No no this IS what I'm saying: Trek with a few exceptions (some great episodes) as a whole is average, and the Abrams movies fit in that average period.

I'm aware the franchise has hordes of fans, personally I liked it a lot to watch most of it, but not to the point of losing my objectivity in judging it.

Now okay; strip it from all the yawn-inducing shit and meh (keep the okay-to-excellent) and yeah it'll skyrocket in my personal ranking. To me that would mean removing maybe from half to the two-thirds of each series (and Enterprise completely lol, or just edit to remove Bakula, that could save it to some extent).

Skip the episodes 1-3. They're terrible movies by themselves, and they contradict many things from Episodes IV-VI. The original three are fun and not complicated. Just a standard adventure story in a sci fi setting.

I was talking with my boss and he said that he saw Star Wars episode 4 on the big screen (back in 1977) but passed up on episodes 5 & 6. He told me that he didn't care for them. So he still hasn't watched the other two to see what happens next. That's unbelieveable in this day of age. Still, he'd have to watch 'em just to see what leads up to the events of SW:TFA - Episode 7 a mere thirty years later.

I recall the big announcement of when Disney was in the process of buying the Lucasfilm empire for a whopping $4.2 billion back in October of 2012 + the big hint/jaw-dropping stunner that a new SW film sequel was slated for theatrical release down the road (which'd be another three years later).

ILM (Industrial Light & Magic, the practical EFX department of the Lucasfilm empire back in the mid-1970s and into the early 1980s) really outdid themselves with the special EFX shown in the Death Star II internal trench run sequence leading into the reactor room of Episode 6. I, personally, got to see the actual RoTJ minature reactor movie prop that ILM made (it was encased in a glass display & shown upside down -- in the movie, it's shown right side up though) at the San Francisco Moscone Center hosting a special Star Wars exhibit back in February of 1995 -- that was priceless. So much to see and drool over with in regards to the original SW trilogy -- I was blown away by the sheer grandness/extravagance of it all.

It sucks big time that the city of San Francisco was bitching about George Lucas wanting to build a SW museum there on choice prime real estate land (not to mention lost and untold potential tourism dollars from around the world is a no-brainer added benefit) but the windy city of Chicago ended up winning it instead (to the tune of a mere $1 per year for the lease of land that the SW museum is to be built on -- can't pass on that attractive offer right there, folks)...so that means having to make a trip 2,000 miles away just to go see 'em in person again. Mr. Lucas really wanted to build his SW museum in the Bay Area of California as originally planned but the head-honchos of S.F. didn't see it that way and they lost out big time in the end. So be it.

Saw The final Hunger Games movie.

I think it was one of the best ones of the series and definitely surpasses part 1. I was not at all expecting there to be a jumpscare, nor was I expecting the subtle amount of humor they peppered in. Though there were moments where it seemed to drag on, it was pretty good overall.

The trailers though. They seemed to go on just as long as the actual movie did! I'm not sure why they felt the need to show a trailer for Suicide Forest or whatever it's called in a theater with multiple children in it, and there was no Star Wars trailer at the end of them to make it all worth it, so that first half hour or however long it took was pointless.

Feels very strange that I won't be seeing the last part of this - or at least not paying to go see it - but I feel so aggrieved over that last piece of shit rip-off they churned out, that incredible concoction of pure filler, I absolutely can't bring myself to give them another coin.

Besides only the 2nd was really any good, the rest have been mostly shit.

Not the biggest fan of Episode 6 myself [and it's not just the whole Ewoks bit], but holy crap, it's ILM pulling out absolutely ALL the stops. Seeing the non-Special Edition version of the film is really impressive with the workmanship of the sheer amount of high-quality practical effects.

Haven't seen this in HD yet (only epIV) but really anticipating as it must be awesome to finally see the best ILM job in the best conditions.

I have all three LD french lang 'ripped' in 720x408, and although it's nice to have it's not something I can watch on a big display.
Too bad the fans are focused only on raw 1080p files weighing about 16GB or more, I'd be happy just with 720p single or dual language releases.
I understand their method though, 'officially' supporting per country/language file releases, and in more than one resolution, would be a huge pain.

Another vote here for Jedi's Death Star assault sequence being the best thing ILM has ever produced. Still utterly spectacular. I'm not sure I can think of any sequence produced with miniatures that tops that.

Continuing from my last post, I went back & watched the first of the new Star Treks & it surprisingly has nothing on the second. Weird because I remember liking it a lot more. Into Darkness is a huge improvement all around.

The actor who played the villain is SOOOO boing compared to Peter Weller & Benedict Cumberbatch. The 'creature effects' can be downright embarrassing - Kirk's big hands, the green girl, the big eyed girl. It's forever before Simon Pegg appears. Lots of things are either glossed over or downright ignored for script convenience. The fight sequences are wimpy in comparison. I feel like the whole thing suffers for being an origin story more than Into Darkness could have ever suffered for being a Wrath Of Khan remake.

Went into this not really knowing what to expect. Was thinking perhaps it would play out like a whimsical Neil Hamburger insult fest, however it turned out more like a soul crushing fever nightmare. It was no surprise to me to find out this was the same director as The Comedy. This makes for an either love it or hate it experience. In any case, Gregg Turkington was fantastic.

I don't care much for either of the new Star Trek movies. The characters are generally unlikable (with the possible exception of Simon Pegg as Scotty) and the plots read like bad fanfic.

Bedknobs and Broomsticks: ***

A 1971 Disney musical that tries hard to be another Mary Poppins (a lot of the same people worked on this one) but doesn't quite get there. Nonetheless, the visual effects are very good for 1971 (in fact, it won an Oscar for it that year, and was nominated for four other ones) and the rotoscoped animation sequence in the middle was done quite well. The main problem I had with this movie (or at least the DVD version we have) was that the DVD version we have included over 20 minutes of material that had been deleted from the theatrical release, bringing the film to a 140 minute running length, which is pushing it on my attention span.

The Visit

A very good thriller. Teenager brother and sister spend a week with their mother's family in their isolated country house; there's obviously something very wrong with the grandparents, but nothing that cannot be solved.

Photography is one of the strong points: The strict "found footage" style (the girl wants to turn their first meeting with the grandparents into a documentary about their mother) is handled plausibly (the brother has a second camera, tripods and video editing on a laptop are shown, the camera has the sort of handle that makes running with it easier than leaving it behind, etc.), erring, unusually, towards conventionally looking good (for example, batteries don't run out and cameras survive without a glitch falls that should destroy the lens).

Writing is even better: strange events are very low key, without departing from a general tone of normal daily life (as opposed to an adventure), but on the other hand anything, including a supernatural explanation, appears possible. When the actual problem with the grandparents is revealed (relatively early) it comes as a plot "untwist", clearing all wild guessing and marking a drastic change of attitude (from uneasiness to fear).

Good actors, with one of the most casually neurotic and psychotic ensembles of characters since Bolt.

I saw Pixels. Despite popular opinion here, I actually enjoyed watching it.

I realize the movie isn't very accurate in regards to how the games work, nor is the game footage watchable or superplay worthy. It still made me laugh, and I enjoyed the special effects and nostalgia. Nothing amazing here, but it was worth the time I spent watching it. Not interested in seeing it again though.

I believe the same guy who worked on some of The Empire Strikes Back special effects also played the awesome acid pedal steel guitar on The Gilded Palace of Sin. How cool's that for one's portfolio?

Point Break. The idiocy of it all, even by popcorn film standards, is something else. Shares some strengths and weaknesses with Heat. One scene looks like shot in the very same spot, even (when the dusk falls upon L.A. giving its heat back to heavens).
All sports depicted are mighty exotic to me, bar maybe parachuting (which I guess is about the same anyplace you do it, not that I ever have).

Dead Rising Watchtower

I turned this one on expecting it to suck and totally not relate to the video game at all but I was pleasantly surprised the movie was actually decent! its clear the director was a big fan of the series and certain elements from the game are in there such as designing kick ass weapons+mods and using them to kill zombies while encountering the odd psycho and those blood splatter effects on the camera lens were a nice touch

Enjoyable and it ends leaving a possibility of a sequel

I had no idea there was a Dead Rising movie. I'll have to watch that after I get around to playing DR3.

The last video game movie I saw was Takashi Miike's Ace Attorney. It's pretty good for a 2-hour long adaptation of a 20-hour visual novel, but it doesn't compare to the original.

On The Job
Advertising on the dvd case aside (trying to get those who would buy this to be reminded it is similar to a remake), This is actually pretty cool. A Filipino movie about a corrupt prison system. One of the higher up politicians has made a system where a select few get to have temp time off from being in jail. The only requirement is that they have to become hitmen and kill targets while out. The old guy and the young guy he's supposed to train screw up during one hit, and the rest of the movie goes from there. An odd mix of the Filipino language and English. Sometimes entire conversations in English. Good action movie and the music fit pretty well.

I rewatched The Fly (1986) tonight. lawd it good. Then Dead Ringers for 1st time. Fuckin Cronenberg, puttin me offa my food! Enjoyed DR, a more insidiously cerebral creep than his usual body horror spectaculars. Jeremy Irons' double play as P1 "PROFESSOR BOOTY" and P2 "im shy w/girlz rofl v_v " is convincing!
