Ninja Gaiden Sigma (PS3) - human decapitations edited out in the PAL version don't bother me as I don't feel much attracted to the settings, story etc. here anyways. The combat engine is my kind of good, though, worth putting up with the camera's quirks and other not-so-great aspects.

Wrapped The Order: 1886 last night.
I quite liked it, though I do understand the criticisms. No, it doesn't offer anything new gameplay wise, it's your standard Quicktime event peppered 3rd person shooter, but it has a great sense of atmosphere and a cool setting. (When was the last time you played a AAA game with alternate history late 1800s London as the setting?) Plus its so.... pretty, it's probably the first legit-photorealistic game I can recall playing. Definitely a showpiece for what next gen games can look like. Also probably has the best voice acting I've ever heard in a game. The game is about 8 hours, so it also doesn't overstay it's welcome and the pacing feels just right. I admit I can't stand the letterboxed 16x10 presentation, it would have worked if the camera could be backed up from your character more, but since it's right over the shoulder, there were times it was hard to see enemies shooting at me because they were behind a black bar.
Will you like it? Depends what you want out of it. If you just want a fun, gorgeous romp thru a unique setting with standard TPS gameplay, you'll like it. If you demand some sort of new paradigm for the genre then stay away. I got it for 10 bucks new on a recent EB Games/Gamestop sale, it was worth it.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Furthering my new-gen bender I've been on since my black Friday PS4 purchase, I played Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons.
Apparently this was on Xbox360 2 years ago, but I'd never heard of it until I saw it in the store at a budget game price. It's an interesting little artsy-puzzler, where you control 2 brothers at the same time, using one controller, each one mapped to a thumbstick. It's a little weird at first, and I never got completely used to it, luckily the game doesn't really too much on reflexes, so it doesn't matter much. The game introduces new mechanics at just the right pace, and the games short 3 hour length is just perfect for a game like this. It's a little more interactive than say... Journey, and has a similar somber feel as Limbo. It's clearly a last-gen game spruced up a bit for PS4, but it has good art design, and the sound is fantastic, I'll have to find the OST.
I'd recommend it if you like games like Journey or Limbo, tho it's not quite a combination of the two.

Spoiler
...death of the older brother was unexpected, and kinda tragic, so I guess the designer was following the Joss Whedon school of storytelling. I'd admit that the game would have been a bit more compelling had you played as the now-solo younger brother a bit longer.

Yep, FE is my favorite series all-time and it's because of the chess-like feel. But lately at the end of the day when I've got a little time for gaming, I'm too wiped out for this sort of rigor. Stella Glow is a better fit right now.Blinge wrote:Perma death in FE is why you'd probably need to be playing at 100% constantly..
The amount of times I fuck up and lose a character because I just skipped over a possibility, or wasn't looking with a broad enough view, or straight up forgot an enemy is there, is far too often. It's why I always sucked at chess, too.
Started the new Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. I was being a bit too casual and failed to complete a mission. I got angry at myself for sucking and now I'm a bit motivated to do some damage in some dungeons.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Ninja Gaiden II
Seeing Zaarock and Cagar stream this a couple of weeks ago made me want to start playing again. I replayed the campaign on Mentor, but I've spent most of my time trying to improve my survival mode scores. So far I've managed two new PBs: 14.8m with the Dragon Sword and 13.4m with the Lunar. I did both of those before I really figured out (or remembered lol) their best hit-confirms for Genshin, so I hope I'll be able to improve them now that I can fight him more efficiently.
My ultimate goal is to get the highest total score across all survival missions, but I don't think I'll be able to do it. Right now I'm in second with 117m, which is ~19m behind the top player (YROGRVLNT). It's just really hard to improve any of my scores at this point since I'll need to make it to the 4th, 5th, or 6th loops to have a chance. It doesn't help that YRO is basically the Yusemi of Ninja Gaiden. The guy set all of his scores several years ago and he's still a mile ahead of everybody else who's played the game.
If it weren't for Futari's God Mode, NG2 would be my favorite game of all time. I don't think there will ever be a better action game given the way the industry's moving, 3D or otherwise. God Mode is just totally perfect, though. Not even Cave managed to top it.

I started playing Dark Souls again, this time on PC; this time I intend to finish it (never even got to blight town when I played it on the 360).
I'm trying to do a holy knight build, with somewhat high faith for sunlight spear and divine weapons, and more of a focus on strength over dexterity. I probably should invest more points into endurance and vitality soon...

I'm not playing any game due to the freakin' insane grind at work, BUT I keep thinking of Ninja Gaiden Sigma in a way I haven't thought of a single game so obsessively for a while. What a naughty, NAUGHTY old little girl of a slasher. She knows when it's time to be frivolous.
As a matter of fact I can't remember this kind of infatuation since God Hand when it was pretty new.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
I've been playing divinity original sin quite a bit this week. I'm really enjoying it so far, but it took me a few tries before I felt like I was getting into it. I've never played a crpg before so I didn't really understand some of the systems and ended up not being happy with the characters I created or killing someone I didn't really want to or doing some other stupid thing. I restarted like 3 times before I was happy with how things were going.
even though I've put quite a few hours in I'm not far at all. I only recently started venturing outside of cyseal and have now cleared out the lighthouse. the combat is really cool, kind of like a fantasy setting xcom and you can (or I can/do) just die or lose in almost any fight once you leave cyseal, so there is a lot of tension when you're out exploring.
I've been feeling recently like I just don't have the patience for rpgs any more after starting and failing to get into several games, so I'm quite surprised to be liking this one. it's really slow going, I'm spending A LOT of time just messing about in menus, sending items to different characters, crafting etc. this will probably be less of a factor the further I get into the game though.

Finally back on La Mulana. Got a notebook handy and I'm starting to get the hang of it, it's really fun.
Though it's a slight case of backdown: the game. "Argh I took a lot of damage and this place is slightly dangerous, better warp out.. again.."
That mausoleum boss is hella annoying.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
After a while you'll have more health and that stops being much of an issue. For me the game became a point'n'click adventure: you get stuck, spend days trying everything to solve a puzzle, finally solve it and progress a bit more, get stuck again. I've been stuck for over a month and I almost feel like giving up now. Curious to see how far you'll go.Blinge wrote:Finally back on La Mulana. If you're playing on Steam, here's a tip: screenshot every stone tablet you come across. That way you have all messages neatly saved in a folder you can check anytime. Wish I had thought of that earlier.
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Beat the first Resident Evil Revelations & started on Raid Mode, which is great.
The main game is okay. It plays more like 5 than 6 but with more emphasis on horror like 4 so that's good. Story is still stupid but that's been the case ever since Code: Veronica so you know what to expect.
Raid mode is pretty damn great so far & I'm enjoying it just as much as the Mercenaries Mode from other entries. It's quite different & yet so similar in ways. Here's hoping that one day they give Mercs another chance at a standalone game.
I also finished Operation Raccoon & found it to be pretty rickety. It really feels like an unfinished game that could have been good say, on PS2.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
been playing hacknet and having loads of fun with it. also recently restated darkest dungeon (one of the more challenging and enjoyable games ive played in years).
was playing ac: syndicate, but it's so goddamn easy and lifeless. black flag was a gem, and had it's moments of difficulty.
i may pick up ac: rogue if it goes on sale during the christmas steam sale this year.
still occasionally playing war thunder, but after 2k hours logged it's getting a bit repetitive.
truth is, i feel like i'm just waiting around for Dark Souls III.

couldn't agree more. my most recent build is using the silver knight and demon spear(s) exclusively. haven't played in a while, but what a phenomenal game.kaicooper wrote:

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Been playing some KOF13 [Steam]. Had a couple matches online with some random guy. Got bopped a bit, definitely need to get back into it, I play 13 way too much like I would 02. Latency was pretty awful, but what can I do.
no one plays 02UM online because the netcode is so awful, had like one match in slow motion
I think I've gotten that game to run well online once, ever.
Also, I played some Crazy Taxi [Steam]. Got $12k this time, not too bad, not too great. Still trying to hit 20k, my best is just shy of $15k.
screwing up on the highway and near the entrance of it [on both sides] is the worst, absolutely murders your time, good bye 4-8 seconds, never to return

Yeah I can see how game-logic and real logic are gonna interfere with each other.. that and I'm not the most lateral thinker so this could be interesting indeed.

I got to level 14 of Trench mode, with Jill at level 28, and it didn't feel like I was making progress anymore.
I did just get to level 80 in Revelations 2's raid mode, which fixes a lot of things wrong with the original, and adds a lot more variety, but still is tedious at times. Level 80 Barry so far.
By the way, make sure you link a Resident Evil . NET account, if you didn't already, so you can take part in the online competitions and get goodies.

ultra street fighter 4, not exactly having the most fun but i guess that's what i get for trying to get into a game which people have been playing for 7 years now. Still has a bunch of stuff that turned me off from super turbo just less annoying i guess. Not sure if i prefer this or third strike. Third strike gameplay is better but SF 4 execution is a lot easier for me. Got stuff like reversals and throw techs within 5 minutes yet never got those in third strike. I hate execution in fighting games but just something i'll have to deal with espeically since my main (juri) is one of the most execution heavy characters.

Tomb Raider Anniversary on Steam. I'm loving it, always wanted to play the first Tomb Raider since playing the demo on a MSDOS machine back at the 90s but never got the chance.
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
The original TR still holds up pretty well too, and is worth playing even if you've played Anniversary. Have fun!
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Just finished TR anniversary. It unlocked developers (one of them from the original game) commentaries when replaying levels (must interact with crystals placed on the terrain to hear what they say about that section), great feature for fans of the series. I just replayed the first two levels to get missing relics and artifacts, the comments are really interesting, and specially for those who played the original game back then, I guess.Ed Oscuro wrote:The original TR still holds up pretty well too, and is worth playing even if you've played Anniversary.
