jimmy page's illegitimate child...!
plays a lot of zep tracks note-for-note perfect, including stuff only available on live albums. blew my fuckin' socks off
I'm going to be in the market for a new electric guitar soon and I have no idea what to get. Right now I'm playing an acoustic Taylor (Big Baby) and I like it a lot.
I'm obviously gonna be going around and trying a bunch of guitars but if anyone can suggest some models I'd appreciate it, my price limit is $1,500.
The similarity of the first sample clip to early-era Zep stuff is amazing. I'd kind of like to use that sound in recording, like how Welcome has vocals that sound like the Beatles, or how Panda Bear sounds like the Beach Boys.
JJG - There's a lot of good stuff at that pricerange. I'd get a Mustang from the early 70's with a competition stripe and matching headstock. Any of the semihollow Rickenbackers are available, long as they're not vintage, and reissue Gretsches with Filtertrons. Elitist Epiphone Casinos typically go for $800-900 used w/case. I'm gay for the semihollows right now as you can tell. Most production Fenders and Gibsons could be had for that sum as well. The Mustang may not have the best sound, but the guitar, especially the ones with the strat-like body carvings, is the perfect sitting around/laying in bed/etc. at home practice guitar. Guitars don't get more comfortable and it's hard to top the competitions in terms of looks.

I've actually been playing guitar finally and I'm already better than I ever thought I'd be. That isn't saying much though. I figure if I have to up the ante in any way I'll get one of these bad boys: http://www.electricamp.com/home.html
And then have the Grza make me whatever effects I want.
I've just won a blue Vintage 5-string bass on eBay. Vintage basically make decent budget instruments for beginners, and this one apparently goes for £250. My auction ended at £80, which is lovely enough, but I also got a Warwick bag with it, which I'm told covers the price of admission by itself!
Needless to say, I'm as pleased as punch right now.
I got the Zvex Box of Rock but I haven't had the chance to test it in any real way yet. I'm getting an MI Audio Crunch Box as well. I'll probably sell the lesser of the two. I also really like the Big Muff Pi although mine is one of the cheaper types. It's probably worth keeping as more of a fuzz sound to go with the above two, which are Marshalls-in-a-box.
My boss also lent me a Line 6 Pod and it's really sick. You just have to change the output mode somehow so it doesn't sound like crap. I'm not really sure how I did it, it just sounded terrible at first and now sounds great, so keep messing with it if it's not working for you. It should be a great tool for direct-to-pc recording. The Van Halen model in particular (Plexi Variac) is fucking GREAT. Makes you play cheesy rock riffs all day. The AC/DC sim isn't bad either.
Now that I know you're not a dillweed anymore I'll say "HAY! Nice guitars Res0Glas!". 4 reals. Do you have any Gibson goodness you could photograph?

Oh it goes good. An old friend of mine Russ works there covering the boxes with tolex. I totally forgot he worked there because I was never in a position to care about high end guitar stuff so in one ear and out the other. But yeah, just what you'd expect. A half a dozen stoners in a room full of sweet amps and parts from which to build more sweet amps. When I first went there it was just me and Mike Soldano noodling out on the Astroverb prototype. It's everything I ever dreamt as far as tones go, but at least ten times louder. So I anted up and bought one. He can't sell direct but it's no biggie because his favorite dealer is Emerald City Guitars. Fuck, mine too! So I handed the money over to the EC guy and I believe I'll be picking up my silver on silver on silver Astroverb 16 combo some time this week. I'm going to try to take a pic of it with Don (the technician that built the guts) and Russ.
Here's a silly little vid of their old shop in Ballard:
A Soldano! You lucky bastard! I can't wait to try one myself. Your neighbors will call and ask you to turn it up.
I'm getting a b-bender for the Telecaster soon and hopefully a keyboard as well, if finances permit. I know I'll have fun with the keyboard but the b-bender is a bit of an experiment.

Thanks dpful, these cables are too cheap to bother, I'm gonna go with some of those lifetime guarantee ones...the name escapes me
They sell a kind where you just unscrew a screw, snip the cable in half with scissors, jam it back in and tighten the screw. Those are super easy to fix. The ones I used also had a little stand-by button right on the plug.
There's no such think as lifetime guarantee cables- just ones that are more expensive and will probably last longer than the cheapo's. Look into those jam-in-and-tighten-screw kind.
To save face on the dancing, I thought it better to leave the vid in context rather than post a direct link. There's baby's and lots of other stuff on there.
.....anyways, scroll down just a bit- I've been playing guitar in this group for a bit: http://www.myspace.com/purrbats and my pal joined, also on guitar, and kind of hogged my job. So, I constructed this baddass keytar to switch to.
I am feeling lazy so the following post is cut and pasted from another forum:
UPDATE:
I have managed to increase my guitar mojo exponentially by adding a sticker:
That is a bulgey eyed green monster with a tongue that is longer than his body flapping in the wind while doing a frontside air on a skateboard made of a giant pirate's sword. Which is bloody. How ill is that? Anyway it's a vintage Keith Meek Slasher sticker by Santa Cruz and is older than most of the users of this forum. I had to get my boy Larry over here and trade him a crunkass Steadham from the same era to get that thing. Between the two of us we have the most epic collection of 80s skate stickers known to man.
In other news my custom Astroverb arrived the other day. Here's a pic of it in its natural habitat:
What the fuck can I even say? It's everything I ever hoped for in a little combo and ten times louder. I get all the tone I want by just plugging the guitar straight in and cranking the preamp. No Muff necessary!
Looks awesome. Directed @ both, the Ibanez copies are better than the originals from the era in many cases.
I asked for one of those minimass attenuators for my birthday, a 50W version. Unfortunately I just learned that that won't be enough to handle my bassman, a 50W amp, because you're apparently supposed to have double the wattage on the attenuator or something. Damn.
About the keyboards, I wasn't looking for anything crazy, just a cheap starter setup for songwriting that will do a decent piano imitation, and maybe MIDI for recording purposes. Cheap, but not like those ones we had as kids that sounded like an electronic trumpet
Neon, I don't like that Mini Mass much. The Astro has preamp gain and I get all the distortion I need that way even at low volumes. The Grza twisted my arm into borrowing it but it just gathers dust.
Thats a nice looking sg PaCrappa
I`m really satisfied with my new guitar. It¨s an Electra x330, lawsuit lp copy from the 70`s. I will post a pic when i`m back with my sweetheart in Sweden
I just found out that the Gretsch Filtertron pickup has the same string spacing as a Strat, so I can retrofit one into my Hello Kitty strat and save 2 grand by not buying a Gretsch guitar. Tho I'll have to paint said pickup white, of course...or else incorporate it into an 'evil cyborg hello kitty' motif
These Vintage mahogany Les Pauls are pretty sweet, dunno if I mentioned them here before. Nice SG type cherry finish, same pickups as a standard, but you can get 'em used on ebay for like 5-6 hundred w/hardcase.
Neon wrote:Oh my science. I love the flower-pot tuners on the standards. How does it stack up against the Epi?
You're the first person to ask me that on the net or irl. It's funny, that is the lowballest Epiphone you can even get and I have always loved the tone when hooked up to either the Soldano or the Muff/LaFayette. So tonally I wasn't expecting/hoping for much. I had this idea in my head that a fancy Gibson would have intangible qualities that would make it easier to play than the cheapo Epi. And it turns out I was right. So now I have the Epi and Soldano upstairs for late night low volume playing and the Standard and Muff/LaFayette in the basement for cranking hecka. It's sweet because I still do alot of practicing on the Epi and because my record player is right there 90% of the riff/song learning gets done with the Epi. And then I go downstairs and everything seems so easy. And loud. So yeah, as far as sound goes the main thing I notice is greater sustain. It's in great condition. It's obviously missing the one cap on the volume knob and also features some buckle workings on the back but they're not bad. The guy before me looks to have had a favorite note or two but in all the low end Fu Manchu rhythm strings it's like brand new. So perfect for me and pretty cheap too at $900.
Tommy that Les Paul looks neato! The only guitars I'd ever have are SG's and Les Paul's. I don't care much for the Sg copies I've seen besides the Ibanez one that looks all nice and woody like P Hat's bass. But I think I like alot of the nice LP copies as much as the real thing. I almost bought a Tokai Love Rock that looks like yours but I found this SG instead.
Oh, and did somebody say JUNIOR?!?! Here's my friend Keith's 67.
Jeez Louise that acoustic is great! I don't even listen to acoustics (unless it's Carlos Montoya!) but that thing makes quite the visual impression.
I wasgoing to mention how I don't really like Les Pauls without the binding and all that but I played a Gibson one like Neon linked and really liked the way it felt, if not the look. It also had an ebony fretboard which I think is nice.
Anyhow, I just saw this for $175 on CL. I got the guy down to $150. It's a Legend Rock 'n Roll 50. 50 watts, tube preamp, SS power, 2x12. It could use a little work but the Grza's got my back on that.
