Tsukihime is great as well.

Oh, and I thought of another one. It is also a VN type thing, but you have to conquer Japan. So you set up territories, wage war on other states etc (there is a map of Japan and you manage the territories from there) and there is a combat system too but it is more of a strategical thing. The game of course, is named "Sengoku Rance." Here is a video showing both aspects of the game, but not the usual VN stuff. It is an eroge.

At a certain point in the story the game gets brutally, brutally hard too.

Ooh, Venus Wars! That was a great one. It's in my collection, but I've only seen it once. Riding those bikes through the canyons on Mars had such fluid animation and was the most memorable part of the movie. I often got it confused with Big Wars, which I finally saw and didn't care much for.

I recognized the girl with light blue hair, but it wasn't a show I've seen.

I'm not saying Manga is bad btw, they have released good series but people are picky about quality.

If you think about it its simlar to the NA DS localisation. Most ppl will buy the game and enjoy it not knowing its been altered from the arcade original, where as fas in the know might hate it and look down on NA DS compared to JPN DS.

When it comes to most anime im certainly with the ignorant majority.

BTW Damn fine pic CJ, very unique :)

It's from Growlanser (V): Heritage of War(US), aka Generations (JP).

Decent game, great art.

Hihou Densetsu Chris no Bouken (by Pack-In-Video of Magical Pop'n fame) for the PC Engine CD sort of fits here as she starts with a knife. She also resembles Lara Croft a lot (there's even some backstory about her treading in her missing father archeologist's footsteps), which for a 1991 game is quite remarkable.

It plays well... until the time limit kills her off with a thunderbolt. A game focused on speerunning could use some dash mechanics if you ask me. The balance between maturity and chibi-ness isn't as fine here as it was in The Wing of Madoola or The Guardian Legend, but at least the music is quite good. Almost reminds me of something I'd really like to put my hands on... Clannad mayhap? Come to think of it, Peter Hammill in the early nineties used to exploit synthesizers in a similar manner, but I'm not finding the album version of Our Oyster (which is probably THE track that intro reminds me of) on YouTube at the moment. You know, those MIDI samples, or whatever makes for that flavour.

I've been playing a lot of Popful Mail on the Super Famicom lately. I'm really getting into it and I enjoy it a lot. I can't see how anyone can play the game without understanding Japanese, though, unless you have a -lot- of patience.

I just came across like game today. Its basically Langrisser 1 / Warsong but in a sci fi setting. Vixen 357 by Masaya http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCOo5rK8VhA

A quick look on google shows that this is another unknown untranslated mega drive game (pulls hair out, damn all you lucky SNES fans) Scratch another game that makes me wish I could read Kanji :x

This reminds me. I bought this figure of a character named Clain Clain from a game called Generations of Chaos (can't remember which one) a few years ago. I've never played the game, but girls with swords kick ass.

^ reminded me of Claymore, that did. Lots of girls with swords in that one, a bit Berserk-like in tone.

And of course there's a game based on it.

I like claymore, shame all the quality mangas are monthly issued. Ill be a old man by the time claymore, gantz and berserk finishes (still we get some fantastic artwork though)

And going just by the video that game doesnt look as bad as ild of expected a manga licensed game to be, still if I was to play a claymore game ild rather play a golden axe / guardian heroes hack and shasher

Nice fig! I have this Saber fig from Fate/Stay Night. I was going to take the picture myself but all I have is a mobile phone camera and it looks terrible, but this is the same fig anyways.

Ooh, me likey! I love Masaya games. I'd like to make a Masaya-dedicated website, but I couldn't speak with much authority. Maybe I could just chronicle all their neat-tastic games.

I also like Vysethedetermined's dedication (or shall I say, determination?) to catalog so many retro games. It's great. Vixen 357's gameplay looks identical to Masaya's Macross: Eternal Love Song. I played the crap out of that game. The gameplay is not nearly as deep as Super Robot Taisen, so I'm sure you could play Vixen 357 without a translation.

Not sure what you mean by "lucky SNES fans." Is it because there are more SFC games getting translated than Megadrive games?

Some of those pics remind me of that sci-fi thriller, The Cell. Surreal yet compelling. Seems like something seen within a dream but when one finally awakes, all vivid dreamy details are lost. Interesting usage of models in various poses/settings with the old-school hand colored effects.

I'm wondering this too. Langrisser 2 and Monster World IV were translated recently, so it's not like the MD isn't getting any translation love. There's also that Starfish licensed game Star Odyssey being released by Super Fighter Team (translation of Blue Almanac).

Great stuff greg, looks really good. I'm surprised at how nice her shield's specular looks in that pic - seems like the camera gives it just the little boost of light it needs to look shiny. :)

Well, that's pixel art for you. Polygonal Golden Sun saddens me.

Saudek must have been rather influential among visual artists of all sorts. Not quite unlike Giger, he probably have influenced quite a few filmmakers too.

About the snes its mostly just me moaning but there are more snes games that have been patched then other platforms. Rom hacking.net has around 80 MD and 250 SNES, still if you look at the number of patches for later systems like the saturn where the numbers are very sparse, I should think the MD is lucky
