Yeah - I had little time to play with my beloved genny, but you haven't heard the last of me!

Thankfully there's the weekend or these contests would be pure madness...

I feel like an idiot now. The answer was right there in the original thread. Duhhh

Having said that, I now have to ask... don't you mean Tuesday at 5 AM GMT, since it normally ends on Monday at 5 AM GMT?

Nice TFIV trick for convenience (ignore if you knew about this already): if you press start when selecting stage order, it will use the same order you selected last time.

I agree... The ruin level with the magically appearing snaking things is pissing me off. I can make it through the first run with them okay, but later in the stage where they come back and do their crap again I can't seem to get a safe path through them.

I use the DGen emulator too and can vouch for being able to start with no lives in stock, but with them all ghosted out.

I can also vouch that I currently would have nothing to gain by being deceptive with this, as I've currently had next-to-no time to play this game and under these rules have a current top score of 5,200.

Yeah, I downloaded a different region rom and some versions do show ghosted out ships even if you never had them to begin with.

Also, do you get bonus points for how many extra ships you have when you finish a level? I ask because some people are playing with zero ships, while others are forced to have two.

They do when you finish the whole game. Therefore we might need a clarification on the stock number. I am expecting The Coop to finish it and I wouldn't be too surprised if another chap might pull that off as well.

Is there some sort of weak spot on Strite's bosses final form (the sea-horse thing) that I'm missing, or does it really just take twenty-five minutes to kill him?

His weak spot is the little orange globe-y thingy.

The Coop - 6,984,790 - All

Didn't do as well as I could have scoring-wise, but I've time to try and fix that :)

Psst... Are there shields available in other stages than Air Raid? Such insane scores... I hope you folks aren't milking the mid level boss in Strite or anything...

Did I happen to mention that if your avatar reflects the game selected for a particular week, you're unable to compete during that week?

No milking here.

As for the shields, about half the stages offer one (or two) shield power ups. But of the first four stages you have to choose from, only Air-Raid and Ruins have one.

I noticed the milking possibility too, but I didn't want to say anything for fear of an ED repeat. Personally, I hate milk...

Where is that shield in Ruins anyway? I've gotten it a few times, but it seems like I always miss it.

Congrats, Coop. :)

I didn't milk any bosses or subbosses, because there are no safespots. At least I didn't notice one yet. :P
Dodging the attacks the whole time would be to annoying for me. But when playing for score it's only natural to try and maximize your points, milking bosses and enemies is part of that strategy. It's not my fault ED had this flaw.

Hey I guess the only way to make SOME points is killing bosses and midbosses. Well I just got the afformentioned "Fucking Asshole" when I was playing at work (lol it seems I have a better set-up there). New score:

Rotateme - 79,000 - 1

WARNING: as I'm at work I found no other way to upload the image then using an imagehost that might contain inappropriate ads.

oookay, Maniac settings and just one life used:

241.940

Strite - Ruin - Daser (died just before snake midboss)

[edit: sorry, it was ruin, strite, daser really]

Feel I can do better... but not by much.

P.S. 20.000 bonus points if you select Ruins first!

One in Daser as well, but it only appears when you have one hit left on your current shield, and the powerup carrier moves extremely quickly.

Is this carrier otherwise a 1up?

I believe so.
There are at least two very fast carriers in that stage, one holds the Extend. Both I know of skim the bottom of the screen.

Shield counts from memory:

Strite - 0
Ruins - 1 (I think, very hazy on location)
Air-Raid - 1 (during lock turret section)
Daser - 1 (fast carrier during music change section, dependent on shield condition)
Battleship - 1 (before start of battleship section)
Underwater - 1 (upper section during midpoint of stage)
Lava Caves - 2 (both in upper section of screen)
Bio Base - 2 (one in closed section before boss)
Wall - 1 or 2
Final - 1 or more (sometimes randomly spawns during battle before last boss)

For those interested, you can finish the game with a total of 16 lives, maybe more. If you want to make your life a lot easier in Mania Mode, get Free Way as soon as you can. ^_-
