Yet more stuff bumped off the watch list ..

Patlabor: I watched all the OVAs and movies. The movies are definitely the highlight here, although the second OVA series delives into the character's lives and personalities a lot more, so watch that first. The third movie is definitely the oddest one and the main cast almost feels like a cameo in it.

Penguin Musume Heart: Just plain stupid animu comedy, but it was still amusing enough to keep watching. Also contains a lot of random fanservice scenes.

Shihaisha no Tasogare: More Masao Maruyama stuff. Has some really wierd scenes, including one that made me feel like I was watching some warhammer 40K Slaneesh shit. If you like Masao Maruyama, it's worth a watch.

Crest of the Stars: Based on a novel, it's a space adventure / war drama. It's pretty much entirely focused on the two main characters. Really liked this one and the sequel.

Banner of the Stars: Direct sequel, with a lot more space battles and focus on the ongoing war. Has a lot of really slow moving dialogue sections to go along with the action, so might not be for everyone. There's also another season and an OVA that expands the story further.

Just watched Sora yori mo Tooi Basho... DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDE, Mio is always the best girl in all these kind of dumb girls doing dumb shit shows.

Hisone to Masotan was my favorite thing from this spring animu season, and Hinamatsuri was damn good, but need more episodes ASAP!

High Score Girl and Chio-chan no Tsuugakuro are coming next, can't wait to watch them.
That Chio-chan's PV from last year was...

Honestly, I am not sure about this upcoming season. There's only one short (Yama no Susume) and two leftovers from last season (Lupin III and Hero Academia) I know I'm going to watch. The rest is really up in the air .. could be good, could be bad.

Sora Yori and Masotan were both great.

I'm still watching Shinkalion. I still think it's wonderful. The overarching plot doesn't seem like anything special, and individual fights aren't too spectacular, but the individual episodes tell a surprisingly strong story, the concept is cool as shit, and the characters are super endearing.
plus, Hatsune fucking Miku showed up for two episodes [and might show up later]
and Shinji Ikari is scheduled to make an appearance in the 500 Type-EVA -- no idea if he's just gonna be just a one-off , but they even got his original voice actor

I desperately wish it turns out to be good, but I fully expect it to be awful, and not in the vaguely charming [if kinda boring] way G-Saviour is.

The Grand Blue anime should start this Wednesday or Thursday, and Gintama has started again. I am very curious about the Tensai Bakabon remake, becuase it should be the same time as Osomatsu-san.

Is there hope in summer?

The Wasted XIII movie is a true oddity. Not a bad thriller but certainly not good Patlabor material. Although I guess it can be seen as a more serious take on the various mutant stories Patlabor likes to occasionally tell. Still, by far the weakest entry in Patlabor if for no other reason that it's not Patlabor anymore.

The New Files OVA is a winner for me with some shining character moments and chill/meditative scenes amidst the usual hijinks. It also tends to look good, building upon the style of the TV series but a bit more refined.

Note: this will probably be of little interest to anyone, but I felt like I'd work thru my feelings on Berserk here.

I finished what I planned on reading of Berserk. Which is thru volume 22. 21 is where the "Conviction" arc ended, and the "Falcon" arc is where it is supposed to start getting weak...but 22 was sort of in between, so I read it too.

Opinions.... I liked it a whole lot! I usually don't read Manga, and the only other ones I have read are Akira (masterpiece), Domu (really liked it), Lone Wolf and Cub 1-4 (liked it OK, but got repetitive fast), Ghost in the Shell (didn't like it at all...very different tone from the movie. Liked the art), Blade of the Immortal vol...I can't remember (thought it was pretty, but dull), and I think vol. 1 of Battle Royale (it was OK). So, I'm not really into manga, as you can tell. Much more into Western comics.

That being said, this did have some tropes and things in manga, that I'm not fond of (decompression, weird JP humor that I don't quite get, generally a very light read, gets a bit overly soap opera-y at times). But all that aside, I was way into it. Loved the action for the most part, although sometimes it seemed to be so sketchy I couldn't make out what was happening, fully. The art was pretty awesome, overall. Loved the mix of medieval and occult stuff. Wasn't too keen on the homoerotic love triangle, but it was compelling.
I found it to be a very enjoyable read on average, but it blew me away on a couple of occasions. Mainly the endings of the "The Golden Age" arc, and the "Conviction" arc. The Golden Age ending was truly wild, and I was really knocked down by how awesome it was. Conviction's was really exciting, but it couldn't really top Golden Age's, just due to how much time Golden Age put into building up the characters and then all that happened to them. It was pretty emotional.

I did have some issues when Puck came back in the Lost Children arc. I don't recall him being so Roger Rabbit-y in the Black Swordsman arc, and he was a source of frustration for me, despite liking him in the first arc. I was relieved when they introduced that kid for comedy relief, and it seemed to tone down the emphasis on Puck. And the kid (can't remember his name) fit better, humor-wise.

The hentai stuff was a bit shocking, at times. I know the book starts with Guts screwing some monster chick, but it seemed to want to top itself a few times. First, the sex scene between...umm...no spoilers...two main characters. He seemed to put as much effort and time into that screwing scene as he did in most of the most epic battles. It was a bit cathardic, but was pretty gratuitous. I don't have much to say on it, as I knew that going in.
THEN, the orgy scenes in Conviction seemed to cross into hentai territory. Like with what it was willing to show. Before the genitals would be kind of sketchy, and I felt he was doing that so he could "get away with it", but the stuff in that scene was a lot more graphic. You could clearly see the double penetration, and blow job stuff going on. It was a bit eyebrow raising. I'm a little unclear on how Japan rates and sells stuff. But this seemed X-rated at times, and I'm not sure where they sell this in stores or whatever.

Anyway, that was just me going over my thoughts about it. I really enjoyed it. I wouldn't put it up with Akira, as that is probably my 4th favorite comic ever, but it was really awesome stuff. Unfortunately, I can't get any of my friends to read it. The only one I know that would be sort of into comics like that doesn't really like manga at all, and this has enough of the tropes and stuff where he would probably be turned off pretty fast by it. Which is a shame, and I would love to discuss it with some people around here. Not happening.

I've been reading a lot of comics lately, and the only thing that topped the climax to the Golden Age arc, was the climax to Jonathan Hickman's Fantastic Four arc (which I think melted some of my brain, with how epic it was).

Not much else to add, as I know it's a favorite amongst manga fans, and I'm just adding to it's praise. But Akira was still better, and it's almost like it's such a cliche of how good Akira is, that people don't mention it. They want to mention something a "bit" less well known. Then again, it could be that people just watched the anime, and skipped the manga (wrong decision). Akira's manga takes it to another level in volumes 4 and 5. Exhilarating stuff.

Anyway, that's it. Great stuff. Very glad I got to read it. Things in my life are quite dark right now, so the escapism was much appreciated.

Dirty Pair: It's the infamous duo (and their pet something-or-other) that leaves a trail of destruction .. er, necessary collateral damage wherever they go. Honestly, it's a mixed bag. The only stuff I really liked were the original TV series, the 10 episode OVA, and Flight 005 Conspiracy (which is probably the best and one I'd recommend if you plan on watching any of it).

Crusher Joe: Sci-fi "special agent" series #2, I guess. The movie was way too long. They could have removed entire scenes and it'd be fine. To it's credit, the animation quality is consistent the entire way through. Final Weapon Ash is an absolute must-watch.

Bio Hunter: You know you're watching some shit when the OVA opens with a sex scene where the woman's tits turn into a mouth and bite the guy's arm clean off.

Cybernetics Guardian: Pretty average OVA, worth a watch if you've got nothing else to. lol

Love Dirty Pair.

The OVA series (sometime called either Dirty Pair 2 or Original Dirty Pair) is among my very top "comfort food" animu to watch, must have seen it like 50 times at least. Fun stories/settings with great espionnage/action. And the character drawings are actually extremely solid, some of the best in a series of that era. Kei and Yuri look mighty fine here *bites lip* It's a joy to watch. Light and easy-going. yet well directed stuff. Pretty much all episodes of Dirty Pair 2 are fun

I have the Nozomi dvd(great picture quality!) and it's a prized possession of mine, for sure.

You know you're watching some AWESOME. Bio-Hunter is the tits.

Kei and Yuri were the babes that got me balls deep into anime. The books are pretty fun, too (and you see this Kei & Yuri briefly in the Crusher Joe movie), and Mughi (their cat sidekick) is a full-on Coeurl (think D&D Displacer Beast) with tentacles instead of the goofy fluffball like in the anime. Which also got me into A.E. van Vogt's Voyage of the Space Beagle, which features the original coeurl. So I thank Dirty Pair for a lot. They're my babes of all babes.

All the other stuff can be skipped though in my book. Flash is kinda gross in the 90's design department and their American comics counterparts are equally as stupid looking. With they'd go back to the basics and do the real meal deal.

Yeah, doesn't exactly require a lot of brain power to watch this series. Some of the episodes are almost formulatic. Definitely light watching.

I read it regularly. I find it a great reading, even if the art somehow reminds me of '90s superheroes comics.
It is one of those few manga that captures well the debauchery of Uni (undergrad) years, while at the same time having great characters with a strong sense of camaraderie, interesting stories and at times it manages to be on topic, even (it should be about scuba diving, I guess  ). It might be that I am biased because I did get royally drunk on a regular basis, during my BA, but it turned out fine

This, Tatami Galaxy (my uni life was a bit like this one) and Honey & Clover are three very different but beautiful renditions of campus life. Seinen manga seem not to like this type of setting from what I can see, which is a great shame. I guess that otaku are too poor and stupid to attend unis to relate to these topics (it does not help that they are pointlessly expensive, of course).
Given that most anime is for hopeless otaku and other random rabble (say, Udderdude), this is not surprising.

For the record: I never passed out from the excessive drinking, except graduation day. However, a friend of mine was found sleeping on a tree after graduating, and the police asked me how he got there. As i woke up from my pased-out sleep, I also wonder how on Earth he was able to get there, with his testamur tightly clutched in his hands. The police agents were simply too dumbfounded to do anything except asking questions, and they even treated me to breakfast (in Italy, at the time, you could get royally smashed and sleep anywhere as long as you would not disturb anyone or litter).

Good times

Gosenzo-sama Banbanzai: If you're looking for an anime about time-traveling incest in the style of a classic play, this is probably your only option. An early, experimental work by Mamoru Oshii. Definitely not for everyone, it's very unique.

Legend of Lemnear: A fantasy OVA that also has fanservice, like Plastic Little, also with character designs by Satoshi Urushihara. Although not nearly as much, and it's pretty disturbing at some points. The last act/final battle actually ends up taking half the runtime, feels like they could have added some additional story scenes and made it shorter. So it's pretty dirt simple, but still fun to watch.

Angel Cop: It's special forces vs. terrorists vs. psychics vs. cyborgs vs. the military. Quite a messy setup that results in a whirlwind of destruction that's massively entertaining, but very stupid. The apparent anti-semitism led the US dub to remove all references to it, which made the plot make even less sense. Still good fun to watch, though.

Ariel: Aliens are invading Earth! Except they have budgetary problems .. and the lone resistance giant mecha fighter pilot doesn't want to because she has to study for her college entrance exams. This one is kind of a silly parody of science fiction anime. Worth a watch, IMO.

Blood Reign: Pretty standard feudal Japan mythology/horror OVA. Has lots of monsters and despair in equal measure.

I pray for a massive localization project to bring the entirety of Golgo 13 to English speaking countries.

Also smaller projects to translate all the older Ultraman mangas. There's nothing to be found of them online :(

This seems true of the old MegaMan mangas as well.
