Bloody hell the final boss actually says:

I'M GOING TO SCARE YOU LIKE YOU'VE NEVER BEEN SCARED BEFORE!

and then when you kill him:

IF I GO TO HELL I'M TAKING YOU WITH ME!

Then he doesnt. He just explodes. And you start the 2nd loop.

Have you tried plugging the controller into the second port? Gradius V on the PS2 lets you go through the menus with both controllers and you can play 2P side by hitting start while using the controller in port 2.

Also, has anyone else noticed that seed bombing cancels nearby bullets? There might actually be a benefit to hanging onto 3 options + a seed so that you can dump all of them for a quick bullet cancel.

Use an old mame version like 98, and set the affinity to one cpu, if you haven't tried both these yet? Running it in Direct3D may help too.

Apparently it's possible to get through the section before the final boss with no speedups, but you need to go right at the first intersection, and it's tricky as hell to pull off.

I've done it with no speedups plenty of times and I always go left. It's scary the first few times because you graze the walls in parts, but I actually have a better success rate with no speedups than anything else.

How do you consistently get the yellow 100k value ship in 1-4 to spawn? (and by extension 2-4)

I've restarted at least 10 credits tonight because it decided to be absent on me. ._.

I think it's related to the timing of the second ship kill but that is speculation on my part. I'd definitely be interested to know more.

I'm doing much better at this game now that I have the rank down, and I expect to loop, but I'm using Mame+ 1.06 (not Wolfmame, thank god) which doesn't have official savestate support. Sometimes when I'm loading a state it'll pause or otherwise crap out on me. What can be done to fix this problem?

I think I prefer games that don't rely on knowing obtuse scoring tricks but rather are more about execution of clear, basic mechanics for score...

I think you have to wait through the rom check at the beginning before you load the state or else it won't work. If that's not the problem, I don't know what is.

I had the same issue when runnin 0.106. All you have to do at start up is wait until you can input a credit.. Then load your savestate. Should work fine.

I think it involves not destroying parts of the ship. These ships have 3 parts: the engine, the fin above the engine, and the main body itself. The 3rd ship seems to be triggered if you only target the main body of the first 2 ships. But when the 3rd ship arrives, make sure to take out the fin and the engine or else you won't get that nice 100k bonus...

This guy says it's exactly like that. Oh, that's a detailed guide on how position/power up to get and destroy the 100k ship, in jap.

Also it wasn't until reading the general tips there that I noticed playing as Super Ophidian gives you less starting rank(it should be really obvious from stage 1 popcorn blasting me as vic vs. not blasting me as super, but, oh well)

It's still a fun game to clear at least, even if a huge chunk of your score comes from secret tricks. Just not as much fun for scoring.

Any tips on the Stage 4 100,000 point thing?

I can get the yellow ship to appear, but I can't get the 100,000 off it since it seems like no matter what I shoot on it, I can't get the others.

Also I keep screwing up stuff leaving me game overing on stage 5 boss or stage 6.

I think I personally hate the increasing rank more and when you die because your rank is too high, you end being a snail that can barely move. Still better than increasing rank + checkpoints though.

You mean the TWO tricks that are very easy to do consistently with a minimal amount of practice? This game has been making this week feel like a vacation, I'm enjoying it much more than I expected to.

Contrary to what I expected, I don't enjoy this game much, and normally, I prefer horis to verts. The whole game feels clunky and inconsistent. Not that it matters much, but artistically, it's also a mess. I'd much rather play any Gradius (yes, even III or IV) or Salamander 1.

Besides, why are we playing Sala 2 this week, even though it very clearly is not a (pure) hori.
