Thanks! it's awesome to see Japanese did put digital pad support. Eurogamer says Taito Legends 2 has 39 games while we thought (via Play.com listing) that it had 40... Could you check what's missing?
I think the one on the play.com list that's missing from the game is PuLiRuLa.
I don't think you can turn off the purple borders like in the Xbox version though, or if you can, I havn't found out how.
what a great little collection! been playing this for a few hours with my girlfriend so not much time put into the shmups but so far the conversions seem excellent. there are even a few verts in here that i didn't know existed. gekirindan (sp?) seems pretty class and i'm off to have a proper go at it in a minute or two.
plus high score saves, plus 60hz, plus decent menus and confuigurable controls. cracking collection.
anyone else care to comment? i thought that this release would have more of a rapturous arrival..
Yeah not released in the State yet so many of the people on this board will not be able to comment on it.
Saying that I've reviewed the collection and I have to admit, Taito have done very little wrong here.
So far I've been mainly playing on Elevator Action Returns, Cadash, Dungeon Magic and Darius Gaiden. Although I have been putting a little time in to Bobble Bubble 2 and Pop 'n Pop today. I own one of the PSX and played the other on Emu a lot and they still as fresh today, brillant!

Yeah, I'm really discouraged about this. I can't import it because of the PAL thing. Sigh... Also, it doesn't help that the message boards on the official site are lifeless.

Well, perhaps E3 will yield something; I certainly hope so. It doesn't help that IGN lists Empire as the publisher for both the XBOX and the PS2 ports of this compilation, while Gamefaqs lists Sega as the publisher. In either case, right now, I seriously doubt the veracity of any earlier quoted statements in this thread stating that this compilation will arrive on US shores.

Don't lose faith just yet Dave, right now it's a wait and see situation, and the Xplosiv site finally finished their Taito Legends 2 section of the site. No release date is listed yet, but the forums lack of activity there definitely isn't encouraging (link in last post, it's no longer just the game's logo).
J-Manic wrote:You think they fixed the slowdown problem in G. Darius? If so, that would be a dream come true.
They fixed it. We can finally throw away our slowdown-plagued PSX version.
12 shmups on a single PS2 disc, is amazing.
What Taito have done is created the perfect gift to introduce friends to shmups. You can give someone PS2 Taito Legends 2 and they instantly have a pretty good "starter pack" shmup collection. The menu even explains some basic gameplay mechanics for each shmup for newcomers. This range of titles is nice and diverse, some simple shooters all the way up to some serious hardcore hits
Metal Black
Raystorm
Genkirindan
Space Invaders DX
Super Space Invaders '91
Darius Gaiden
Gun Frontier <- the game that inspired most of Raizing's titles
Space Invaders '95
Insector X
Grid Seeker
Syvalion
G-Darius

It definitely is just getting off the ground as it's just the logo only.
The webpage is finally fully operative... From what I can see, PuLiRuLa isn't on the Pc/Xbox pack either... I wonder if they took it out because of its weird content.
Does Darius Gaiden and Metal Black run slow for some people?
Changing between 50/60hz doesn't seem to help. Also I can't control the converging/diverging max beam in Metal Black
Ok, I just did a quick test.
Benchmark side-by-site:
1. Metal Black running on Taito Legends 2 at 60hz on a PS2
2. Metal Black running on a version of Mame (bendermameox) at 60hz on an Xbox
The Xbox Mame version did run slightly faster during both the attract sequence and during level one gameplay (by like roughly 10-15%). I can't draw any conclusions, since I don't have a PCB to compare against, so I don't know which is supposed to be the correct speed. It's possible that the Xbox Mame version runs slightly too fast, or the PS2 Taito Legends 2 runs slightly slow.
I am unclear what he means about the beam control.

2. Metal Black running on a version of Mame (bendermameox) at 60hz on an Xbox
I did a similar test with PS2 and Mame in Darius Gaiden and found that the PS2 version was 16/17% slower.

I think Mame is running at the correct speed since it appears to be in time with music. On the PS2 version, for example, there is a large gap in the music on the 2nd level of Metal Black. The PS2 version could be running at 50fps(PS1 Port?). However this is merely speculation.
I am unclear what he means about the beam control.
This is quite difficult to explain:
When the beam is used at max power it splits up covering the whole screen. The beam can then be focused by holding the beam button. Taito Legends 2 mentions this in the additional information page. This works in Mame but not in the PS2 version.

Does anyone know if these apparent problems were present in the NTSC-J Taito Memories PS2 releases?

Well if Mame's driver is accurate, then possibly these issues affecting the PS2 Taito Legends 2 might not be present in Xbox Taito Legends 2. (Since allegedly the Xbox version is based on a modified Mame core, while the PS2 version does not use any code from Mame.)

Can't say about the speed, but you sure can focus the beam in Memories. But I seem to remember it happened by tapping the fire button rapidly instead of holding it down.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.
these faults suck. i bought this comp almost entirely for metal black and darius gaiden.
anyone have the pc version? do they run at full speed on that comp? if so i'll probably pick that version up too and use it for those two games and the extra 4 not included elsewhere.

IIRC you may be right about the tapping, maybe AJhooglestein uses rapid-fire in Mame so he's just accustomed to focusing the beam by holding down his button. Especially if beam control worked in Memories, then it should work fine also in PS2 Taito Legends 2

I'm not using using any rapid fire that I know of. In the PS2 version of Taito Legends 2 it actually says you're supposed to hold the button down in the additional info page for Metal Black.
Also tapping either of the buttons in the PS2 version doesn't seem to work.

Neither is the fact that Xplosiv, like Empire, is a European-based company.

Xplosiv is Empire. It's just the brand they use for PS2 and PC budget releases.

Danny, you bought the Xbox version, right? Could you please enlighten us about these issues:
-is there PuLiRuLa?
-do D.Gaiden & Metal Black run at proper speed? (you can do a comparison with MAME on pc)
-can you focus the beam in Metal Black?
