No slowdown is exactly why you should play it~ PS1 R-Type II 2-ALL is one of the hardest non-bullet hell clears that I can think of aside from dumb shit like intentionally going to Image Fight loop 2 Penalty Area and then intentionally dying there and trying to recover with no autofire.

I've promised to do a Dangun Feveron No Miss clear five years ago and finally I did it. I was motivated by excellent clears of this game by PEG. One of my favourite Cave games and shmups in general. Speedkilling combined with discomen catching and very intense dodging just never gets boring and all that with funky music.
And while I'm not a highscore player at all I was interested to try No Miss with some scoring effort and at least don't lose any discomen. Practice went perfectly fine in that case (most of stage no misses are also full chain) and full runs with acceptable score potential are also two miss or game over. But then one particular full run happened when I lost exactly one discomen in stage 5 while still having no miss... and actually completing the whole game with kinda cursed score 9.9 mil. 10 mil was still definitely possible with better stages 2, 3 or 4 but I didn't expected to get no miss that quickly while still not having at least one miss clear. I guess I stopped to be nervous after losing one discomen because I really wanted to kill the run yet stayed focused.
So maybe another no miss next time but this run is already kinda cool to upload and I'm very happy. It's a hard game after all!

Dumb shit/ridiculous imposed runs like this will always be hardest for a dumb reason, when are we going to see R-Type II PS1 2-ALL no force no charge no autofire no slowdown clear? Anyone sane or skilled enough to do it? Probably you could tho I believe it!Steven wrote: ↑Mon Nov 25, 2024 8:20 am No slowdown is exactly why you should play it~ PS1 R-Type II 2-ALL is one of the hardest non-bullet hell clears that I can think of aside from dumb shit like intentionally going to Image Fight loop 2 Penalty Area and then intentionally dying there and trying to recover with no autofire.
Actually I've been trying RT2 on the PS1 port yesterday and while it's impressive they did the port through reverse engineering the PCB, there are lot of dumb things I've found (to name a few):
- Play field looks like it's zoomed in and the game looks claustrophobic as the result, to me this also affects the timing on my strat I used in the second part of 2-6. Oh and if you want to restore the black border HUD you'll be forced to play with vertical scrolling ala PCE RT1, feels too bizarre and alien!
- Sound FX is different and they sound way too annoying, especially when you equip the DNA shot it doesn't have the punchy feeling of the original and it's more akin to earrape-inducing. Really unfortunate since you'll need to use this weapon at all times for 1CC play.
- Built in Autofire is too low and I suspect it defaults to like 10 hz, you can no longer speedkill Rios with this fire rate and add that with no slowdown policy, and nothing dies in loop 2 so yeah good luck with that.
- The rotating pipes in st5 boss have accurate placement in loop 2 but it's not in loop 1 for whatever reason, you need to use different strats in loop 1.
Those dumb changes above is enough to make me drop it. I could do similar challenge in SHITTY MAME with max overclock ON and force the game in 60hz mode but with the original playfield and custom autofire. That being said I have to decline this offer and I don't really want to accept petty request like this anymore.

With ACA Cotton out today, I'm reminded of just how long it's been since I've played some of these ports. I'll always regard that era fondly, the first time consoles regularly got within touching distance of cabinets. It wouldn't surprise me if the best of that gen are truly difficult for experts to discern from the boards, at least mechanically. At the same time it never surprises me to hear of inaccuracies popping up here and there. I've long since learned to treat them as home arrange modes. Sometimes incredibly close, others not so much, a few wildly inaccurate.
(which can also be fun, especially where ShotTriggers or ACA have since stepped up! ala Fujino's Saturn Gun Frontier; the ~Aesthetic Ver~ for noob frens to enjoy the art style, and Hidetoshi Fukumori's peerlessly votive BGM.

Re: I DID IT! Share your latest 1CCs/other triumphs here...
I managed a no-miss 1cc run on Zero Wing's JPN Arcade version through the awesome Switch's M2 port. This took me nearly 25 hours after getting the 1cc on the Japanese Megadrive version on Normal mode. In my view, both games couldn't be further apart from each other.
I had no choice but to learn the whole game inside out and finish it without missing any lives since recovery on stage 4 onwards proved to be pretty much an impossible feat. Stage 4's boss became a a bit of a turning point, it took me SO much practice to find a strategy to consistently beat it, yet I still cannot make it through 100% of the time. Megadrive's version of that boss is an absolute pushover.
Stages 5 and 6 were surprisingly moderate in terms of difficulty once you get the hang of it but stage 7 is a real bitch from start to end. Stage 8 had a particular spot (the one where enemies show up from the back) that requires 100% precision and timing, but otherwise it's easier than many of the stages preceding it. Loop 2 is tough as nails and I cannot even get beyond stage 1 but by the time I reached it I no longer cared about it and TBH I just felt that a weight had been lifted off my shoulder.
I've spent way too much time on Zero Wing for the last couple of weeks but I'd say it deserves it, definitely not Toaplan's best but that OST is hard to beat, it really carries you throughout the whole game. Haven't had this much fun with a Toaplan game since I beat Batsugun.
PC Engine's version, though...I don't know what to make of it, it's a close call between "hate it" and "burn it".

I had the goal of 2all'ing the lovely, quirky*, and jank Sonic Wings 3 with Mao Mao, much like I did with her in Sonic Wings 1 earlier this year. I also wanted to have the first, non-TAS recorded 2all of it to show on youtube to show the way for anyone else who wanted to try the character out.
However over the weekend I somehow got two 2alls (my first two!) in the game, and the second one ended up beating the 15-year-old world record score listed for the game.
All things being equal, the phrase "I DID IT!" feels very apt

Another Darius, another 1CC. This time, the excellent Darius Gaiden. It took me around 25 hours of grinding and it was worth every second. It's just a shame that I died like an idiot in the final stage, otherwise it could have been a no miss as well.

Re: I DID IT! Share your latest 1CCs/other triumphs here...
Well done, everyone. I finally landed a 1-CC of DonPachi with the type B, but US version. The JP version will require me a little bit more time. I bought a new PC, finally, so I can emulate dozens of games I own but are at 14 hours of plane away. So, I obtained (again) a 1-CC in Giga Wing 2, Border Down (6a), and Cannon Spike (1-ALL), and...Karous easy mode, with my copy of the game still unwrapped from 2007 (extremely long story...). I admit being on the verge of tears when I played again Border Down: those who were posting on this board before 2005 may have an idea about why. For Cannon Spike, I am tempted to push for a 2-ALL but I actually obtained it a long time ago (or, even, a few lives ago: 2002?), and Psikyo loops...well, you know them (but this one's easy, by their standards). I am half tempted to start going through my backlog of "Cave Games that I own but I have not even unwrapped", but there is no hurry whatsoever, I guess.

Whoa, including the TLB / loop 2? Congrats, that's amazing!
Re: I DID IT! Share your latest 1CCs/other triumphs here...
Roo, you mean DP? Well, the US version is [insert here the usual rant]. Small zinger, although you of course know that I am writing it for your own good and because I enjoy dishing out tough love (ah!). If you would practice the game instead of spending hours on futile activities such as non-shmup games, working, sleeping, eating and so on, you would also easily obtain this result. What is more important to you?! Oxygen or the DP 1-CC?!
If you mean Cannon Spike, it was in 2002 or so. The game does not have any revenge/suicide bullets, but all attacks are quite faster and do 50% more damage. This however means that a player who has tight routes for the first loop should be able to clear the second loop once they get used to the faster speed. It does help that I used Mega Man, the most powerful and "secret" character in the game (in the DC version, you just need to move to the left of Charlie to select him). Fun arena shooter game that makes me wish the whole genre could magically become popular again and attract the attention of decent developers (eh, daydreaming again...).
I believe that I may move to other non-looping Cave games and 2000s shmups, but maybe I will just focus on the games I plan to write squibs about, for some time. I am trying to avoid playing multiple games that take 30+ minutes to 1-CC, as I have lower energy levels in winter (and, besides, I suddenly have an irrationally long backlog...). An R-gray 02 1-CC of Raystorm might still be tempting, as this is a game I really like to play again but during Winter, for a lot of personal reasons (including the absolutely silly "I believe in seasonal atmosphere", of course

Got a No Death/1-ALL in R Type III last week. Nothing crazy but it felt good. Definitely an underrated console shmup. I really wanna try Super R-Type soon since it's so easy to remove slowdown through overclocking these days. I really think the SNES deserves a second look from the shmup community since slowdown can be easily circumvented now. While it'll never reach the heights of the Genesis or PC Engine, it had some very solid games. I also think overclocking Parodius Da! might be worthwhile since the Arcade version is so brutal and the overclocked SNES version might be a very solid game in its own right.
This year in general was full of personal triumphs for me and I managed to clear stuff I had only passively messed around with over the years including DoDonPachi. Learning DDP over the course of 6 months in small bites absolutely leveled me up as a player.

It's been a damn good year overall. I'll probably clear Out Zone as well in a few days.

Nice clears.
For an R-Type game, R-Type III isn't too difficult and then the game hits you with Stage 4. By far the hardest part of the game, and quite possibly the most difficult section of any R-Type game in general (on the first loop atleast). I have a real love/hate relationship with that level. Maddening, but memorable in all it's bullshit glory.

Yep stage 4 is pretty much memorizer hell. Especially the backwards part. It’s not terrible but it demands a bit of save state practice. The last level is also a bit tricky but manageable as long as you can hold on to the right weapon.

Recovery is possible on that section, the main key is to use Hyper + spinning bits to clear out the wall turrets. Can't imagine how players back in the day figure out the safe spots on that POS without savestate practice, it's even more batshit insane in the loops.

Pretty proud of getting a 1CC in Tatsujin on PC Engine yesterday. I was on track to get a no-miss but died somehow on the last boss, lol.
It’s interesting to hear discussion about difficulty - I usually target easier shmups since I’m still a novice, yet I found this game very manageable (whereas Coryoon which people seem to say even a 4 year old can beat got frustrating in the final boss rush). Tatsujin is much better designed though and never feels unfair.
Any other recommendations for 16-bit shmups? I’ve beaten the two mentioned and Blazing Lazers. I’ve tried Gate of Thunder but not having CD save states on Everdrive hurts.

Nice! I love a good 16 bit shmup. On PC Engine, my favorite is Sapphire, though it is on the harder side of console shmupping. Amazing game with killer production values. It doesn’t look like it, but it’s almost like a vertical memorizer.nitman99 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 31, 2024 4:40 pm Pretty proud of getting a 1CC in Tatsujin on PC Engine yesterday. Otherwise, Soldier Blade is very good, it’s like an improved Blazing Lazers.
Spriggan is super good too. One of the few games I’ve gone back to 1CC multiple times, just because I liked the game so much.
And I’d probably recommend Super Star Soldier, too. I am a bit more mixed on this one since it’s got some unfair design and you can actually power down enough to not be able to kill the final boss, but when that game is cooking, it’s really cooking. Best graphics and music on a hu-card, imo.

Re: I DID IT! Share your latest 1CCs/other triumphs here...
Thanks to a helpful video from Steven I was able to get the clear in R-Type Final 3 Evolved last night.
In the R-Type Final games you have a "hanger" of 12 ships that you can take with you for the campaign. I chose to focus on the Leo 2, Eclipse, and Ragnarok II.
My plan of attack was to use the following ships on specific stages:
Stage 1: Leo 2
Stage 2: Eclipse
Stage 3: Eclipse
Stage 4: Leo 2
Stage 5: Eclipse
Stage 6: Ragnarok II
Stage 7: Leo 2
While certain sections were still a little bit dicey, I knew I could get through it if things went my way. Things were going great until just before Stage 4, when I accidentally picked the Ragnarok II by mistake. You see, Stage 4 is one of those memorizer stages with a bunch of shit coming from behind you. The ceiling and floor can compress and kill you. There's fast firing enemy lasers. Sometimes all those things happen at the same time. It's a real bastard of a stage. The Leo 2 can deal with it with enough practice, but I'd never tried the Ragnarok II on that stage. So I had to figure out a different weapon setup for that particular challenge. Lost a couple lives, but luckily I was able to figure out the recovery.
There were some other unfortunate things that happened on this run. I didn't launch the force pod correctly against the Stage 5 boss, which nearly got me killed.
The stage 6 boss is quite challenging, though with practice I was able to just blow it away with the Ragnarok II's cannon
Despite a couple of close calls, I got good RNG on the final boss' attack patterns (the only RNG element in the game that I know of). When it's meant to be, it will be, I guess.
Final stats:
Time from first sortie to 1CC: 15:22:05.
Number of Bydo defeated: 37,136
Number of shots blocked with the force pod or a bit: 1,977
Number of sorties: 541
High Score: 945,860.
With that, I am now back to having 1CC'd every game in the R-Type series.
Granzella, next time, try to do a more sane release strategy, okay?

That's insane, may I ask how many hours you've put into 1cc'ing PCE's Tatsujin? It's widely considered to be more difficult than Megadrive's version, which kicks my ass and I cannot make it past stage 2...I'm not a fan of this series though.nitman99 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 31, 2024 4:40 pm Pretty proud of getting a 1CC in Tatsujin on PC Engine yesterday. I'd say PCE's Tatsujin is way above easy range in shmupping

And yes Coryoon is one of those shmups where the difficult thing is NOT to finish it, it's sits side by side with Final Soldier or Star Parodier amongst the PCE shmups you can 1cc in your first play through.

Heck yeah, I've been digging into PC Engine shmups lately. I just completed a 1CC of Psychic Storm, and *nearly* got there on Gunhed, but one of the minibosses on Stage 9 drained all the lives I had stockpiled. To Far Away Times wrote: ↑Tue Dec 31, 2024 8:32 pmNice!

Finally got the 1CC in DDP DOJ BL (1-ALL, B-EX) yesterday, ~82mil, M2 PS4 port using a Hori Fighting Stick Alpha. Took around 90 hours over the course of 8 months.
Was my first proper shooter. I had been peripherally aware of the genre and dabbled in Ikaruga and Raiden for around 20 hours many years ago, but never knew about Cave games until a friend purchased a MiSTer FPGA device and showed me some DoDonPachi. I was instantly hooked and picked up all the M2 ports.
It's a very scrubby 1CC, but as a beginner it really felt good. I'm convinced the hyper system is one of the greatest mechanics in the history of the genre. Deceptively simple but very deep.
Happy New Year to all, and here's hoping for more M2 ports!

My second 1CC of Cho Ren Sha 68K. This time around I got a bit farther into the second cycle, ending at the third boss.

Nice, DOJ's a pretty challenging game any way you slice it. You're no scrub or beginner if you can clear it.giga222 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 12, 2025 11:28 pm Finally got the 1CC in DDP DOJ BL (1-ALL, B-EX) yesterday, ~82mil, M2 PS4 port using a Hori Fighting Stick Alpha. Thanks! I might try to push it a little further as there are some low-hanging fruit I didn't attempt for safety or just plain screwed up:mycophobia wrote: ↑Mon Jan 13, 2025 12:55 am
well done soldier. gonna push it further or hop to something else?
1. A "proper" Stage 1 boss kill with hyper and 2 x hyper drops. At the moment I just get the 1 hyper drop and call it a day.
2.Stage 2 I missed out on the x2 bee bonus at the end of the hyper corridor as I dropped my combo a few frames before picking them up, missing out on about 6-8M points.
3. Stage 4 boss hyper trick with the tri-disc pattern. There's about 10-14M points there alone, but I didn't attempt and just bombed as the rings collapsed inwards. Pattern 3 of that boss is challenging!
4. Stage 5A and 5B I had combo drops despite routing them heavily. The honeycomb section in particular I spent a lot of time chaining only to completely fudge it in the run, haha.
But I might take a break for something easier. I hear Deathsmiles I & II is a good place to start.
Thanks!To Far Away Times wrote: ↑Mon Jan 13, 2025 2:36 am

Thanks! I split my time between an Anbernic RG Cube and an actual Turbo Duo, so I don’t have an official readout - probably 15-20 hours. I’d like to 1CC the arcade version now but I’d have to relearn boss patterns since it doesn’t translate 1:1 with the PCE. I’ll get around to it eventually.locoBro1196 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 11, 2025 10:56 am That's insane, may I ask how many hours you've put into 1cc'ing PCE's Tatsujin? It's widely considered to be more difficult than Megadrive's version, which kicks my ass and I cannot make it past stage 2...I'm not a fan of this series though.
I'd say PCE's Tatsujin is way above easy range in shmuppingso congrats.
And yes Coryoon is one of those shmups where the difficult thing is NOT to finish it, it's sits side by side with Final Soldier or Star Parodier amongst the PCE shmups you can 1cc in your first play through.
