My first exposure was the Houdini Live album released a year or two ago, but I'm not sure that's the best starter. Maybe go chronological (Gluey Porch Treatments, Ozma, Bullhead...)

Sort of rediscoverd Miles lately. It isn't that I suddenly like him more than I ever did before, but I think I'm diggin him more for atmosphere and the fact that I can play him in a public setting (IE in my classroom, grading papers while students are mulling around before or after school) and not get any weird looks. Not that Bitches Brew is the new muzak or anything, but my Ipod picked Brotzman's Machinegun to play the other day, and that was probably a bit much!!

So, making this topical, I just re-purchased On the Corner, which I'd had a cd-r burn of for a long time and known as a great album, but just never put the money down. $9 new from the local newbury comic.

Well, at least of the more modern crop. I still pine for dirty Ripcord/ND type stuff, too... :P
It's definitely up there. My personal favorite is World Downfall by Terrorizer.
Downloaded a torrent with almost every Melvins album. Needless to say I'm going to be busy for a while.
I have a ton of Melvins too and I think they're pretty hit or miss. Though he's a bit more harsh than I'd be, the reviewer at Digital Metal had it right in his review of their newest album.

"If Buzzo and friends would lose about twenty IQ points and decide to rock bells 24/7, the Melvins would be one of the greatest heavy rock bands of all time, wiping their absolute asses with the Opeths and Mastodons of this world. Instead, they just leave me blue-balled. "

Lysol is where it's at when it comes to the Melvins.

 That's part of why I find it so appealing, Buzz isn't trying to break some record or one up anyone.

In my opinion when bands start competing with each other like this ("I want to be more ____ than ____,") it usually leads to "dumber" music, say, 20 IQ points lower than Melvins . Look at what happened to speed metal.

A. wtf do Opeth and Mastodon have to do with each other? Why would Opeth ever be mentioned in a line about "heavy rock bands"? That's not nearly their schtick, is it? B. Remission is better than whatever failed potential the Melvins had/have. C. This guy needs to listen to Karp's Self Titled LP and forget about the Melvins/reviewing.

I don't think his point was so much about competition and them being better than other bands, rather I think he was saying that they would be much more impressive if they had more focus. I think we've all played good games otherwise ruined by half finished ideas, thats essentially what he's saying happens to the Melvins. They produce some amazing rock and proceed to get side tracked turning what would otherwise be an amazing record into an average one.
A. wtf do Opeth and Mastodon have to do with each other? Why would Opeth ever be mentioned in a line about "heavy rock bands"? That's not nearly their schtick, is it?
I think he just used them as examples of bands that are universally held in high regard. Bad comparisons though, I agree.

I've recently discovered Miles Davis for the first time with any vigour and i have to say he was pretty damn good. I've got 5 or 6 albums from around his career and not only is Miles' playing interesting and emotionally charged, his band selection is almost impecable. Coltrane was a god, and hearing him and Cannonball on Dr. Jackle makes me sex wee

@ CMoon: Good call on "On the Corner", sir.

@ sjewkestheloon: I highly recommend "In a Silent Way". Also, If you like "Milestones", peep "Workin'" and "Round About Midnight", if you don't already have 'em. Tastiness.

On topic:

Husker Du - Zen Arcade
The Hellacopters - Cream of the Crap: Collected Non-Album Works Vol.2
River City Tanlines - I'm Your Negative
Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers - Indestructible
Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales

Still obsessed with power pop

The Pixies - Doolittle
Unrest - Cath Carroll/So Sick 7" ($4 at teenbeat website w/free shipping) (the So Sick on Perfect Teeth is better)
The Pastels - Mobile Safari
Shonen Knife - Genki Shock
David Bowie - Earthling
Various Ramones, AC/DC

Need to find more recent bands like these

edit - I downloaded the 'Beat It' music video and it's pretty sweet, great song, nice moves.

Regarding Davis (and his fusion stuff, not the free/modal bop you're talking about), I've always had a fondness for 'Get up on it'...not only a great title, but another great double album. Also Dark Magus is a pretty sizzlin' live album by him (better I think thank 'live evil' and 'Agharta'.) Its amazing though, basically if you like Bitches Brew, you end up with this huge list of albums to dig:

In a Silent Way
Bitches Brew (double)
Get up on it (double)
Live Evil (double)
Agharta (double)
Pangea (double)
Big Fun (double)
Dark Magus (double)
On the Corner
Tribue to Jack Johnson (I assume this would go on the list too...)

I think there are others. I only have half of these for no good reason. Its kind of silly when you think about the quantity of this stuff. Of course, it isn't all the same. Silent Way is quite a different thing than On the Corner, but really, if you are listening to one, you can listen to the othre.

@madsteel: can you believe the newburry had no 'aftrica/brass'? I'll have to special order.

I already have In A Silent Way, and it was the album that converted me to the cause of Miles. I haven't tried any of the other fusion stuff though and that may be my next stop, possibly Bitches Brew.

I've just finished the Miles Davis: So What book by someone i can't remember (He also did a Sun Ra book i think) and it's left me with a list of about 70 records to pick up, more if you include Monk, Rollins, Coltrane, Art Blakey, etc, etc.

Love Black Saint and Lady Sinner by Mingus too, and need to pick up more of his stuff. The wailing brass is magical.

Melt Banana - Cell-Scape
Boris/Sunn - Altar
Iron Monkey - s/t (Trufax: I've been chatting away to Steve Watson on MSN for years.)
Morbid Angel - Formulas Fatal to the Flesh (Still their best, imho.)
Estradasphere - Buck Fever (Not out of any "tenuous links to metal" BS, Seth may be relieved to know. :P)

Man, I love Melt-Banana. Love them. I probably say this of too many bands, but their detractors must be DEAD INSIDE.

How is this? Some say it's a masterpiece and others say it's a watered down version of both bands and Sunn O))) was too controlling. I'll probably end up getting it either way.

That's not an unfair appraisal, to be honest. It's not really as heavy or as droney as either band's finer moments, but I love it for what it is. It's just nice to have "bitesize" slab of drone with a sense of direction. :D

The problem is, that may be his single greatest album. As far as Mingus goes, how can one not love Mingus? It's all really damn good, but 'Black saint' is so damn good its hard to match. The best stuff I've really heard by him was live material, but I have no idea what album it was off of because it was a compilation.

Certainly though one can't go wrong with Mingus.

I'm sorry if this is going off-topic but could someone tell me about Agharta? It seems from looking around review sites to be the best of Davis's fusion albums. I have the track Moja 1 from Dark Magus and I wanna know how the stuff on Agharta compares to it since I don't want to end up with a double album full of stuff like Moja 1. I wasn't a fan of the dissonant trumpet and endless funk riffing even though it definitely created a frightful atmosphere. Is Agharta more "normal?"

Not off topic, but I also don't know if I'm qualified to answer your question. I honestly haven't heard that album, but don't particularly remember it as any particular best. For myself, I find that my 'best' are Get Up On It and Dark Magus, so if it is tracks like those that are dissapointing you, I'd hardly know what to recommend.

I do know, however, that you should stay away from Big Fun which is nearly endless dissonant trumpet and aimless riffing (I'm starting to really dig this album actually.)

Do you remember most of Magus's material? Moja 1 is only one track so if you could describe some of the others on it that would be great. Also, thanks for the recommendations on what I should stay away from since even his fusion material has a big catalog.

But Charles Mingus rules, regardless.

Axon: Don't know if this helps but just listening to Jack Johnson tonight and it seems VERY accessible. All major chords, just straight up funk-fusion. Doubt you can miss with that.

Honestly, you probably ought to just start out with In a Silent Way, Jack Johnson and Bitches Brew. If your still intrigued, you can start exploring.

I don't know about In A Silent Way but I heard Jack Johnson was really repetitive and that Bitches Brew was made useless because of the supposedly much better versions of its compositions on the Fillmore performances It's About That Time and Black Beauty. Though I might give Jack Johnson a try from your input. I bet the first ones I'll get will be Agharta and It's About That Time since curiousity will get the better of me eventually and It's About That Time was pretty much imprinted as essential from the so many positive reviews.
