Disparity between what you believed the job entailed per the interview and description, and what's asked of you once you start. This is an enormous problem in InfoSec, and I'm interested in knowing if those of you who work in other facets of IT experience this same sort of shit. I left my last gig for this reason: 2 weeks after I start, a project that's been germinating for 12 months is dumped on my lap; "you're the lead and you're responsible for the success of the project." I stood the solution up then fucked off. I've been at a new shop for 6 weeks, and can already smell the fire. Actually, I can fucking see it: email from oblivious lead with an irretrievably stupid and unrealistic expectation. I'm about to fucking lose it.

Amazon is its own PayPal. As in, Amazon is actively in the same payment processing segment as PayPal with their Amazon Payments [well, "Amazon Pay" nowadays] service.
They are in direct competition with PayPal, and have been for the last decade.

Eh, didn't know that. Every time I pay I only see credit cards as options, I've never noticed "Amazon Pay"

amazon payments is the service they use for other sites. it allows you to use your payment options that you use for amazon to be fulfilled through them. not as common at all as paypal as an option, but you'll see it in a few places.

The machine part will be true for me too I'm sure, but if there is one thing living here for 14 years has taught me - always have ear plugs.

The down side is if I sleep without them, even if I am by mom's where it is quiet, the slightest noise will wake me up:D

I bought it to keep my dog calm when I first adopted him, but a good quality white noise generator can work miracles with noisy neighbors.
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

The whirring of a phat Xbox 360 makes all outside noises sound like ambiance in comparison. It's great for making one feel less lonely as well.

If it'll make you feel better, I was asked to break RSA the day I started my new job. I was given one week to complete the task.

Makes me feel bad for you, and reinforces my complaint. Turnover is high; ppl learn a new skill and immediately realize they can command a 20-30k increase, so they take off (and who can blame them). Every shop I've been at is shorthanded, and half have 'managers' with their cissp (oddly, their only cert...) whom I have a natural fear of. There's a gamestop job description being passed around among friends & peers. One of the ~30 bullets is: deploy, manage, tune, and monitor SIEM, IPS/IDS, DLP, and Web Gateway. :?:

people who upload no miss runs to youtube under the pretense that they're legitimate when it's super obvious they're a complete amateur at the game. there are so, so fucking many of these people.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0LNEHuSEWM

watch the world's luckiest man do a run through of chomakaimura where he only takes a single hit

there's one person on youtube who does this who i am pretty sure also faked his own death (complete with actual funeral). his "father" allegedly runs his channel now, saying every 5 or so videos there "only about 10 left" to upload, repeatedly.

- - - - -

edit: have i complained about this same thing before and linked another video? god, i don't remember. this is something that bothers me so often i'm sure i've complained about it numerous times, off-forum.

If something's labeled as a "longplay", don't ever count on it being legitimate. I don't think they are even trying to hide it.

As I see it Longplays are like documentation/ demo gallery videos, just longer which means more or less a coverage of a complete run, sometimes with added branching/paths or a single specific mode if it's deemed more complete and better representative of the game's contents.
That said, I don't know how the people who make those value their own 'work' (do they brag or are they honest/modest about what they do?)

longplays.org's channel mentions on nearly every video that they're tool-assisted, at least. that, and one of their main runners (schlauchi?) often tries to learn basic, competent play and edit his videos to be demonstrative of how to play the game as opposed to bumbling through it with an itchy savestate button as quickly and stupidly as possible. i've seen other people specifically just say "no hit" or "no death" run without mention of "longplay" and then bask in praise they receive (including said person who i seriously think faked his death).

i one time pointed out to someone numerous points in which it showed they were a total amateur who no-way-in-hell wasn't using tool assist on a run of werewolf: the last warrior for nes (his video description explicitly stated "no cheats were used"). his response? to tell me that he practiced it a lot as a kid and prepared significantly for the run, even though he clearly didn't understand basic boss patterns, wasted time frequently, abused i-frames from constant backflipping and was miraculously never punished despite doing it at stupid times, etc. werewolf, for the record, is a quite difficult and very janky game that you will absolutely have early portions of drilled into memory before a clear. i posted again disproving him, and he just deleted both my comments and his own.

... and then he made another video shortly after that (i don't think i realized until more than a year after when looking the game up again) where he still played like an amateur, but tried to make it look better. guy still has both videos up, too  really thought at the time i could somehow get this guy to admit to himself that yes, he uses tools, but nope, stuck with it until the bitter end. i should have known better than to argue with one of these people. man, it just pisses me off to see blatant cheaters live some sort of lie just for the extremely pathetic kudos of a few people on the internet being impressed with your fake bullshit.

if you care for the channel name, it's "nintendocomplete." these kinds of emulator tourists lying and looking for internet validation are very common, and had me frankly convinced that people like perikles (those with a jaw-droppingly diverse portfolio of experience and a ton of legitimate 1cc's/no misses) did not exist until coming here.

What?

Long Play comes from youtube kids not knowing something awful and the reading of LP for Let's Play. It's particularly widespread in german commhnities because they never figured it out as far as I know.

smooth scrolling code on websites
Leave that shit to the browser [shit, pretty much all the current browsers do smooth scrolling on their own]. Doing it on the page just ends up making it hard to use the touchpad to finely scroll, it slides around like a drunk on ice. I just want to scroll a line or two and then it zooms like 4-5 lines with the slightest movement.

A - new - MicroSD card that works once in ten times and only with the device for which you don't need it.

Also shitty over-sensitive adapters that lock cards with the faintest disruption, like gently touching the computer with the tip of your fingers.

It's been beyond me for a long time why the world praises MicroSD cards, they're too fucking small and fragile, and yes for me there's a point where the benefits of miniaturization end and the smallness becomes a problem.

Just think about how stupid these things are; they're so damn small and you stuff precious stuff on them...but all are painted goddman black! so they can better escape your sight when they fall on the floor and - inevitably - slide under something in a dark corner!

Why do finals have their own special schedules? It'd be much easier on everyone to just use the normal class schedules instead of causing potential conflicts and making people show up to class half an hour earlier.

I just hope to god all of my finals are on the same day.

No one actually likes microSD as a physical format, it's just really cheap and well supported by the industry and the small size means that converters to a bunch of other formats are available [because those formats died after microSD] , like microSD to Memory Stick Pro Duo adapters.
be stupid wary of extra-cheap microSD cards [like, cheaper than usual] and do an h2testw run on pretty much any card that stores anything important to see if it's fake or a dud, avoid off-brand microSDs like the plague
the only good thing is that they're so cheap these days that a dud card doesn't really matter as long as it doesn't die with your information on it, you just get another

still, I hate losing them, and I hate microSD USB adapters to hell and back, they really are universally finicky and shit

I ended up buying a credit-card sized horrid salmon colored microSD holder to avoid losing my cards -- you almost literally cannot lose this thing from your view, nothing else in all the cosmos is that hideous shade of pinkish orange red [it's actually hurting my eyes to look at and figure out what color it is]. Has a little lanyard hole too. Probably one of my best purchases.
the one issue is that if you do drop it into some irretrievable hole, you can lose up to ten microSD cards at once [eleven if you're brave enough to stick one in a size adapter and put that in the big SD card slot]
it is very definitely putting your eggs into one basket
In an ideal world, the smallest media would probably be CompactFlash so it'd be harder to lose the damn things. 8)

also, at least Samsung has the good sense to make their cards out of white plastic [which has the added bonus of making it easier to identify counterfeits, so only the back should be black on a proper Samsung-made microSD card [still dunno why they do this, I've never seen a microSD card without a black back] -- if the sides are black with the white+colored label, it's a fake and will probably eat your data]

Yes well I skipped an unknown brand for a Transcend + adapter and got screwed...ran all possible checks, nah it's just a bad one.

Your idea of a flashy (!) holder isn't bad, because you can't really put stickers on MicroSD cards, and colored permanent markers don't work on matte black.
Didn't know the Samsung are white though.
