Xexyz wrote:Wait, Sonic Wings has tate and high-score saving? Anyone else have this game and figured out how to access these options? Whenever I play, it goes straight to the game and I haven't found a button combo for accessing any options.
Coulda' just asked me directly. ;) Any time after the Video Systems logo is shown on screen, press L1 and R1 simultaneously. The menus go something like this:

1) Return to game
2) Options
2.1) Difficulty
2.2) Lives
2.3) Tate
2.4) Save
2.5) Load
2.6) Exit
3) Reset

I imagine it's the same basic idea in all Oretachi games, but Sonic Wings is my only one so I can't confirm.

Not really, unless your idea of Turrican is a hori-scrolling shooter from left to right - in which case, Contra does it better.
Xain'd Sleena is a multi-way scroller as is Turrican. Of course Turrican had huger maps...
From my own experience of the game (I didn't complete it though) the sections are mostly straightforward left-to-right.

Thanks Ghegs! Although to be honest, after posting my question I logged off, wen't straight to my PS2 and popped in Sonic Wings. I screwed around with button presses and found out it was R1 & L1 together (origionally thought it was L1 & L2 & R1 & R2 on my first successful triggering). That definately makes things better, although there's no auto fire option... not that I really mind tapping the circle button repeatedly.

Thunder Force wrote:I guess nobody is 100% certain what deals Hamster has access to, so potentially anything that's obscure and unported could be fair game. Maybe they can look into getting it in the future.

So I just submitted individual write-in votes for a hitlist of shmup ports that need to happen:

Dangun Feveron
Armed Police Batrider
Battle Bakraid
Raiden Fighters
Raiden Fighters 2
Raiden Fighters Jet
Viper Phase One
19XX War Against Destiny
Tatsujin 2 (Tatsujin Oh)
G-Stream

Then I voted for Xexex from the checkboxes.

I also threw in a few more likely, old coin-op titles that would be cool and might be cheap for them to aquire rights to:

Xain'd Sleena
Robocop
Heavy Barrel
Bad Dudes vs. Dragon Ninja
Dragon Breed

If you want these too, vote for them.

(solicited online feedback like this does produce results sometimes, as those of us who voted on Sega's site for them to make a Shadow The Hedgehog spin-off game a few years ago can attest.)
Awesome list!

I voted for several of the choices as well as putting a few of my own in. Also, I agree 100% with Heavy Barrel, if and only if, they use both analog sticks for control (i.e. left for movement, right for fire direction) & the R1 & R2 buttons for fire/grenades. That would be the perfect control scheme. If they did that, they could also do Gondomania, or Ikari Warriors (any of the 3 really). Man, I'd be in classic arcade heaven...

On the next shmup release: Rebio (sic?) Lepus is quite a fun game, with a number of interesting and original ideas. It should be the first design work of Shin Nakamura, the main programmer behind Psikyo titles. As an hori and as an '80s title, it is pretty manic and fast, so it's easily appreciable by people with a more refined taste. I find that it has aged well also from a graphical point of view, to be frank. Difficulty was quite high, for its time, and there's even an "hard" mode. In short, given the price, it's a great purchase ( especially if they can behave with interlacing and whatnot :x ).

They should hurry up wih the Xexex conversion already, the game has been screaming out for a port for over a decade now. As long as they don't mangle the conversion in some way, it could be a great treat for retro shmup fiends who don't want to fork out for a fragile board, or play slightly glitchy emulation.

I don't think Raizing games count as old-school, at least, not as old as some of the previous Hamster releases. Would be nice to see one or two of them find their way to the PS2 though.

Wha!? You implying non-manic horizontals are not as "refined"?

I just saw that Pooyan is coming out May 25. It's sort of a shooter, but too original to be called a shmup.

Whooo, freudian slip, you caught me! But yeah, i'm prejudiced, as i grew up with Darius and thus i'm more for action-packed and less planning action when scrolling from left to right.

Dunno if there's a CD release that's a straight port but the PCE hucard version seems to be a lot different from the MAME version (it's released as Rabio Lepus Special).

PCE version seems a lot harder (got to stage 4 in mame without trying, barely passed stage 1 in magic engine), and yet removes some depth (you can't bump the carrot boxes for 6000 extra points rather than destroying them and getting the item, correct me if I'm wrong). Also isn't Gun Frontier 1991? In which case this predates it with bomb 'fragments.'

Cool game, very nice graphics. MUCH better than Sonic Wings series.

Thanks TF!

I would love to see Hamster do A-Jax, since, IIRC, the only other platform it's avaialble on is the Sharp X68000.

Haunted Castle! Yay, the "lost" Castlevania comes to a home system at long last. I wonder why Konami didn't release it themselves... Castlevania Chronicles II wouldn't have hurt.

It was sold for US$22 at the store today, it would be cheaper at Play-Asia if you got a coupon. :o

Add to the suggestions: That game by the same people who did Strider (and which plays pretty much the same way). Hell, I can't remember its name.

Of course, it isn't a shmup, so I suppose this is OT.

Osman looks sweet!

Also, not sure if you know of it or not CMoon, but there's an SNES exclusive platformer that Atlus published for a U.S. release called Run Saber. It's another Strider clone.

I wish Yes-Asia would stock more of these Hamster releases other then the 6 origional ones. I'm not to fond of Play-Asia anymore, due to complications with a past order...

I've played Run Saber and it is OK. It definitely doesn't have anything on Strider though. I've heard Osman is absolutely brilliant, but will never get to play it unless I decide to take the PCB route someday...

Well, Play-Asia might takes a few days to ship out their order. But they got the best best online purchasing system for an Asia based online seller. And they do continuiously improve their system and service. Moreover, I think they charged a fair price in both game and shipping for most of the cases (see notes).

Notes:-
Game: They stock games that are hard to found in store even on this island in live. Time and time I was forced to bought the game I want at their site in stead of a local game store nearby. :o

They do mark up the games 10 to 20% more than a local game store. But consider PayPal changes, you could use a PA coupon and free shipping to my island, it comes down to a reasonable price. :x

Postage: Well, to be fair, I don't how much they charged for shipping to the States, but they do offer me free shipping to my island. And only a few bugs if I bought items like HRAP. :o

Thanks Neon! Wow, Osman seems a lot harder than strider 1 & 2 (i don't even know if the original programmers of strider had anything to do with the sequel.)

It's not a few days for me. I've had Psikyo Shooting Collection Vol. 3 on order since Feb. 12th, 2006. They still don't have it in stock... The only reason why I haven't cancelled it yet is because they don't charge you for the order until they ship it (thank god).

Whoops, I screwed up my previous post. I must have typed between the quote brackets. The whole parapgraph that goes like this:

"It's not a few days for me. I've had Psikyo Shooting Collection Vol. 3 on order since Feb. 12th, 2006. They still don't have it in stock... The only reason why I haven't cancelled it yet is because they don't charge you for the order until they ship it (thank god)."

That was my reply to SAM.
