MUTEMATH - Play Dead
This album is on fire. Prog rock on fine display, and then its like hey, we can still do the alt-rock-pop stuff. So its just insane the different styles, but man every track has top notch synth work going on. I hope this doesn't turn out to be the last album from the group as I'd love to see them make at least one album with Hutch. Recommending the hell out of this!

Have Moicy! by Michael Hurley
That album made me realise that a violin is exactly what lacks in my music. The album is full of joy and quickly became a favorite. After that, I learned how to play Griselda on the guitar and my friends plus people around the beach liked that one very much. I mean, just by looking at this cover you know it is going to be awesome.

Future Funk seems an interesting genre. Cool if you enjoy 80's J-pop with the warm sounds of vaporwave.

Exactly what the title says. Good if you are tired of darksynth or heavier stuff. The Careless Whisper cover is good, worth a listen.

Re: What are you currently listening to?
Revisiting various ol metal favourites. Maiden's Caught Somewhere In Time is a rare gem of unbridled fury and gleaming technique even by the standards of their golden first decade. Listen to that motherfucking space western cyber-gallop, the sterling riffs and perilously spiraling solos over an indifferently massive synth expanse, Bruce's operatic bellow, sneering and wailing with equal furious conviction... immortally fiery stuff. Now, imma blast Killers END-2-END cos that's the Maiden LP this one track reminds me a whole helluva lot of.

Re: What are you currently listening to?
Just when I came home, being somewhat tipsy, the radio I switched on was playing the entire Closer album by Joy Division. Scary how there's no escape from listening to punk rock once you've started. Something one can't hope to grow out of. Personally, I prefer Unknown Pleasures myself, but there is no escape, is it?

Unknown Pleasures for the good times only recognised as such too long after, Closer for the end times. Airing albums end to end is the best

Re: What are you currently listening to?
I'm definitely mostly to Unknown Pleasures myself, but I can easily see that Closer has a lot more depth and unique qualities to it. Also, I I'm not sure I would lump it into the punk category at all, while Unknown Pleasures has to be the poster boy for the entire post punk genre.
Speaking of posters, a framed poster version of the Closer cover graces my bedroom as it has done for at least ten years.

Re: What are you currently listening to?
I actually find Unknown Pleasures a pretty unique record too. I picked it up after Closer expecting a more conventional listen, nearer Substance (singles comp), and was pleasantly surprised (sorry >_> *gunshot*). The ratio of guitar-driven stuff (Disorder, Day of the Lords, New Dawn Fades, Shadowplay, Interzone, Wilderness) to more experimental, atmospheric pieces (Candidate, Insight, I Remember Nothing) is higher, and roughly inverted by Closer, but the latter don't compromise. Meanwhile, She's Lost Control is definite single material but also marvelously weird in its infectiousness - I'd compare it with Closer's Isolation.
Have you guys heard New Order's first album Movement? It's not quite as great as either JD record, but it's still a pretty worthy epitaph imo. Martin Hannet an alchemic star on the mixing desk, as always.

Movement is great stuff. I wouldn't mind New Order having done a bit more of that style before trying desperately to find their new sound.

Re: What are you currently listening to?
Cross-posting with the VGM thread (Naoto Shibata is the patron saint of Castlevania metal): Anthem's amusingly titled 1992 gem DOMESTIC BOOTY. After Judas Priest murdered everyone's faces with 1991's Painkiller only for Rob Halford to leave and the band to go on hiatus, producer Chris Tsangarides recorded this with longtime colleagues and Japanese metal heroes Anthem. Been blasting it loud the last 48 hours - not a weak note on it. It recalls the slightly catchier Defenders of the Faith as much as Painkiller's dominance-reasserting blitzkrieg, but that is of course no bad thing at all. Strong recommend for fans of Priest's heavier Halford-fronted records!

Gig I mentionned above was doooooooooope
Powertrip were great, very nice xover band, didn't expect that. Can't ask for more as far as opening act goes. Place was already packed when they hit the stage, which the guys definitely seem to appreciate. Pretty high energy level from the crowd too
Exodus were a treat, their trash riffs ripped. Crowd was nuts, relentless circle pits after circle pits. Good-sized ones too. At some point the band asked for the old "split in 2 sides and at my signal run into each other". Some huge dude went full steam ahead and didn't slow down as he totally crashed into another dude and ended up slicing his superciliary arch wide open. Saw him outside and his face was covered in blood and he had a huge smile on his face, haha. Gotta love that, blood and smiles : )
Obituary, my most anticipated part of the night, delivered and then some. Song selection was awesome, they started their set with 'Redneck Stomp' as expected. What a way to start your gig! Excellent diversity in rythms throughout : plenty of mid-tempo chug, bouncy bro-hardcore, trash riffs, and snail-paced face melting sludgey moments. People went nuts in 'Slowly we Rot'.
Their classic guitar sound came through(the whole band sounded great) and they played air-tight. What more can I say? It's Obituary. They have a sound/formula that's just so good that it can't fail. Seeing them live made me realise just how incredibly well John Tardy's vocals fit in the mix. His vocals' pitch, compared to the guitar's pitch is just a match made in hell. Deliciously vile
Some extra note : it was the first time that this one security guy had experienced a metal gig(I heard him say so as he was handling tickets at the entrance). He was acting too funny, was basically looking at the scene with eyes as big as full moons, like a scientist analyzing a newly-discovered animal specie would look at them. Buddy got flabbergasted when he realized people in the pit were helping fallen ones get back up, and that tiny chicks were handling themselves just fine. Fuck off bud, we don't need you here
