Crimson Peak
As non-supernatural and non-horror as a ghost story can be. Edith, a rich and sensitive girl from New York, in early 20th century, sees ghosts (of unusually monstrous appearance): her dead mother warns her about "Crimson Peak", then she discovers it is her new husband's home. With the help of other 100% friendly apparitions she manages to come out alive.
I see a deliberate perverted intent to drop the ball whenever anything could be weird or scary. Why is the red clay of Crimson Peak so caricaturally blood-like? To allow using red as a visual motif; it's just clay. What lies sealed in the unusually reinforced large box in the basement? A phonograph and compromising documents. Why are the large vats of liquid red clay covered with locked steel grates? Nothing needs to be kept in or out, it's only to show them clearly only after Edith breaks one of them open.
It wouldn't be too bad in a different context, but here this approach has two contradictions: the double standard of having the copious amounts of gratuitous violence (all between living people) and disgusting stuff (mostly the ghosts) that would be appropriate in a proper horror film, and insisting on the metaphysical theory of ghosts as persisting memories with commendable coherence but very little paranormal activity to show for it.
There are also some clumsy attempts at refined complications, for example framing the whole story (in the credits) as Edith's novel, titled "Crimson Peak", and also having her write and pitch to a publisher (before the fateful marriage) a novel with "metaphorical" ghosts which she edits to add a love plot, which clearly mirrors to some extent the film's plot but remains untitled and uncited.
Sets look good but make very little sense; actors are decent, particularly Jessica Chastain.

Cooties.
Huh, did they rip off the virus origin from Poultrygeist? Just another zombie apocalypse story, but with fourth graders trying to eat the teachers.
I liked the kid named Patriot, so mouthy and a true American!

Charles Band kusomovie that despite showing sparks of technical competency and making no bones about being low budget trash, still ended up as comprehensive trash with no merit whatsoever.
The racism subtext was so hamfisted it wasn't really a subtext at all, and thanks to the useless acting and scripting ended up just being overtly racist, especially since the plot involves around a black man being shot by corrupt white cops who is then resurrected into a literal spear-chucking voodoo doll that looks like an african tribesman with a bone through his nose.
A ton of racial slurs and some stupid eye stabbings later and the only lesson that was learned is not to watch knowingly bad films for their comedy factor - they're often not stupid enough to be funny and too stupid to be tolerated.

Saw Ant Man yesterday. It felt very fresh compared to other recent Marvel films, and I quite enjoyed it. I never expected a four dimensional particle to show up in film like this, that was quite the unexpected development. (though I don't really think it counts as a spoiler because the particles are just there for a brief moment and don't directly impact the story)

Speaking of comprehensive trash...
Pixels: *
Apparently there was basically nothing good in the Redbox machine on Friday night, so we ended up with this. I expected this to be utter trash going in, and wasn't disappointed. It started off stupid, went straight to facepalm territory, and by the time it was done it had reached full-on WTF status on at least three separate occasions. Then again, I'm pretty sure anything starring either Adam Sandler or Kevin James is pretty much trash by default. Put both of them into the same movie, and you risk creating a black hole...

The killers (1964)
Surreal version of the Ernest Hemingway short story put onto film. 2 guys are out to find out where 1 million dollars has gone off to. They are hired killers as well, and they decide they want to quit after finding where the money has gone. A racer gets in a crazy crash after being toyed with by a pretty lady and then gets recruited for a robbery. Great movie. Now to watch the 1946 movie version of the story.

I was actually pleasantly surprised and now I wanna see more. his style reminds me of a lighter version of todd solondz if best in show is anything to judge his style by.

awesome! I was actually hoping for other suggestions when I posted that. a couple of the people I've been talking to were blown away that I still haven't seen "this is spinal tap" too which is also on the list. guffman will be first though.emphatic wrote:Waiting For Guffman is even better IMHO.Some-Mist wrote:girlfriend had me watch best in show (2000) over the weekend since christopher guest is one of her favorites and I've never seen anything by him. Such a funny part. Fred Willard always gets me laughing hard, but this was probably my favorite role of his. The bloodhound guy was probably my favorite overall tho.lilmanjs wrote:Best in Show is so odd but so darn funny. yea i liked the first when came out but 22 jumps was PURE SHIT for meSkykid wrote:21 Jump Street
The most surprisingly entertaining and actually funny cop buddy comedy I've seen since Rush Hour 2 most probably. Good chemistry between the leads, lots of self-referential humour and plenty of amusing situational nonsense makes this a fun one. Totally unexpected, but recommended brain trash if that's what you're after.
22 Jump Street
Disappointing.
one of the worst ever

Flight of the Navigator.... so sue me it was in HD.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?
Re: Movies you've just watched
That would be true if 22 wasn't basically a remake of the original. It's like watching a 2 hour spoiler.boagman wrote: See, now you guys are just making me glad that I saw the second one first.

I saw Ex Machina the other day. I found this movie actually great: excellent writing, no cheesy plot twist, interesting questioning about men and machines, very limited cast. Not the best movie ever but a refreshing experience.

Movies you've just watched
Blade Runner (any cut without the narration!)
Recently I've been watching it the way I did Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Back to the Future as a kid - i.e. on a regular basis.
Simply incredible filmmaking.

Guys, in your opinion: what are the best action/suspense movie(s) set on a train (the entire film or a big portion of it) ?

Runaway Train is quite good. Great double act from Jon Voight and Eric Roberts as escaped cons, plus a classic hardcase lawman nemesis in John P. Ryan.

I finally watched Hard Candy after avoiding it for ten years thinking it would be either too disturbing or some thinly veiled misandrist power fantasy in the disguise of a rape/revenge story. It wasn't either & I actually kinda liked it. It's all dialogue & emoting between two characters & almost nothing else, so it's painfully low budget but it's still pretty engaging. I never lost interest. When you hit the info button it should read 'A pedo gets his shit cut off by a 14 year old vigilante.'

Is Under Siege 2 as bad as they say ? I'm looking for good to decent 'train action-thriller' for entertainment, not necessarily something that got the approval of movie scholars.
It's kind of difficult to find proper information/advice/lists about that tiny sub-niche, especially considering it's often long scenes, not the focus of the film.
There are several in Bond movies (Octopussy comes to mind rather than From Russia) Indy Jones, many Western, the first Mission Impossible, the one where Sherlock Holmes meets S. Freud, etc.
I think there was one starring Pierce Brosnan or something, bad movie but good, long, train sequence...can't find the title anymore.

It's a Steven Segal movie, so you're going to be watching a movie whose protagonist is the epitome of "Mary Sue."Xyga wrote:Is Under Siege 2 as bad as they say ? Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.
An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.
Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"
