DW:

Not a 1-CC, but timely reminder of what I struggle with, in shmups: arc- or circular-like attacks sometimes just jam my ability to judge bullets' speed and direction. Yesterday I fumbled an an otherwise great right run in DonPachi due to an arc-patterned attack on 2-5 (my brain literally refused to "parse" it). Psikyo games often include plenty of arc-like/rotating attacks, among other things (or: kryptonite-like design style, for me).

Re: interview. I believe that the two interviews-merged-into-one feature a bit of weaselling: Niitani sounds ambiguous on purpose ("everyone is grey but our shade of grey is the right one", if I can use a metaphor), more than anything else. Anyway, a thread on this topic might just go nowhere, but "we are all on the road to nowhere" to cite The Talking Heads

New to the forums, been obsessed with shmups since I discovered them about a year ago. I’m pretty much a console only gamer and I’ve started a solid collection of shmups over many consoles, especially Sega Saturn. I just got my first 1cc on the Saturn port of Darius Gaiden with auto fire turned off. Fantastic game, I absolutely love the psychedelic atmosphere of the game, not sure if I’m traveling through space, the ocean, dreaming, or tripping. 1cc didn’t seem too difficult, just took the survival route and memorized the stages fairly well. I did a 1cc with the auto fire turned on pretty quickly but it seemed a bit too easy to be considered a genuine 1cc. Can call myself a real shmup player now, thinking about which to attempt next.

1CCed SMS Aleste on the Switch collection. The game itself is a dead-easy cruise if you stick with weapon 1...at least until you get shot; it has one of the most brutal recoveries I can think of in a game. You simply don't have the shot output to keep up with the spam mobs the game constantly drowns you in at higher rank. I'd played it plenty of times on & off over the years since the collection came out and no-missed each segment in the challenge mode, but never stitched a run all the way through without disaster striking. And since the game's fairly long it wasn't conducive to just grinding until I got it. On the winning run I no-missed through to the final stage, took a hit from something I never saw, then burned right through a dozen lives. Mercifully the final boss is fairly harmless, you just can't hit it back until you've gotten enough powerups to push through its shots. I must have been holding my ground for 5 minutes before I collected enough capsules to power through the deluge.

All in all I think the game's a definite audiovisual technical showcase for the hardware, but the lack of balance and repetitive backgrounds & enemy formations mean Power Strike II, the Fantasy Zones & R-Type (and maybe Sagaia? Never played that version but I loved it on MD) beat it out in terms of SMS shmups imo. Still lots to like about it though, absolutely no idea why Sega only sold it through mail order (with a monochrome cover no less) in North America when it was much more impressive than some of the things they were putting on shelves back then.

Can't go wrong with more Darius, I & II or G. If you dig horizontal shmups from the era, the Thunder Force series is another excellent mid-tier difficulty series to transition into, especially III/AC & IV. And then of course there's Compile & Hudson! Or Cave, Psikyo, Raizing, Irem & Konami if you want to challenge the tougher stuff.

Just managed the 1cc on Salamander Expert mode in the PC Engine version. What an amazing game, actually I disliked it at first as I could barely scrape through the 1st stage, it took me SO many tries to make it to 2nd stage on a regular basis. I had to give it several runs and many hours of practice, mainly on the following points:

- Stage 1 very last part with the regenerating walls and the final boss
- Stage 3's fire flames. Absolutely the worst part of the game for me. It's impossible to get through these unless the pattern of the flames is memorized with 100% accuracy
- Stage 4's wall hit collision detection issues...
- Stage 5's part right before the final boss with the small ships that appear out of nowhere, good luck if you are getting to this point without any power-ups
- Stage 6's colorful balls shower at the beginning of the stage, falling Moai heads, and the final escape which also needs to be 100% memorized with zero room for errors

Overall I loved it and it deserves its spot as one of the most highly praised shmups in the machine. I will give a shot to the arcade version next but PCE version has really raised the bar.

Wait, really? I was playing this a little while back and hated weapon 1. Game was fun when I had a good run getting to use a weapon I liked, but that would always end when the game forced me back to weapon 1 (when there was no upgrade item on screen, so I had no idea what caused me to switch back to the default weapon).

So I thought the game was terribly glitched because the problem occured even in Kaiteki mode, always in the same spots.

This was my experience with the game too. It's fun, but in a brutal kind of way. You'll likely get a no miss clear when you 1CC the game because a death at any point in the run is incredibly hard to recover from.

Subweapons have limited ammo, if you run out you'll default back to weapon 1, that's probably what was happening. That's okay because weapon 1 has two big advantages: it never runs out, and after being powered up to level 3 or so it destroys enemy bullets. Combine the fact that it shoots in any direction and can take out the enemies who constantly spawn from the sides and you can plow through the whole game with it. The only trouble is losing your power level if you die.

I did read the manual when I first played it some months back. No idea how I managed to forget about that crucial fact. Thanks! Guess I'll give the game another shot after Gradius II.

Cleared the first loop of DoDonPachi about a week ago while on my lunch break which was cool. The first time I tried to record it I only got audio since my settings were messed up in OBS  That was frustrating.

I've mostly stuck to console shmups so dipping my toe in the big leagues was humbling. Ironically I actually feel like MORE of a noob after clearing it because I gained a deeper understanding of my weaknesses and a greater appreciation for people who have spent hundreds of hours to score well and clear the second loop.

I legit had that happen with my first strikers 1945 ii 2-all. Then the second one desynched. Took me 3 times to actually get a 2all run on tape. A least you can say it's not a fluke.

That is one thing I love about M2 ports and some modern stuff like Eschatos is that they have a built in replay feature. It takes a fairly significant amount of mental pressure off just knowing I for sure will have a recording if I get the clear. Every I hit record there's this mental strain of "oh gee I hope this is the run," whereas with built in replays I can just relax and play with a more casual mindset and if I get it, I get it. Probably one of the few and biggest advantages that good ports have over modern emulation now that I think about it.

Not a huge achievement, but it's a first step.
Next is the Arrange S, then L, then EX, then the real Arcade.

First step's still a step, Lem!
I picked up Rin Tin Tinsei when I first started lurking here in earnest, and got very demotivated at being bodied by the easy mode.
Consistent til the fourth stage, one or two drops thereafter - and always sitting on 6-8 credits by the time the boss dropped off the perch :(
Gotta get back into it.

It wasn't that hard to No Miss 1CC on Super Easy Mode, and I used Exy, so very few auto-bombs (I usually don't use them except for the last boss fight, this in every shmups, so Exy is perfect).
Now I'm trying Arrange S 1CC, I love how it basically says "learn those damn patterns! There's no Panic Button (no bombs) here" and even if the patterns are just a skeleton of the real pattern, the speed has increased, I feel like it's the best testing ground for the game.
I was about to 1CC Arrange L on my first try...
while Arrange EX seems hard, and I don't know if I should put it last since it's basically Loop-2 or before White/Black Label.

With Ketsui I'm close to No Miss 1CC Super Easy Mode...I also tried Deathtiny mode, are the patterns those of Loop-2 or not? because they seem absurdly dense and designed to abuse the new mechanic.
Although I'm currently focusing on extends and scoring. It's hard to ALWAYS keep track of all the times you can max out Chip-5s, sometimes I forget in the name of survival.

I just got an out-of-the-blue DOJ Tamashii 1-ALL! Kinda in disbelief right now since it's been eluding me for months. I'd almost given up on Tamashii and BL, but a quick switch to A-L after a credit-fed run showed me its strengths helped a lot. It only took one try after the switch!

Lots of stupid mistakes during the levels (2 for Boss 2, 2 for Boss 3, 1 at the beginning of Stage 4, 2 for Koyruy stage 1, 0 for the second stage, 2 for Hibachi).

The scores will probably be extremely low.
Is there a way to export the replay? or only via PS?

Darius II

Post by lpslucasps »

Today I 1CC'd Darius II - the arcade triple screen version. That took me about 18 hours of grinding. A truly beautiful, fun and well-made son-of-a-gun of a game. Jesus, why's this game so unforgivable? Recovering from death is nigh-impossible, you may as well just reset your every time you die. Well, at least the finall boss from the Z stage is quite easy even with your basic shot, so dying on the final stage is salvageable.

Here's the video: https://youtu.be/z3XA6x4WD18?si=qLfMNuHF3-aaS7nA

Anyways, I heard the 2 screen version is somewhat easier. I did try it and some minibosses and bosses are, indeed, easier to bring down on it. Probably because you can shoot a bit faster, since your bullets will get out of the screen faster. But I don't think I have the stamina to try 1CC'ing that version too. All my strategies take into account the extra space from the triple screen version, so I'd have to adapt and relearn a bunch of stuff. I may try Sagaia, though, that seems to be a cool arrange mode of sorts.

Got my first 1CC of anything in the last six months or so. After I got my 200th shmup 1CC back in April I decided I wouldn't chase 1CC's anymore, but if a game piques my interest I'll play it.

Last week I had a chance to play Touhou Scarlet Diabolique Fantastica on an exA machine and I was really enamored by it. The game is a modified port of Touhou Fantastic Danmaku Festival with changes to a few boss bullet patterns and it also gives the player less resources. I, along with a handful of others, played the game for hours at the arcade taking turns after every game over. A few of us got up to stage 5. It was really cool to play the game for the first time, and also, play it with a community of people who were also into it. We were rooting and cheering for each other, it was a really cool experience.

That kick started my interest in playing Touhou Fantastic Danmaku Festival since it's very close to the arcade version. Not a terribly difficult game in either it's arcade or home iterations, but a fun one, nonetheless. I got the clear in Fantastic Danmaku Festival with Patchouli, who is something of a gimmick character. She has a very weak and narrow forward shot, but a very powerful spread attack that is done by charging your shot, and not unlike something you might find in an R-Type game. This type of mechanic works surprisingly well in a vertical bullet hell game. It made the game feel very fresh, and shooting felt more important than just holding down a button like in every other bullet hell game. Though I will say I couldn't dedicate 100% of my focus solely on dodging which did cause a few deaths. Turns out there is room for shooting and dodging in bullet hell games.

Got the clear in Fantastic Danmaku Festival 2. This time I used Marisa. Very similar to the first game, although this one deviates more from it's source material. Music is better here, and the final boss pattern is quite nice, though a few of the Stage 5 patterns weren't really to my liking. Visuals are a little better here, but sometimes get a bit busy compared to the first game.

Overall, I like the first game a little better, but this one is solid too.

I had a hard time finding it at first too. Steam sucks at aggregating shmups. It might be the moon runes at the beginning of the title that throws it off.

Here’s the link that worked for me.

Sagaia

Another 1CC! This time it's for Sagaia, the international version of Darius II. It's a significantly different game, in a good way. It's almost a mix of an arrange and turbo mode, with shorter but harder stages and bosses with less HP. It's a bit easier, but it's still Darius-level bullshit.

Got the obligatory 1CC in Devil Blade Reboot. No deaths, and I ended with 6 shields/bombs in stock.

What a cool game though. Really impressive production values and there’s a few design choices I really admire. Seeing warning trails before bullets are shot or enemies sweep in is really cool. It not only gives the player a heads up, but it makes the game look harder than it is and clogs the screen up with hazards. Devil Blade Reboot can be quite frantic at times. It’s not hard, but it does require the player to be active. But despite the lack of challenge, Devil blade Reboot has very good game design fundamentals and you can tell the developer has a deep understanding of the genre. Although the game is definitely going for a 32-Bit Saturn/PS1 vibe, it really isn’t derivative of anything I can think of. Even the two way shot toggle feels unique, with both weapons being viable and I was frequently swapping between them. The easy call would have been to do focused movement to change the shot type like every other shmup, but by not doing that, (and not even having a focused mode at all), really makes this game feel pretty different. It’s not a DDP clone, it’s not a Touhou style game, etc. It really feels like its own thing with its own identity.

I do wish it was a bit harder though so there was more of a sense of accomplishment in finishing it. I know this game is skewing pretty casual but I don’t really want to blindly no miss clear it with a ton of shields, ya know? Feels like a theme park ride almost. Even being as difficult as Graze Counter (the original, not the GM version), Blue Wish Resurrection, or one of the easier Darius Burst routes would have gone a long ways towards keeping things very casual but giving you just a little bit of adversity to overcome.
