Sorry, you can only vote when you are a member of this tournament. But you'd be welcome to join the next tournament in 2007. :)

I've played both briefly, but what are the major differences?

Enemy chaining based on whether or not you hit with the melee attack (which isn't really chaining) and secret bonuses, basically. You get "bombs" much more frequently, usually from the gems you collect by meleeing.

Ypsilanti is due north of Toledo, actually. It's ambiguous anyway, since not everybody considers Ohio part of the midwest, or so I've heard (not sure what it would be, then...).

If we were going strictly by geography, you, Nemo, and Landshark would all be on the same team as me, which would basically render me useless and kill any movitation I had to compete.

Although given how much fun I didn't have playing Blazing Star and Star Force, maybe that wouldn't be so bad. I'm not sure I'll dig Air Gallet, either.

In any rate, BM, we're playing Air Gallet anyway. The vote seems to be heading in that direction.
Not "hit a nerve," really, but seeing people here talking out of both sides of their mouth (or both ends of their digestive system, however you care to see it) tends to irk me under most any circumstances...obviously if Air Gallet's chosen I'll play it, but it's near last on my list in order of preference.
Antiquated like many games from that era, amirite?
Not at all. 1996 isn't exactly "old school"...isn't that the year Garegga came out? Some of my favorite shmups are from that era, including Batsugun from several years earlier. And I'm sorry, but Air Gallet's no Batsugun.
mulletgeezer wrote:Air Gallet is less original but it's quite playable and has the right kind of attributes for a contest, being easy to pick up quickly, quite challenging and having a simple but worthwhile scoring system.
Different strokes and all that, but I'd consider Vasara pretty easy to pick up and understand, and certainly challenging enough...
Vasara's charge is really safe if you do it right, to me it's more like the Takumi bullet reflect shield than the Dragon Shot
You hearin' this, Rob? :P
but requires less skill than either.
I don't really see how, as you still have to know what spots to use it at for maximum benefit, same as the other two...

I don't like the little bullet-swiper stuff, like in Radiant Silvergun, Chaos Field, Radirgy, etc.

It'd probably be more similar to DB. GW is much trickier than it looks. DB also requires you to collect the coins you create, so that's another element beyond secondary move in key spot type gameplay. I'm not quite sure how Vasara works, I just know I don't like the basic gameplay.

Apologies for the Vasara smearing, but I honestly don't think people are influenced by what I say. Probably just as likely to go in the opposite direction. :)

That's quite a sophisticated rule book you figured out there, DJ Incompetent!

Couldn't resist to post, even more as I'm not in on a team and felt excluded and lonely so this made me feel a lil better

And a kind-hearted "Good Luck" to you too, Edge  just as long as your score is lower than mine...tee hee heeee!

Oh yeah, did anybody give ya the "OMG I'm protesting everything cuz of da selection" PM? Did we in-fact pull this off with minor hostilities?

Yup yup. Took me a few Labatt Blues to reason out that sunovabitch.

I'm just waiting for the Tiebreaker Clause to come into play...to which then I'll get 8-23 "ban plz"-es

Anyway, if you wanna play so bad this week, since our scores are eventually gonna be thrown in the official long-lasting hi score board, why don' t you head us off at the pass and work on a score to put there.
It seems nobody has put one there yet.

I for one am boycotting this week due to this being completely ignored:

1. Make sure they're challenging enough that most people won't finish it and it has some semblance of a scoring system. So there aren't 50 people with clears and basically the same score.

2. Make sure the games are actually enjoyable by most people, if people are going to be playing the same game over and over that shouldn't be a dreadful experience. (ex: no games with really long levels or games with only one or two parts in the game that account for a good score)

3. Not so much in developer weeks like Cave and Raizing, but in the other weeks I would make sure the game is available in MAME and has a home port to give the most people the opportunity to participate.
No offense, this isn't the Shooting Game Tournament 2006, this is Edge's Shmup Meet. So be it.

No offense, but why don't you make your own fucking contest then?

Oh, wait, I know why not. Probably because "complainer" types usually don't tend to also be "organizer" types.

Homura has melee attacks AND bullet reflections.
Feedback will set you free.

This is one of the biggest truths in the world. :)

Though in some rare cases, it's possible to convert a "complainer" into an "organizer"... (and he stops being a "complainer" :D)

Perhaps I'm cooking something up. It's kind of hard to start another tournament when there's already one going on, eh? And if I recall some of my ideas were taken and utilized in this tournament from the "Italy vs." topic, like spending a week on each game, having developer weeks, etc. And I don't see how the suggestions I've made would be anything but beneficial to everyone. I realize enjoyment in a shooter can be subjective, whatever, everything else though there's no arguing it. So if something is a good idea how about incorporating it as soon as possible instead of saying, "it's too late, we've already been doing things this way so it doesn't matter if that way makes more sense." And I think you'd be a little bit Cranky Kong too if your team was in second place and you weren't able to help them, and you were already excluded from the first week. And furthermore I love the whole hypocrisy of the tournament in the first place, the promotion of roms and MAME on this board is prohibited but let's have a Shmups MAME-centric tournament? Say wha?

IIRC, "one week's worth of playing time" and "developer themed weeks" were already part of the first STGT ran by Ramus. ( ̄~ ̄;)

Never saw it, so those were still ideas I thought of.
