What's the deal with the red lasers that bosses fire?

I know they kill you, but how many times can you be hit by them before that happens, or how does it work basically?

Lasers do nothing to you in ninja mode. In ship mode, you'll see fractions of your current life disappear each hit you take.

IIRC getting hit by them also fills up your "ninja meter" a little bit, so it's possible to exploit them in certain spots, especially if you're almost to the next extend, since passing that point refills any "half-depleted" sections of your life bar. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this).

I think you're right on both counts. I've used them to recharge quickly and shield away a wall of bullets that I didn't like the look of.

I just got to 46Mil after stage 3 bonuses on an experimental run that I though would probably end in tears. I think I understand how ninja mode, shield and rapid fire works now.

I definitely prefer this to Futari :P

ooh, 66Mil and onto stage 5 once. Getting to stage 4 more regularly now that I'm getting used to it and always making sure I've got a bit of energy in case of an emergency.

Last two bosses look horrific though :?

Arcade is more than hard enough to clear.

If I need a reminder about stupid difficulty I'll go back to Futari.

Oh god Dr trouserplank is in this thread, prepare for whining about ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING!

Incidentally futari original mode is impossible to clear, even with 4 lives left for larsa.

True story.

Someone confine DrTrouserPlank to the Hi Score forum, for his own good.
I haven't actively browsed/used this forum in many years and it's no longer an accurate representation of me.

I have retired from genre-specific content creation after 13 years, but I'll always love this little genre in my own personal way.

Man, Zetsu mode is totally amazingly fun...

except for the bosses. Holy God, these must be my least favorite boss battles in Cave history. They're so long and so damned boring. I like playing as type C, but often find myself playing A since they seem to take bosses down fastest. Ugh. Does anybody like these bosses? Is there something I'm missing? They're so long-winded and dull.

The only boss I have a problem with is stage 5's (Zetsu/Shin), because she has waaaaay too much health and she doesn't really have any high scoring patterns to cash in on. The rest of the bosses are fun if you try to get as many points out of them as possible though.

Some dude told me that Rising Star confirmed that the PAL release of this will play on US consoles just like DFK, is there a source?

I've been searching but haven't found anything. It just may be some unfounded rumor but, I'm really hoping that this one is true!

I left them a message in their facebook page asking about the region(s) of the game and this what they answered:

"Thanks for your kind comments. I can't confirm the region(s) of Akai Katana yet - we'll know more next year."

Looks like they are still negotiating the details.

I'm back to playing this, would like to beat each mode with all three ships. It's sooo enjoyable, I like all three modes, but I am partial to Zetsu. I was playing co-op with a friend and we kept dying from bullets being reflected at each other, maybe not the best shmup for co-op, but rather funny nonetheless.

Would be a shame if US360 owners were SOL with the EU region port.

I like all three modes as well, which is why I think this is one of Cave's best games. Every mode is worth playing and learning, but I think I'd rank them as Shin > Zetsu > Arcade. I actually didn't like Shin at all when I first played it, but it's very satisfying to learn and hard to play for score (SIN's WR replay is incredible). It's awesome.

I think Zetsu is the best of the three by a good bit. Shin is a little bit too fiddly.

I like the idea of controlling the game by yelling:

"LASER, LASER, FIRE, NIIIIINJA, NO MORE NINJA, LASER, FIRE, UP, UP, UP, LESS DYING, KILL THE BOSS!" etc.

Sounds like that Japan-only DS beatemup game where you jump by shouting "JUMP," etcetera.
