The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
It's dumb question time:
Do the new GameCube controllers work on an actual GameCube?

Yes.Immryr wrote:Do the new GameCube controllers work on an actual GameCube?
However, the GC controller adapter will not work on anything other than Smash 4. Would have been nice to use it with supported Wii games in backwards compatible mode.

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
Thanks. I don't actually have a wii u, I was just thinking it might be nice to have a new GameCube controller.

Yet the Gamecube is the only Nintendo home console that doesn't have any game available in the eShop.Pretas wrote:Yes.Immryr wrote:Do the new GameCube controllers work on an actual GameCube?

Are there any E-shop non-VC games worth buying? I have both Mighty Switch Force games and that's it..... what else is good out there?

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
Shovel knight gets a physical release this year. There will be a wii u version.
Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
NES Remix 1 and 2 (technically non-VC, but has challenges based on games available on VC. It's also available retail), Zen Pinball 2, Edge, and Pushmo are good stuff. Freedom Planet looks like it's coming in August. I have been playing the PC version (and beat it with Lilac), but the demo seems to be a good port. I also liked the Mutant Mudds Super Challenge demo, though it looks to be more of the same, but with harder levels and bosses (it will be cross buy for 3DS and WiiU, as well). Shovel Knight is good stuff, but is going to have a retail version soon (extra content will still be free, though).broken harbour wrote:Are there any E-shop non-VC games worth buying? Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
Nano Assault NEO is a great graphical showpiece for the system and a pretty fun euroshmup (something I very rarely say) for the brief time it lasts, especially in co-op. It has a PS4 version now, though.

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
Doh. I forgot about Nano Assault Neo. I like what I played of that one quite a bit.
While it's frustrating how the Wii shop is still separate from the WiiU eShop (and still needs separate credit), it does have some games worth getting like the Konami Rebirth games, Mega Man 9 and 10 (though they are also available on 360 and PS3), and Maboshi's Arcade.

You, Me and the Cubes on WiiWare was Kenji Eno of WARP's final game before his untimely death. It gets repetitive fast, but there's really nothing else like it, even among other "balancing" puzzle games. Amazing audio and UI design, too.
Muscle March is good for a laugh and has some catchy, stereotypically "J-pop" vocal tunes.

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
If you don't already own it on another platform, Guacameelee! is on Wii U, and it's excellent. You can play on the gamepad as well, so that's an added bonus. I'll 2nd Shovel Knight, though as mentioned, it is getting a physical release later this year. I can't recommend that game enough, it's fantastic. And I, too, am looking forward to the port of Freedom Planet.

What's the verdict on the Shantae game on the E-Shop? Its kind of expensive but on sale ATM.
Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
Shantae and the Pirate's Curse? I only played the 3DS one, but I like it quite a bit. It's my favorite in the series and I like all three. It's a well done Zelda II/Monster World style game with some fun items, levels, and bosses and the dialog is hilarious. Half Genie Hero and WiiU and 3DS versions of Risky's Revenge are also coming, but no dates for either yet.

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
I'm about 3/4 done Wind Waker HD, and no word of a lie... this game is worth the price of the system. I don't even normally like Zelda games all that much, but this one is pretty great, with the exception of one BS boss fight so far.
The game is also gorgeous, amazing what higher resolution and better lighting can do to spruce up a game a decade old.

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
I remember once playing this on a GC with plain ole composite video when my wife walked by during a sunrise. She just froze and gasped, "its so beautiful". They seemed to have used lots of dithering tricks that looked poor on close inspection but great as a scene.broken harbour wrote: The game is also gorgeous, amazing what higher resolution and better lighting can do to spruce up a game a decade old.
Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
I still want a new F-Zero very very badly, but 200cc with the F-Zero tracks DLC in Mario Kart 8 is really scratching the itch. The Big Blue course is absolutely beautiful and dethrones Mount Wario as the best downhill track. I've been rocking the Blue Falcon with my Mega Man amiibo helmet and suit for my Mii. Almost feeling like a Nintendo fanboy again here, it's a strange feeling.

I see Xenodrifter is coming to Wii U this week. Anyone played it on 3DS? I could use some real metroid gameplay.
Edit:
Sorry, that's Xeodrifter

I would like to hear impressions on this too. I heard it's good, but short. The game is also going to be cross buy, one purchase for both versions.antron wrote:I see Xenodrifter is coming to Wii U this week. Anyone played it on 3DS? I could use some real metroid gameplay.

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
I played a bit of it on PC, and it didn't agree with me - maybe I just needed more time to get used to it, but a lot of the hits I took felt frustrating.
Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
Just swapped in the Wii U GamePad High Capacity Battery ...
... what were the product designers at Nintendo thinking when they designed a battery compartment that accommodates two different battery sizes???

Looking at this wee battery inside the giant void, you can't help but feel ripped off.
Would have made more sense to simply use the same large size battery casing for all batteries - at least then customers can maintain the illusion that a more sophisticated battery with a higher energy density justifies the post-purchase expense - rather than Nintendo deliberately delivering an underpowered option inside its product in the hopes to set up yet another "profit opportunity" of selling the option that should have been in there in the first place.

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
I'm assuming because the bigger battery is heavier and more expensive .. and they assumed most people that bought the Wii U would be casuals that wouldn't be down for multi-hour long play sessions.
They're already losing money on each unit sold, mostly due to the tablet .. can't blame them for cutting a few corners. At least the screen isn't that bad ..

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
Mario Maker, a game many of us have dreamed of for over 30 years, releases on Friday...
I have never once killed the battery in my controller, though I almost never get more than 2 or 3 hours at a time to play games anymore.Udderdude wrote:I'm assuming because the bigger battery is heavier and more expensive .. and they assumed most people that bought the Wii U would be casuals that wouldn't be down for multi-hour long play sessions.
Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
That isn't my problem. Whenever I finally get around to using the Wii U the battery in the game pad is invariably drained dead. The game pad simply uses too much power in its standby mode - and it isn't exactly convenient to remove the battery when the game pad is not in use.broken harbour wrote:I have never once killed the battery in my controller, though I almost never get more than 2 or 3 hours at a time to play games anymore.
Nintendo isn't known for playing that type of retail game ...Udderdude wrote:They're already losing money on each unit sold.
For casuals there would also be multi-week intervals in between sessions and they typically wouldn't be expected to accept the phantom load of having the pad charging 24/7.Udderdude wrote:they assumed most people that bought the Wii U would be casuals that wouldn't be down for multi-hour long play sessions.

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
I got the Wii U since launch and it's a great system. My son absolutely loves it as he plays New Super Mario Bros U, Super Mario 3D World and Mario Kart 8 religiously. All of our family members are into Wii Fit U as well.
Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
I got one of these to replace my Wii. Setting up homebrew to load Gamecube and Wii titles from HDD was surprisingly easy. Gamecube and Wii games look better to me than the Wii.
Not impressed with the hardware. Fan always running at 100% with no variable speed (sure it isn't a loud fan, but still) and loud as hell disc drive. Gamepad has lousy range and a shitty display, I avoid it whenever I have the choice.
The loud disc drive is especially annoying as 360/Xbone/PS4 all already have solved this problem by allowing you to install games to HDD.
Only got two native Wii U titles (and there's like... two more I want before my Wii U collection is complete): Super Mario 3D World and New Super Mario Bros U.
Super Mario 3D World is fun.
I don't really want to bother much with New Super Mario Bros U. I feel it has a way too restrictive saving system for a so causual game and the music is still so terrible.

Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
That's what bothers me with the WiiU Game Pad. Unlike most other Nintendo batteries, the stock WiiU Game Pad battery doesn't hold a charge well.HydrogLox wrote:The game pad simply uses too much power in its standby mode - and it isn't exactly convenient to remove the battery when the game pad is not in use.
Re: The Wii U ( WiiU ) Thread
It doesn't make sense that both the pad and system have to be on in standby. I keep the pad in the cradle anyway and don't want to lose the standby functions of the system itself.
Edit: I want ahead and turned it off since I read it saves energy. I still think there should have been a mode where the pad doesn't have to be on in standby.
Come to think of it, I had the same charge issue before standby mode was introduced. I doubt turning off standby would completely resolve the issue (though I have it turned off now for other reasons).
