Wow, good decision.
Thank you mods, for "saving shmups from mediocrity."

Yeah, calling other people pedophiles every time he has the possibility, nothing wrong with that. (Even outside of off-topic)

Serious suggestion: Close off topic completely, or auto-ban everyone who reaches 50% amount of total posts in off-topic.

Friendly I don't care either way, but he seems overly sensitive if he lets someone like Skykid get to him.

Skykid himself, great forum contributor, I've only seen light trolling from him, and when he does it's usually well deserved.

Please unban Skykid. The quality of posts on these forums has been dropping for a few years, and banning one of the few semi-decent posters here certainly isn't going to help.

+1 for Skykid. Don't really see why he would deserve a ban, he does have a tendency to get provoked into useless cicular arguments from time to time, but it's not like he insulted anybody, and his posts are generally quality.

Don't see why Friendly should be banned either, apart from getting bogged down in arguments with Skykid, he never struck me as being particular disruptive or anything. If he does come back, he should be forced to change his retarded avatar though. ;)

Haven't really read enough from Siren to form an opinion, not sure if his racist post was serious or trolling.

Skykid is banned at the moment? Brilliant.

It's about time he joined rank with shoe-sama in shmups forum purgatory. This almost makes missing the annual Top 25 seem like a fair trade-off.

Edit: Friendly too? What a shake-up.

I'm sure it's some technically challenging thing in regard to forum software, but I still think it's really a necessity that people can "ignore" others. While never perfect, it has great potential to defuse personality conflicts that otherwise result in a lot of offtopic bickering.

Not that I ever made any significant forum contribution, but I know that several folks stopped visiting simply because a small handful of people got on their last nerve.

Man, you people love your drama. Barring any unforeseen inputs from the mod team, it was my intention from the start for the bans to be temporary. Skykid and Friendly will be unbanned some time tomorrow. Siren will be waiting a while longer.
Cagar wrote:auto-ban everyone who reaches 50% amount of total posts in off-topic.
Heh, something like "if your posts in Off Topic are over 50% of your total post count, Off Topic will become inaccessible until the ratio has been corrected" would be cool to see. Or for an even softer approach, we could prevent posts in Off Topic from incrementing one's post count altogether.

It's not, actually, the "Friends and Foes" feature comes standard with this version of the forum software. It's just been disabled, because adults should be able to handle themselves online with some decorum. Enabling it might indeed help in these situations, but it could also create a lot of confusion. Imagine a real-life situation where ten people are talking, but two of them can't hear each other at all, and one of them can't hear three other people but they can hear him. Not a perfect analogy, but you get the idea. Still, enabling it is something to consider.

People still end up seeing what their "foes" posted because it gets quoted in others posts. However you don't see their posts directly, so it reduces the urge to throw out a knee-jerk reply that often ends up adding more noise than signal.

I disagree with this sentiment in general. I originally came here for the shmups, but lost interest in the genre a while back (possibly temporary), but I stay for the community. This really is the best board out there, IMO, for general gaming discussion and miscellaneous geekary.

I don't understand the hate towards the off topic portion of the forum, even if the nod is in jest. It seems like this sentiment came up a few months back. I can't remember which moderator it was that professed their disdain for off topic, but I really don't understand how it degrades the rest of the forum like it is being insinuated. Every forum has an off topic. Most people stay out of it because they come for the subject the forum was created for. I'm the same way with certain forums myself; I don't visit SRK or NeoGeo off topic, but I let them be. I don't understand the mentality of a regular member visiting off topic if one hates it so much.

I respect moderation and believe it should be enforced, but the large group of folks that primarily visit the off topic certainly aren't hurting the integrity of the shmups forum as a whole. I assumed Skykid and Friendly's forced departure was a temporary thing, but it was still ambiguous as to his permanent fate, thus resulting in the uproar. I doubt there would have been any subsequent "drama" if a temporary ban was clearly stated.

I dunno, I've met a lot of nice folks here. Some I even talk to outside of the forum now. There's a lot of people that reside here with similar interests outside of just gaming, which is why I feel the off topic really shines in as a community with a lot of variation. Likewise, it's quite uplifting to see everyone coming together to get back one of our own. We are brothers of off topic.

Well, you'd be getting rid of folks like myself, and at some point down the road I think a lot of the old timers. If you really want to do that, then be my guest. I seriously doubt I would try to rectify my ratio... especially since I think I bring at least something to the table, even though I'm rarely in Shmups Chat these days.

There is nothing wrong with the Off Topic, except the occasional thread that degenerates into picture spam, and I know the mods (rightfully) hate that anyway. Everything else is fine. The retro console threads are great sources of information packed with posts from gamers with years of experience under their belts, for example.

Skykid is a good guy. Kind of too willing to rush to his own defense, but his reaction of utter joy on looping DOJ BL is like, what shmups are all about. The man knows what's up.

My only memory of friendly is that I mentioned that I was Jewish and he used that opportunity to pull the "I'm superior to you because I'm an atheist" card with zero provocation. His username certainly wasn't accurate.

That actually really pisses me off. I identify as both Jewish (cultural/genetic) and an Atheist (and sometimes slipping into agnostic mode when I feel like it :)).

With regards to off-topic vs shmups chat, "go play games", etc.:

I log in to see what people with similar tastes have to say about new or older games. It's rare to find anyone in day to day life with similar taste in anything, for better or worse. I probably wouldn't have found out about brutal doom if it weren't for this forum, not to mention movie and anime recommendations. When you find people you have similar interests with, it's easier to find some common ground and explore something you may have looked over. At least from my perspective.

Topics like this are why I visit:
http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=32746
http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=41506
http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=39862
http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=42980

I rarely venture into shmups chat anymore, because I'm not really interested in any new Cave games or doujins. If there is a bumped Mars Matrix or Psikyo topic in Shmups chat, I'll go lurk, but I probably won't post because I've forgotten almost everything I ever learned in those games and have nothing to add except: "look at all those fucking bullets. that's a good game."
I do check hi-score fairly often to see if anything old have been bumped. Especially, to see if Gus is doing anymore ridiculous shit with Futari.

I (mostly) post in worthless topics as an easy way to be involved in some capacity. See: 10% of post in drunk thread.

Also as Drauch said, I've met quite a few people through this forum and have enjoyed their company.

Edit: I just realized how much trading I have done on this forum. There is that factor too. Trading on SRK or Gaf is a pain, because of how fast those forums move.
