My first time seeing this old thread, looking forward to playing this game, it looks positively awesome! You really should promote it more.

There seems to be a sort of early Irem feel to your graphics (not considering the Cave style bullets) which is all good in my book.

I'm bad at promotion, do it for me :3

Glad you like it, Tim's art style draws a lot from early 90s anime/mech designs.

So basically, here's what happened. After I was done updating XOP, I went back and did some more checking around, and .. it turns out, after all that, XOP was actually better than XOP Black. Oops. So I set out to rectify this, by adding new enemies, more background art, changed/new boss/midboss shot patterns and reworking the level layouts to accommodate this.

I'm even considering including both XOP and XOP Black updates in some new package with both games and a new name, just to differentiate from the old versions. They're that much different/better IMO. We'll see what happens, though.

I will have to release these updates soon though, lest I completely go nuts and get checked into a mental asylum before it's all over. :P

I'm also going to start asking for donations .. because basically, I quit my job to work on this stuff again. No, I'm not kidding. I'm going to keep going with XOP G, after these updates are done, too. Yeah, I'm probably crazy. Oh well, I'm enjoying working on shmups every day too much to care :P

Wow that's crazy indeed. But to be honest I'm ranking a proper new XOP game right next to a new Cave port and I actually couldn't decide which to play, if I had to choose one. Your games have by far the best scoring mechanics/gameplay I've ever seen in a freeware shmup.
If I just had a proper job, I'd probably donate something. :|

I got XOP a while back after seeing it in a "top 10 doujin shmups" blog entry. Didn't know the creator was on this forum, in fact, I think I wasn't even on this forum at the time I got the game. Great job man!

I won't say "no" to XOP updates, but I would really like more (new) games from you, even if they cost money.

Yes, XOP G is next.

Added new hell battleship type to level 3 and EX0.

Also a look at some new level 3 enemies.

I'm also not really in the situation to throwaway my money, but for two great games I felt like donating at least a little bit. (You're crazy indeed.)

So has the XOP update been finished now?
EDIT: Oops forget it, might at first learn to read posts properly...

XOP and XOP Black now have some side art to cover the previously black borders of the screen. Each level has a different set of art, although I shared them across both games. I also added options to tate the screen, and disable the scanlines completely.

Now maybe people will finally stop bitching about XOP's screen size and/or having horizontal scanlines in a vertical game!

Hey, I can always dream, can't I? :P

So I decided to go with the new name idea after all. The changes and additions are just too extensive at this point to warrant otherwise. Tentative title right now is XOP Ultra/XOP Black Ultra

Moar changes:

Arcade course 2nd loop removed. The remaining single loop is a mix of 1st loop and 2nd loop shot patterns with some enemies firing faster, and others firing more bullets.
New level added to arcade course! More on that soon.
EX0 integrated into EX course. No longer score attack only.
Both courses now have 5 levels each.

Yay no loops! The changes really do sound great, meanwhile I'm looking forward to the new revision and motivated to play it again. I just hope it will be the last revision this time.

What about the new version of XOP by the way? There's still just the 2010 version available at your site.

@Battletoad: I am planning to release them both at the same time. XOP has been "Done" for some time now, but I'm still planning to go back and test everything again, after XOP Black.

@Ride88: There are issues with bringing XOP/Black to XBLIG. Porting a C/Allegro app to C#/XNA is not an easy task, it would likely require a complete rewrite of the drawing engine, and a bunch of the code that uses pointers would prob. have to be nuked from orbit or changed around significant. Plus MS charges like $150 for a year's "Subscription" to XNA publishing. :/

@S20-TBL: It's pretty crazy, but it's something I felt I should do.

I would probably buy an Indie release of ANY Xop of this caliber for as much as 800 MS Live! points.

The most you can charge is 400 MS points, which is about $5.

Dunno' what's wrong with me. I skipped by this every time I saw the name, because it put me off. I now feel really stupid.
Enjoying this XOP Black a lot!

EDIT: Damn, works on my Windows laptop but not my Mac in Wine.
Google Translate tells me that Unlimited Mode "is for people who like festivals."
