be many young people entering the field anymore.
Re: What are your jobs?
Be warned, the wage is bare minimum in there. You may also find the company's politics rather draconian.railslave wrote:Im hoping to get a job in "Cex" (quite a big game store in the Uk), ...

Re: What are your jobs?
I work as a stock associate. It's not minimum wage, at least. And the people I work with are fine. Oh, and I don't have to deal with the customers too much [I work in Boca Raton, so snooty bastard types are distressingly common, I'd be fine with it otherwise].
I'm at university as well, so getting a better job would probably take time away from being able to do my coursework.
