Your most exciting shmup purchase everrrrrrr?
Re: Your most exciting shmup purchase everrrrrrr?
Getting my Futari Black Label Kit... there was a whole situation that occurred with that purchase that made it painful. But in the end the thrill of having it was VERY satisfying. I love that kit.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Dino Riki for nintendo. I remember they had a demo of it at toys-r-us, and i begged my mom to get it for me as a gift.
Odd yes, shmup maybe, but there was something very eye catching to me about how that game played. I started to get into contra following that game, then i started to really get into shmups. still love me some gradius and rtype for the super nintendo, then every system thereafter i made sure i had a healthy supply of shmups

Wow, I've had Gamera 2000 lying around for years. I forgot to play it. Is it an expensive collectible yet, or still available for $5?Daigohji wrote:It's that or Gamera 2000, which I love because it's GAMERA, plays like Rez, and because it features incredible acting.

Probably Battle Garegga.
I bought it two years ago, and it still doesn't feel real. Kinda hate that feeling, but yeah.

No way! I technically live in South Slope with my girlfriend I think... I have no idea where the neighborhood lines are. Some 2 player stuff would definitely be cool. I want to try and see what Next Level is all about. I think having a shmup event there would be awesome.finisherr wrote:My lady lives in Prospect Park South so I'm in that area often. We're likely moving to South Slope/Windsor Terrace together next year. Perhaps we should do some 2 player runs of Futari and Resurrection sometime. Anyway, definitely visit Video Games New York. Great staff. Great inventory.
I also want to add to my answer of "Futari" and say that I was probably more excited for my Street Fighter IV TE stick as it was my first stick.

Most exciting shmup purchase?
Hmmmmm.
A week or so after I got my first cabinet (Aero City)- having spent several days restoring it - I went on the hunt for some PCBs to play. All I had was Street Fighter 2 which the seller left in the cab.
I SCOURED the trading forum here and on KLOV looking for a Dodonpachi board.
Finally I found a seller with both DDP and the OG Donpachi.
I chose DOnpachi because it was only 200 some-odd bucks. The three days before it arrived were painfully angst ridden!
When that USPS box arrived I jizzed in my shorts.

Now, waiting for NCSX to ship DFK, my current pants interior crotch region await a thorough hosing down.

Fuck yeah, Gamera!
Re: Your most exciting shmup purchase everrrrrrr?
This is an easy one. I was in Tokyo about 2 months ago and after nearly a week of looking in every game store in Akihabara and even some of the remote Mandarake locations, I decided that my "big souvenir" was going to be a mint, boxed copy of Recca I found in Mandarake. Riding the train out there knowing what I was about to spend and then travelling all the way back to the states with a grail was a blast!
The icing on the cake were all of the other classic shmups I bought at the same time (Zanac X Zanac, Battle Garegga, Batsugun, etc). All told, the trip netted me 70 new games, probably a third of which were shmups.

Re: Your most exciting shmup purchase everrrrrrr?
in the early spring of 2005, after many months of searching, I finally found a Summer Carnival '92: Recca Famicom cartridge, boxed, for a modest price of $180.00 plus $20 shipping… $200 total to my mail box…
I played this game in emulation, fell in love with it, but I couldn't believe a Famicom game could run this well, so I had to have the original cartridge… I was well aware of it's rarity and price, but would not be deterred! to finally find it and play it on my television screen… I was happy and pleased that this game played as it did!

Re: Your most exciting shmup purchase everrrrrrr?
I've had a few, but I suppose one of the bigger moments was with Thunder Force V: Special Pack. I was so stoked for this game after reading about it in GameFan, and got a Sega Satellite with it so I could play it. When it arrived, I played the living hell out of it, and listened to the remix CD quite a bit for a while. Good times.
Other notable moments that easily rival it would be finally ending a 13 year hunt for Curse on the Genesis (brand new copy to boot), getting to mail order Lightening Force back in the day well over a year after I learned it was Thunder Force IV, tracking down complete copies of Battle Garegga and Hyper Duel thanks to a friend who was a seller on ebay (back before I knew what ebay really was), ordering Thunder Force Gold Pack 2 to play TFAC, and getting Radiant Silvergun from EB after reading about it in GameFan (before everyone and their mother wanted it and drove up the price).

In terms of the most recent purchase, I would have to say Gradius V. I almost 1CC'd the entire game but the last level got me. Anyway, another exciting one was R-Type III because I had never tried the game before and I was awaiting it in the mail. It certainly lived up to its expectations 'cause I looped the game twice on one continue and managed to beat it completely. Last but not least would have to be Space Megaforce/Axelay. There are more for the PCE and stuff, but I can't remember.
Didactically speaking, seminal evidence seems to explicate the fact that your repudiation of entropy supports my theory of space-time synthesis. Of this, I am irrefutably confident

A shmup event at Next Level would be pretty neat. I'm not really good enough to play for score or competitively, but it would be fun to watch some people utterly crush some of these modern shmups. Next Level needs to get some Egret IIs or Sega Astro Cities. That'd be sweet.rancid3000 wrote:No way! I technically live in South Slope with my girlfriend I think... Thanks man! I just ordered Soukyugurentai Otokuyo from a fellow who lives a couple of hours from me so that should be coming in way before the Batsugun from Japan does. Everything's arrived except for the games and it is torture hehe. Gonna sell my PS3 in a few days so I can buy MORE GAMES.J-Manic wrote:That is an awesome start to a Saturn collection.MrChiggins wrote:I just placed five separate orders between ebay and amazon... and I've never been more excited!

Re: Your most exciting shmup purchase everrrrrrr?
I may. Depends on how well the S-Video cable works out on the hdtv. That tv's big enough that anything not being tated won't matter at all to me. If there's input lag there, then it'll be time to tate my 30ish-inch tube tv! Probably gonna have to try that once or twice either way just to see what it looks like.chempop wrote:^Souky and Batsu are both great choices for starting your Saturn collection. Re: Your most exciting shmup purchase everrrrrrr?
I say just go with what you're used to. When I finally figured out how to tate my TV it didn't help me at all and in fact I had a lot harder time playing as I was used to playing on a smaller screen.

Re: Your most exciting shmup purchase everrrrrrr?
Yoko!!! Thanks haha I completely forgot that word even existed. But yeah the games I tated on my computer monitor certainly looked gorgeous but the difference between tate and yoko there didn't bother me nearly enough to inspire me to tate that often. Then again, I only got into shmups a year ago max so maybe over time not using tate mode will start to bother the shit out of me and I won't be able to play on anything else. Could see that happening.Sumez wrote:The game resolution will still be limited in yoko mode.MrChiggins wrote:That tv's big enough that anything not being tated won't matter at all to me.

98PaceCar: Nice collection.... I still don't know how you have the patience to play games on saturn or playstation 1..... it's like 50% loadings screen and 50% gameplay
Don't get me wrong, I bought a sega saturn at launch.... I think september 1995... for $500. It was a great system but it's cd unit is so slow. I bought Umk3 in 1996 and before each match it took like 12 seconds of loadings.
I sure was patient back then, now since I hit the 30ies...... I have none, that's why I play my shooters on quad-core Mame instead

Every shoot-'em-up purchase I've ever made has been exciting. Right now I'm excited over Dodonpachi Resurrection 1.5, which I'll be able to lend out to other 360 gamers for a taste of the shoot-'em-up goodness

Re: Your most exciting shmup purchase everrrrrrr?
I guess one of the most exciting purchases I ever made was Thunder Force VI.
As a kid and a teenager, I didn't have the money to buy games.
Once grown-up I had a large back catalog to fill in my collection, and only started buying newly released games from 2008 on.
Imagine a long-time fan of Thunder Force getting his hands on a brand-new, supposedly jawsum comeback of the series.
It was amazing, at least until the package was opened and the game started unfolding before my eyes...

Yeah this Resurrection release is definitely on my list to buy. That and Muchi Muchi Pork/Pink Sweets are the only two Cave releases that work with American 360's that I haven't bought yet.xbl0x180 wrote:Every shoot-'em-up purchase I've ever made has been exciting. Haha I never have played a Thunder Force game. A lot of people seem to hold most of the series in high regard... especially IV and V. To be honest they never looked that fun to me but there's probably something I'm missing and wouldn't get until I play one of them.Kollision wrote:As a kid and a teenager, I didn't have the money to buy games.
