Re: Movies you've just watched
The best train movie I've ever seen is called The northwest frontier. Stars Lauren Becall made in 1959.Xyga wrote:Guys, in your opinion: what are the best action/suspense movie(s) set on a train (the entire film or a big portion of it) ?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053126/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
As you can see the American name is Flame over India. Apart from Becall it has a rather British tone being that India was part of the British Empire and all that.
I have the USA Blu ray of the movie which is locked to region A.
2nd place goes to "The Train" with Burt Lancaster.
3rd place goes to Tough Guys. Starring Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas (filmed late 80's and its a comedy).
Other films worth mentnioning are the Runaway train, Silver streak or Unstoppable. I would watch them in that order.
edit - Tough guys only has a train near the end. But its worth the wait.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

A couple of my favorite train-themed movies are Money Train (buddy cop action/comedy) and Midnight Meat Train (gory action thriller).Xyga wrote:Guys, in your opinion: what are the best action/suspense movie(s) set on a train (the entire film or a big portion of it) ?
Over the top, silly, mindless entertainment. Also I'm a little biased b/c I worked in New York for close to a decade and so the setting of the American subway system is quite familiar to me, heh.
Re: Movies you've just watched
It really is, unfortunately. While I think that the first movie was actually pretty good (basically *in spite of* Segal, and that's saying something!), the second one is just pretty much unredemptive. It's also one of the most poorly put-together (editing-wise) pieces of garbage I've ever seen. If you do choose to watch it, I guaran-freaking-tee you that you'll be laughing extremely hard when you get to the final fight scene with the Super-Former-Military-Now-Turned-Ugly-Merc and the incredibly bad editing in that scene. You'll wonder how it even made it to production.Xyga wrote:Is Under Siege 2 as bad as they say ? I'm looking for good to decent 'train action-thriller' for entertainment, not necessarily something that got the approval of movie scholars.
It's hard for me to hate on a train movie, but this one surely deserves the hate.
On a more positive note, I thought that "Unstoppable" with Denzel and Pine was pretty good entertainment.
Re: Movies you've just watched
I'll tell you what isn't: Snowpiercer. Never made it to the end.Xyga wrote:Guys, in your opinion: what are the best action/suspense movie(s) set on a train
I remember enjoying Unstoppable, but calling it an "action" movie may be a bit of a stretch.
(Also, thumbs up for the mention of Waiting For Guffman on the previous page. Love that movie.)

Pretty much the same thing that happens with video games, music, litterature, whatever.

Just saw Spectre. Mad Max: Fury Road is still the best movie of 2015.
Re: Movies you've just watched
Saw the new Macbeth with Fassbender and Cotillard. Sticks fairly close to its source material, and doesn't really offer any new perspectives, but it's a formal tour de force with absolutely stunning photography. Highly enjoyable viewing. Still, I think I prefer Kurosawa's adaptation of the play.
Re: Movies you've just watched
Haha. I don't care about Spectre, but Craig's anti-Bond press tour is brilliant. Probably will get some people to watch the movie, and he's doing a good turn by himself in making sure the bridge is burned. He's also being classy about it, full of praise for everybody involved - but sticking to his guns on Bond's character. It's a strange old world.xxx1993 wrote:Just saw Spectre. I'm probably overthinking things, but I wonder if he's not also subtly trying to push the franchise away from actors like him, and towards Idris Elba (or any of the other actors who should get consideration).
Re: Movies you've just watched
Spectre
Thick irony and ambivalence ruin both James Bond as a character (along with Q, Moneypenny and Bond's designated love interest; M is stereotypical but more solid) and the traditional heroic plot of confronting Spectre and saving the world. The subplot of the new C embracing electronic surveillance and disbanding the 00 program, with the obvious outcome of leaving 007 alone and his friends helping him unofficially, doesn't help.
For example, Bond is elegantly dressed, as he's always been, but this time it's a joke: he changes in a few seconds, struts and stops to adjust his jacket in the middle of action, shows off many more suits that could fit in his bags, etc. Sean Connery would simply appear and look better than everyone else.
We are shown Bond's barely inhabited house, with boxes on the living room floor, and he's seriously criticized for his loneliness and his dedication to killing people, while the positive sides of his life as a spy are downplayed: he casually annihilates the SPECTRE secret base, he spares Blofeld's life but his final fate is unknown, nobody congratulates him, sex appears conditional on his retiring, and so on.
Action scenes are as good as ever; maybe next time they will have a hero rather than a burned out neurotic in them.

The Nightmare (2015) quasi-documentary on sleep paralysis etc etc. Sucks fuckin ass tbqh, don't bother. Lifetime movie of the week calibre. (REVIEW BASED ON FIRST TEN MINUTES + BIT OF SKIPPING AROUND WITH LOTS OF THE SAME LAMEASS SHIT BEFORE ALT+F4ING THE FUCKER)

*hwaaa* I wasn't quite as tired as I thought so I watched some more spooky films!
Coherence (2013) Reality compromised at quantum level during tetchy dinner party. Nervy, twitchy and generally engaging paranormal mystery in dire need of an ending. Creepy fun while it lasts, ultimately fluff. At its absolute peak, for about five minutes, it's a sound channeling of mass paranoia ala The Thing (1982).
Triangle (2009) Rewatched this excellent paradoxical horror after the enjoyable Coherence and Resolution (2012) both ultimately underwhelmed. Crucially there is a compelling human core to this film, with the paranormal embellishing a strong story rather than standing in for one. Physically and emotionally brutal with a bitter air, a haunting soundtrack, and the right balance of internal consistency to the unknowable*.

Spectre: ***1/2
I can't quite figure out what to think of this one, to be honest. On one hand, as a straight-up action movie it does a pretty good job. As a Bond movie, it seems to go back and forth between some really good parts and some not-so-great parts. As a spy movie though,it makes you realize just how ridiculously formulaic the entire spy genre has become lately. The Bond movies, the Bourne movies, the Mission:Impossible movies.... Heck, even some superhero movies. Everything is basically the same anymore. Bad guy infiltrates spy organization and is functionally omniscient , hero is kicked out/taken off duty and is forced to go rogue (sort of) to chase down the badguy while engaging in three or four gratuitous action setpieces with the thug-of-the-week, hero gets caught by villain who exposes the entire evil scheme before inevitably failing to dispatch the hero with an overly complicated deathtrap, hero blows the whole conspiracy wide open and takes the badguy down, thus earning an apology from the ones who doubted him (but secretly knew he was onto something.) I mean, the point of a spy is to try to infiltrate the villain's plans undetected, if the villain knows exactly where and who you are at all times and places anyway, you might as well just send in a few ninjas and call it good.
I mean, I like a good spy movie as much as anyone, but this whole entire genre seems ripe for a takedown the way Airplane! did with the 1970s disaster film genre. It so thoroughly deconstructed the genre and its overused tropes that it took an entire generation before anyone could take a disaster movie seriously again. I doubt anyone could actually make such a movie today (mostly because Hollywood is populated by idiots who think Adam Sandler movies are the pinnacle of cinematic humor) but I'd love to see such a takedown.

Ernest Blofeld seems to have done a really lousy job of designing his secret evil base out in the desert. I mean, a little bit of errant small arms fire is enough to blow the entire place up. You might want to check for these kinds of things before you fill the place up with heavily armed guards...
Oh, and in keeping with the stuff I talked about above, it occurs to me that SPECTRE (the organization, not the film) is basically Hydra, and when it boils down, the plot of the film is basically Captain America:The Winter Soldier with spies instead of superheroes..

My favourite spy stories have the "double life" aspect, where the spy have friends who are clueless. Like Alias.

The Maze Runner 2: Maze Runnering
Better than the first.
No mazes, lots of running, exactly the same predictable cliche dialogue as the original but less irritating clunky acting (on account of most of the original cast having been killed off). Still got the English kid picking up on the horrible performance angle unfortunately, stands out like a sore thumb, doesn't understand naturalism and seems like he's in a school play.
Otherwise genuinely pacey, some intrigue in there, good developments and some dynamic sequences. Quite enjoyed the zombie shit, pretty fucked up, and there were some nicely done moments of tension. Nothing to set the world on fire, but could have been worse. Was way better than Hunger Games 3: Part 1: The Money Theft.
Everest
Yeah, enjoyed. A true story is always interesting and I quite enjoy mountain climbing movies because they're just so nuts. The story itself is actually not *that* remarkable - Everest just happens to be fucking dangerous and that's that. So it lacks a bit of an emotional punch overall. Certainly not worth watching twice, but despite a few Hollywoodisms it rises above the superhero fare into half-decent territory. Recommended if the subject matter interests you.

I watched Devil's Advocate yesterday... that movie is one of my guilty pleasures. It always sneaks up on me though. It'll come on cable (or in last night's case it started up automatically on netflix after another movie finished), then I'll just start watching it not realizing it. Then the next thing I know I've sat through the whole thing. Last night I realized I actually enjoy the movie... like I said a guilty pleasure for sure.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Whilst I liked it I found it strange that they still haven't explained the maze thing. They explained the kids, but they don't explain why they would build these mazes to put them in. The handy cam moments were frustrating especially the darker scenes. Its also frustrating that after all the running they ended up at square 1 at the end. Unless the maze idea went straight over my head, I am sure it will turn into a "Lost" thing where the unexplained remains unexplained.Skykid wrote:The Maze Runner 2: Maze Runnering

Not quite up to the level of the best Pixar movies (I'd probably go with Up and Monsters Inc. as my two favorites) but definitely one of the better ones. It did handle its subject matter pretty well though, even though most of the characters besides the two main ones of Joy and Sadness felt like a bit of an afterthought. Overall, a pretty good movie though, and I thought that (oddly enough) the closing credits might have been the best part of the movie.
