What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Started playing Dead Space.
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Debating whether or not to go back to Skyward Sword. I enjoy some of the puzzles and levels, but the controls can be a bit annoying at times and the bird flying sections are more frustrating than they should be (darn bird always has to get tired right before I get to my destination). I decided to go ahead and start Fire Emblem Fates. I'll probably play Majoras Mask or the OoT remake before I go back, if I do so.
I also started playing Mutant Mudds Super Challenge, which lives up to its name so far. Plays similar to the first, but with more levels closer to the insanity of the hidden retro themed levels of the first game (and hidden retro themed levels are still here as well). I got it because I liked the demo and the first game and it's living up to its promise so far. I especially like how it has a death counter this time around.
I also got Forgot-Me-Not for the iPad, which is now free. I like it quite a bit so far. Plays like a combination of Pac-Man and a roguelike. I like how it has iCade support. Works great with the 8bitdo pad.

As I posted before, Wii edition seemed to react slower than the PS2 port I'd played before it. Not the cursor, mind - that felt responsive enough - but 3D model took its time following my aim and some QTEs also wouldn't react to my first tapping onto required button.Ed Oscuro wrote:- There's a lot of lag built-in to this game. Ashley doesn't register a command while on a ladder, aiming takes time, most moves take time, and again aiming takes time.
Haven't played it with a 'Cube pad much (saw no reason to, having already had my fill of RE4 played with a traditional controller), so I can't tell if my "more lag than in the first port" impression would remain the same with it.

I like it when you get a bounty on your head because a horse saw you steal something; like another horse.Illyrian wrote:Oblivion was a great game, apart from the annoying psychic guards. Thankfully there was a mod for that of course.

ni no kuni
ni no coffee is exactly what it's turned into. over the weekend, cleared hamelin, tombstone trail, skull montain, the vault of tears, yule, and glittering grotto. I think I'm getting much closer to the end. We're already clocking in at 42 hours and now we have an absurd amount of tasks and bounties. story is incredible, and finishing up hamelin was actually pretty tear jerking. I'm ready to beat it but I think we're gonna be clearing a lot of the sidequest stuff...
hopefully will get some more time in tomorrow, but more-than-likely won't be able to pick it back up until next weekend.

yea, he sounds scottish (I think?) with english in game audio. typically I prefer the original audio with subtitles, but I think the english va's are good.

d'oh! I knew I'd be wrong. he's by far the best character in the game, but swaine really did get me the most choked up in the game so far.
I also see myself getting a ps4 in the near future partly for ni no kuni 2. the trailer makes it look pretty epic and I'm really hoping drippy makes a reappearance.

Not many Welsh English-speaking videogame characters (other than David Llewellyn Jones of Project I.G.I.), is there?
MGS2 on PS2 evening of nostalgia has been had, saved at and called it a day. Looking forward to seeing Emma again! She's got to be my favourite videogame female.
Schala of Chrono Trigger's also stuck in my memory, so it could be some missing sister thing (mystery to me as my sister is alive and well).

had to go back to the burbs for hockey yesterday. beat samorost 1 on the train ride down, and then beat samorost 2 on the train ride back in today.
then last night after the game, I played ni no kuni again, completed a bunch of tasks in the glittering grotto, and then got past the ghost ship "black porpoise" which was hilarious. looks like I'll be going back to hamelin this weekend.
btw, fuck the turban legends in the glittering grotto. the worst (for awhile) was getting two turban legends and a sasquash, and getting both turbans casting snowstorm subsequently followed by a sasquash earsplitter. would almost wipe my party every time.

Super Meat Boy on PS4. Beat it on 360 before I switched to Playstation, but I got it for free on PS Plus and decided to 100% complete it this time.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
So I just bought Factorio, which I stumbled upon a few days ago on steam (the game has apparently been gaining some popularity recently).
So you start off crafting a pick axe, you mine some coal and iron ore, and build a furnace to smelt the ore in.
Then you do the same thing with copper.
Then you realize it's boring to sit there holding the right mouse button for minutes on end to mine. So then you build a coal powered mining drill to do it for you.
But you still have to put the coal into the drills and furnaces by yourself. So then you build little robot crane arms and conveyor belts to transport the coal and put it into the machines for you.
But you still have to put coal into the transporter arms. So then you build a boiler and steam engine to generate electricity, and then you build more efficient electric powered arms to stock the boilers with coal, which can now be generated by a more efficient electric mining drill.
Then you start researching new technology, but it takes 5 seconds a pop to craft each of the many science packs needed to research, and you can't craft anything else while waiting. So you build a machine that takes in the materials and crafts the science packs for you, and faster.
Then you notice the pools of crude oil some distance away from you that could be potentially refined into useful resources and fuel... If you had the technology to refine oil.
So basically it's a game about building industrial factory complexes. I've just started, but it already seems quite engrossing. Also it seems to have elements of a RTS, as the extraterrestrial wildlife gets angrier and more powerful as you generate more and more pollution, which leads to the need to produce things like walls, turrets, ammo, tanks, and chemical weapons.

MLB 16 the show. I picked up last year's version for the first time dirt cheap (like $18) and got hooked on it. I can barely stand to watch a baseball game in real life but something about this game really draws me in. Too bad that it has some stuttering issues online.

Ōkami (in its "HD" iteration) remains oddly pleasant to replay; that is, the very interaction can be quite relaxing in a way not always expected of games.
What may work in its favour for me is, perhaps, that fact I cleared it on PS2 years ago, thus I can play without worrying of not finishing yet another game.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Well, it looking nice (esp. since the HD version added more color), having great music, controlling smoothly, etc all definitely helps.
My sister booted up the 360 to start playing Skyrim today. She made it up to the first Dragon fight (I think the quest is called "Dragon Rising"), but started encountering crashes. It seemed like every time she got within a certain distance of the two NPCs with quest markers on them, it would freeze. We tried whatever generic suggestions I could find on the internet - disabling auto-save, clearing the system cache, deleting and re-downloading the game (it's the digital version) - but it still kept crashing near those NPCs. So, she tried approaching the destination from the side, avoiding the NPCs path altogether, and managed to trigger and fight the dragon for a bit. However, it eventually froze again in the middle of the fight. We're not sure if one of those NPCs got near her, or if the crash is instead related to a particular patch of ground that the NPCs go towards. Either way, this shit's pretty annoying. Hopefully nothing like that happens to me when I start my Oblivion run.

while I've been at work, I've had david o'reilly's "mountain" running in the background. when it first released I had a month's worth of simulation and I just fell off... I redownloaded it and I've had two days worth of simulation before something I've never seen before
I was freaking out when it happened.
I've had ni no kuni on my mind all week and can't wait to get back to the burbs this weekend to get closer to the end.

never beat this one unfortunately, and haven't checked out the HD port, but it's great to hear that they did a good job with it. me and the girlfriend have been dualplaying games and it's definitely one that I added to the list a couple weeks ago. I played Skullgirls and Melee with a friend of mine the other day. There's nothing quite like hours of fighting games with someone you're evenly matched with. It feels like I've improved my neutral game vs Falco in smash.
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
started my first ever SL1 run on dark souls today while i wait for my copy of dark souls 3 to arrive. there have been no real issues for me so far, three hours in and i'm at anor londo, i imagine it's going to get quite a bit harder from here on out though.
-edit- i played a little more and, yep, it got tougher! i stupidly upgraded my reinforced club to lightning without thinking about how little damage it would do to ornstein. ugh. think i might just run back to firelink and upgrade a new one to fire, but i will have to grind for some chunks, which is never fun.
-edit number 2- i'm a double idiot. i've never made a fire weapon before, so i assumed it was just like a lightning weapon but you had to go to vamos. went there with a +10 weapon, some chunks and no ember.....

so far i'm finding that getting through areas and fighting bosses isn't really any harder on a soul level 1 run, you just need to plan a lot more.
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Are you using pyromancy much? I'd have assumed that's the way to go on an SL1 run.
I'm still playing DeS these days. Attempting a deathless NG on Squire's recommendation. It's certainly a different way to play for me; heavy reliance on magic, taking as few risks as possible.
Still plugging away at The Elder Scrolls in the evenings. Looked up how to get a special artefact quest in Arena, because screw waiting to be offered one randomly. You have to ask a stranger for general rumours at least 20 times, then they'll probably start you on the trail. It involved two long-ass dungeons that seem procedurally generated: the first was to get a map for the second..
I would try to get more of these powerful unique items to make the later game easier but I can't be bothered to go through all that again.
Playing a little bit of Skyrim also, went through a mountain pass and discovered 'Labyrinthian.' It's actually a main quest location from TES 1 so I had a little nerdgasm when I realised they'd remade it.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Tried out the new Ratchet and Clank game last night (release day woo!).
It's more of the same as previous entries really, its a loose reboot of the original game to tie in with the film coming out this month. They haven't really changed much in terms of core gameplay, which is fine by me, R&C is my gaming comfort food and I don't want them to take huge risks with it. It sure is damn pretty tho, it's almost like playing a Pixar cartoon, and they seem to have really stepped up the music, which was usually one of the weaker aspects of the previous games.

started really diving deep into samorost 3 last night and it's so-fucking-good! probably my favorite adventure game (so far) in the last couple years... moreso than broken age, armikrog, and the dream machine. it blows away samorost 1 & 2 too. by the creators of botaniucla and machinarium. the presentation is leaps and bounds better than the original 2 games, the addition of the clarinet is absolutely perfect, and the music and hyper-realistic environments have led to audible "oooooooh's" during the playthrough. it's supposed to be a 6 hour game and I spent a few hours last night... hopefully I'll get some more game time in tonight.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
so, I didn't really get to play much dark souls yesterday, only around half an hour and no progress was made. today has been much more successful though. I cheesed ceaseless then went and grabbed the large fire ember before deciding I couldn't be bothered to farm for / find a bunch of red titanite chunks. so I just went back to O&S with my maxed out lightning reinforced club. the damage wasn't actually all that bad when two handing, around 130 or so per hit and Ornstein staggered after two hits. it took me around 9 or 10 attempts today before I took them down - definitely the hardest fight of the run so far.*
I then took out the butterfly and sif with no troubles and headed to the dukes archives to take out my first lord soul. I decided I was going to try to do the duke skip, which i spent about an hour of my last play through trying, and failing, to get. i did eventually manage it this time, right as i was on the verge of giving up again - needless to say i was pretty hyped. seath went down first attempt, but he is weak to lightning so i was doing good damage.
*I'm in two minds about whether i'd go right to blighttown after beating Taurus to get a decently levelled fire weapon if i were to do a SL1 run again.

Squire's been schooling me at fighting games recently, and I don't mean teaching..
I'm forced to confront how terrible I am at fighters, our score for skullgirls is something like 30-1 !
