Went to the Osaka games festa today (like a mini-TGS). Stopped by the MS booth where BLEX and Ketsui were available to play.
Took video of a scrubby guy getting through the first level of Ketsui. Judge for yourself.

I also chatted with the 5pb rep again and he told me that the reason Ketsui EX has been delayed were concerns about the accuracy of the port. So yes it looks like they will take their time with it.

That's the first time I've seen footage of Ketsui. The port seems nice, but it was hard on this first glance to see what all the Ketsui fuss is about. Kinda looked like a lot of other Cave games. Not a bad thing, but I guess I was expecting something a bit different. Probably the scoring system is distinctive?

I must point you on Ketsui review from insomnia.ac for a good reading then

I always wondered what the fuss was about too as I've never played the coin-op. However, having now played the DS version, I'm looking forward to the 360 port a lot more now. The simple scoring mechanic is quite addictive (the closer you are to the enemies when you destroy them, the bigger score chips you get).

I don't want to sound like the stereotypical arcade pcb owning snob, but you seriously can't compare the Ketsui PCB to the DS version.
Perhaps the extra stage, but since you mostly fight bosses you just don't get that exciting kamikaze feeling you have when playing the real deal.
Always risk your life for the fucking 5-boxes!
If you don't play this game with always point-blanking the enemies, it just is a regular shooter.
Personally, i wouldn't say Ketsui deserves all of it's "1200$ for a kit" hype, but it sure is a great game.

No, I was not comparing the PCB with the DS version. However, the method of scoring is similar enough for me to derive that that particular element is what makes the game interesting. It's an interesting risk/reward mechanism.

Here's a video that illustrates that "point-blanking" kamikaze-style of playing

Well, it is perhaps the best scoring system Cave has put out so far (the one that makes the most sense, anyway). Other distinctive factors include patterns that are both interesting and challenging, and a sensible TLB.

I was lucky enough to play the coin-op when it was out in Japan (not knowing wtf the game was either) and thinking it was amazing.
Cos it was all in JP, I had to search for ages when I got home to try to find out the name of the game, but back in mid 03 there wasn't too much info so I dropped it.

Then, we were lucky enough for shmups member ill6 to donate it to our local arcade in London, and it all came flooding back.

It's difficult to explain Ketsui - it's bombastic and in your face, right through to the way the bosses come in to a sweet drum n bass beat. I'd say it gives you the same thrills as Daioujou, but it's not quite as punishing so early on, and the scoring system is tons a fun. Everything about it feels just...spot on.

I love it to bits. I'd kill for the PCB, and just looking at the vid of that port makes me want it back even more.

ill6 - please put it back for Christmas!!

Pretty sure that would be Dangun Feveron :P It doesn't get much simpler than "don't let the little guys get away!"

Ketsui is the reason i still play shmups. Cant wait for this xbox 360 port. It will be a DREAM come true for those who invested in the failed project of "emulating" Ketsui pcb
The cave whore count in this thread is unbelievable!!!

The proper scoring strategy looks a lot like Dangun Feveron, except multiplier items collect themselves for you. Interesting. Better than chaining, I guess.

I wouldn't call it a failure. There's no doubt in my mind that one day it will be emulated.

Dangun Feveron minus the "shoot this right as it appears on the screen!" and "miss one item and you're fucked!" parts? :)

SO what? I mean... cant somebody think a game is a great game and at the same time not fully appreciate its dynamics compared to other games ones?

Shaky camcorder vids of someone playing the game pretty messy uploaded on YouTube certainly will give you a lot less glamorous presentation of it. The game is out for six years now, and there´s a lot of very good superplays avaiable online that showcase this game A LOT better.

Hell, even the French shmup documentary show more decent footage of it. Granted, it's nothing compared to the superplays you're mentioning. There is a month old (IIRC) one by SWY, too. Very impressive.

Head over to superplay and download the imakichi's replay. If that doesn't make you excited to play the game, I don't think anything will.
Feedback will set you free.

I must have watched that superplay about fifty times before I bought the pcb. It got me totally stoked each time - such a good game.

There's new site for DDPDOJBLEX up, but it's still rather empty.
