KoopaTGR - Super Cobra - P1 - 2 - 4,140

I wish I knew this game better :( I guess it wasn't a good idea to play this on a new keyboard with an unfamiliar key layout.
Also I wish that I beat Vimana again for the tournament.

Looks like I'll have to raise my expectations as I'm on my last life.

Damn...

Only 4 out of 12 passed this one. I totally failed it myself while testing it. I expected it to be a lot easier than it was since I find Scramble easy and they are essentially the same thing. Un-telegraphed cheap shots don't mix well with DR it would seem.

Since everyone is finished up I'll roll the next one a little early when I get home from work in a few hours. I think we might be nearing the endgame here...
chum wrote:If Death Roulette had a rank system I'd be in deep shit
No Refuge does actually have a very basic rank system in place, but it's determined by the performance of the overall group rather than individual players. NR was intended to be a somewhat more cooperative concept, to see how long we as a group could keep it running before dying out.

I'd like to continue running special DR events every 8 Loops or so if people enjoy this enough to participate. I think my next one will use an individual rank system as the base concept. Stay tuned

Dying at the very end of the stage 2 boss barrage was sad. 2-2 is usually the problem for me, not 1-2 lol. This tournament was fun though!

Well that's great. That's just FUCKING great.

Illyrian - FAIL

I am eliminated.

Here's what happened. I got to the volcano on the first level. I had like 3-4 options so I figured I'd create a safe cocoon for myself with my options so i could survive. This worked fine until a single rock flew through ALL MY OPTIONS FIRING and hit me. Then I had the joy of trying to recover in a Gradius game. That was exciting. Then finally after I got past the volcano the retarded hitbox on the bullets the boss fired killed me even though I was about 5 miles away from it.

I have a new saying:
There are shit shmups, and then there's the original Gradius.

Can we play Super Cobra again next?

Bitching aside, many thanks to ACSeraph for taking the time to organize this. It is greatly appreciated.

Recovery in Gradius 1 is super easy on almost every checkpoint, and none of them are remotely impossible.

I don't know I've 1cc-ed it and I still think recovery is a total bitch in it. It's only easy relative to other games in the series imo, there are quite a lot of hellishly bad times to die, like anywhere on the Moai stage for example.
Illyrian wrote:There are shit shmups, and then there's the original Gradius.
It's frustrating when you are first learning it, but it's a really excellent game once you learn how to get around in it.

Here are the most played games i have on shmupmame 2.2.

These are all good games.
Edit: Except Gemini Wing. I tried hard to like it and score well for your tournament last year though.

Have to agree with trap15 here. Recovery on the moai stage is fairly easy: shoot the ones that are faced towards you and hide behind the ones that look away from you. It's pretty trivial to scurry from one safe spot to the next. The only places I find to be difficult to recover from are the end of 1-4 and the beginning/middle of the final stage, other than that it's mostly simple. Higher loop recovery is a different story altogether, haven't been able to do anything worthwhile regarding that.

I will admit that I enjoy all the outrage from skilled players over something as innocently playful as the first Gradius, however.

Have to disagree, after the end of moai stage is still hard to recover and yes it's instant game over for me unless you're mention Nemesis one.

Tips for me, this game also has rank system. Make sure you're suiciding in the end of stage 2 to low the rank and have at least 2 options and not picking shield if you want survive until mid-stage 4 and after that full your powerups!

Alright, you guys inspired me to do a Death Roulette as well: pop in a single credit and get through both checkpoints within the moai stage. I openly confess that I screwed up twice, but it further exemplifies the general idea (video; just skip to 4:52 for the recovery section). And as much as I would like to claim amazing skills, I think it becomes obvious just by watching the video that it's really not too difficult to zip through this stage, otherwise a mediocre player such as myself would not be able to do it. As I said before, there are some tougher checkpoints and higher loops will destroy unaware players, but even then it's possible, albeit unlikely; here I manage to get back on my feet after dying in a really bad spot in 3-1, and I did not even practice the third loop beforehand (granted, this recovery doesn't last long, but still!). Gradius III has a bunch of vicious checkpoints (the SFC version on the other hand allows for consistent recovery even on the second loop), the first one not so much.
