How does that work? Probably a stupendous question, heh.
In the shmups world, high scores and clears are generally only considered valid if you use no continues. Continuing often disables score entry and/or resets your score. Single credit is a rule for the high score threads here as well.

Just because we're a masochistic bunch. :)
Ah, makes sense. Well in that case I doubt I will get a decent score on RSG anytime soon, since concentrating on both surviving and the complex scoring mechanisms in the game require a little more skill than I can handle haha! I bought a bunch of Cave ios games earlier and scoring and surviving is a lot more...natural I suppose. Atleast in Mushihimesama original mode anyway.
The worst bit is that in RSG, scoring and survival are directly related -- your score determines your weapon levels. So if you were playing Arcade mode, you have to try for score to make your weapons strong enough to even deal with later levels [unless you feel like timing out every boss/using your sword for everything].

Saturn mode is at least nice enough to keep your weapon levels, so you just need to survive. It feels pretty bad killing earlier bosses before they can fire though, now that your weapon level is way past what the boss was balanced for... :3
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Hello!

About a week ago I was browsing the internet when I found a post about Darius Gaiden. It looked fun and I got curious so I decided to install MAME. I started playing it and instantly fell in love with SHMUPS. I mean I got seriously addicted.

Then I found this forum a few days ago and realized that there were so many other good SHMUPS to choose from. Which is when I found DoDonPachi and got even more addicted to SHMUPS. In fact, the only reason I am sitting here typing this instead of playing DDP is because my firing thumb hurts too much to continue playing.

I love the feel of getting better that these games give me, and even more I love the exhilarating feel of beating a hard boss for the first time.

I want to learn about this genre, and I hope to continue getting better at the games.

Hello there, I'm Azure and I'm from MD. I love shooters, my faves being Zanac, Triggerheart Excelica and ESPerade. Came across this site looking for DoDonPachi-related info. Thought I'd join up and have some fun:)

Welcome in! I'm relatively new too, but there's nothing quite like the experience of these games -- it's pretty rare that something just FEELS so good to play. Any favorites of the bunch so far? :)

In case you didn't know, if you hold F2 to go into the test menu, early Cave games (Donpachi/DoDonpachi/Progear) have an option to enable button 3 as a rapidfire key, so you don't have to tap button 1 for rapid shot.

Definitely DoDonPachi. I played Jamestown at one point, and this feels better than Jamestown in every way possible. Also Darius Gaiden, because giant robot fish.

That is some extremely helpful information.

I'm a Finnish Touhou player, played for a while.

I'm quite bad at Touhou, I do not have nifty clears-list with several games or stuff. I have beaten IN easy a few times.

Hi Seppo! It's nice to meet you; I apologize for insulting you in that other thread, I still feel pretty bad about that. I'm kind of terrible at shmups, but that's part of what makes the genre so fun! I plan on beating Futari sometime before I die.

RE: Jamestown, I'm not really sure what it is about that game, it SEEMS to have everything that I would enjoy (except for the vache system), but I just can't have any fun playing it. I don't get it! Dodonpachi, on the other hand, just kind of rocks.

Hallo all! Just joined up. I'm loving Cave and Psikyo shooters. I'm about to start building my own little arcade machine (Xbox mame - MC Cthulu board - controls I haven't decided yet, prob. Seimitsu) so I'm sure I'll be asking lots of questions about that.
What else...ah, I occasionally do cartridge art for AtariAge.com (Atari 2600 games - not really enough sprites on screen to be of interest here) and I write/illustrate a little webcomic featuring a robot who speaks BASIC (well, somebody had to) at basiccomic.com

Really look forward to speaking with you all, the level of knowledge on this site has been invaluable so far.

Hi folks,

i was following various threads, mostly hardware related, for a long time and always found them very helpful and informative. So i thought why not contributing to the community. I'm mostly into retro games, the famicom especially, and interested in the electrical and software engineering behind the systems. I live in Germany and currently studying informatics.

I suggest you start a thread on the main page, preferably with a poll, asking whether psikyo or CAVE shmups are better.

So as I said in the "Cave-STG is Closing Down" thread, I've been procrastinating about joining this board for years. For no logical reason. I've just been lurking, and lurking, and lurking...

But anyways, now that Cave-STG is gone, I have no more excuse not to be here.

Backstory, because everyone cares:
I've been playing shmups since forever. I'm an engineering student at UCLA, and as a result of having little free time to sink into RPGs or other more intensive games I've been really immersing myself in shmups. I'm very much into CAVE titles at the moment, and just bought a candy cab!

Hello there. I'm a long time visitor of these forums, but only now decided to register. Most of the time I play all kinds of games, but from time to time I get an itch only a shmup can scratch, so I come looking for recommendations from the experienced people here.
I'm not a very good player. In fact, I'm positive I suck at shmups in general. My clear list is embarrassingly small and I mostly play for survival, having a lot of trouble just with that, but I think this is the most distilled form of videogaming and almost nothing comes close to the adrenaline injection shmups provide. So, yeah, I'm not exactly a good or dedicated player, but I enjoy the hell out of the time I spend with these games and I'm always looking for more.
See you guys around, then.

Hello all. I thought I would just introduce myself before I start posting and asking questions! I discovered this site very recently and I have to say it has been absolutely invaluable and highly informative. 8) I have only recently gotten back into shooters after picking up a cheap multi-region PS2 and a PAL copy of Strikers 1945 - and now I'm hooked! Seriously, realising I could flip my little TV on its side to play in 'tate mode has changed my gaming world forever! Anyway, that's my little story of how I came to be here, and I look forward to learning much more about these wonderful games! :D

I'm also a newbie around these parts! Been into shmups ever since running into a Raiden Fighters Jet cabinet in a local laundromat several years ago. Finally bit the bullet and got MAME recently, though, and I think it's safe to say I'm now forever hooked on the genre.
RFJ still tends to be my favorite, though!
Anyway, glad to be here! How is everyone?

Thanks to an R-Type machine at Barcade here in Philadelphia my longtime appreciation for shmups has quickly become an obsession. They have a chalkboard listing all the high scores and I would like to eventually see my name on it under the R-Type listing. As much as I love shmups I am not terribly skilled at them so that's what brings me here. I'm here to learn and to discuss other shmups and hopefully get on level to compete for other shmup high scores.

Hello everyone. Main reason I registered was to give rancor feedback every time I bought something from his store. Though lately I've wanted to start participating in conversations. I mainly lurk the strategy sections over here, since I've been trying to figure out which Cave game I want to main (I think I've decided on Mushihimesama). I frequented Cave-STG a bit before it closed down, though I was mostly a lurker there as well.

I'm not particularly new to shmups, but I've taken a long hiatus from them last gen, due to compulsive RPG hoarding. :P Got reacquainted with them again when I picked up Deathsmiles along with my J-360 awhile back, and have been addicted to them again ever since.

Aside from shmups, I also enjoy rhythm games, and horror games. Between shmups, I've been playing DJMax games, and getting myself hyped up for Technika Tune's release.

Hi @ll =^-^=

I'm here since 1-2 months now but I've never found this topic. Thank you to Ghegs for located it to me. :P

My name is Thomas, into arcade since I'm 24, soon 3 years, and French (don't know if it's a plus or no ^^).
I'm loving particulary plateform, puzzle and fighting games, and more again under 1989's games.
I never played arcade into Pub or other drug stores  , was too younger, but I prefer the feeling of a big/fat Euro-Wood-Cabinet than Japanese one. Maybe because it's cheapest too ... .

I fallen in love for Strider 2 in my early years, last year was Valkyrie and now it's becomming Chelnov. Dreaming of 1CC them but need some Elendil blood.
I'm glad to joined us and could be more happy to meet some of you in some international convention  .
Hoping learn from you a lot.

Best regards,
Thomas
