A little harsh on the Sklar brothers, methinks Blue. Sure they can't hold a candle to Mike, Joel and the bots. Nonetheless I think their lines can be downright witty.
Anyways, the three MST3K skits all had great lines. They did a great job riffing the Sklars and their skits.
Tom (referring to black staffer in background) "Is that guy the other Sklar brother?"
Mike: "Will you sign my Frampton comes alive album?"
"Why are they putting James Carville on his back?"
But I want more. Come back to TV, guys.
You just proved you can riff just as well as ever. Time Chasers 2 is being made! WHO is going to riff it???

I don't know about that. I've seen the Skylar Brother's standup routine, I've heard them on the radio, and now I've seen this show. And I don't think they're funny in any way, shape or form. That just made it even more enjoyable to hear Mike and the bots make fun of them
Speaking of MST3K, I saw Manos for the first time today. What a surreal movie! I'm not sure if it's worse than Castle of Fu Manchu, though. Both are bad in their own ways.

Reading this thread brought some good memories of MST3K. So I went out and bought the Vol. 4 DVD set and the MST3K Essentials DVD. All the episodes on the Vol. 4 set are new to me so I'm loving every minute of it. The Essentials are my favorite classic episodes.
Does anyone else remember when Comedy Central ran the MST3K Turkey Day marathon all day? It was a tradition for me to get up on Thanksgiving Day when it started and try to watch as much as I could. I was glad to see that the Sci-Fi channel also kept that tradition when MST3K transitioned over to that channel at least for a few years. Thanksgiving these days just doesn’t feel the same.

Cheap Seats is about all I have seen of them. I know they had a show on MTV quite a few years ago but I only saw part of it once.Blue Lander wrote:I don't know about that. And yes, Manos is by far the weirdest movie they ever watched. But it's far funnier than Fu Manchu which is just a flat out dumb, bland and incoherent pulp movie. Manos is surreal and such an /awful movie yet so goofy they are able to make fun of it easier. Part of the reason it's so funny I think is it tries to be a serious/arty movie but totally fails obviously. haha
Fu Manchu is just one of those dryer movies they have trouble riffing I think. Hamlet and Fu Manchu are the two episodes my brother (also a die hard MST) refuses to watch now as I mentioned before.

Oh yeah, Hamlet was probably the most boring MST3K episode I've ever seen. I don't intend to watch it again. I've watched Fu Manchu 5 or 6 times over the years, and once you finally figure out what's going on, it's a bit less terrible. But yeah, Fu Manchu has no intrinsic value. It's just crap. Manos, which might have worse production values, at least is weird and bizarre enough to keep you interested.
Have you read the story of how Manos was made? Apparently a fertilizer salesman in Texas decided he was going to make a movie, and the result is Manos. He played the husband in the movie, I think. It's the only movie he ever made, thankfully. The camera they used to film the movie didn't have sound capabilities, so they had to add voices and sound effects in a studio after all was said and done. I think a total of 4 people do all the voices for the movie, which is why the little girl has such a bizarre sounding voice.

I didn't know that but i did read that many of the people who uh "starred" in the movie committed suicide, sadly. One more thing to add to the film's "infamy."Blue Lander wrote:Oh yeah, Hamlet was probably the most boring MST3K episode I've ever seen. I don't intend to watch it again. EDIT: Just to be clear one thign that's very clear is the movie is dubbed poorly. I caught that.
I love Joel's tone of voice when the two police officers are talking:
"This is just one guy talking........just one guy." haha

I think Torgo killed himself 6 months after the movie ended.
This page has a link to two articles about the making of Manos. Both are interesting reads.

I just finished watching the movie Looney Tunes: Back in Action. If you don't like Looney Tunes, THEN STOP READING THIS POST! YOU MEAN TO SAY YOU DON'T LIKE BUGS BUNNY? I HATE YOU AND YOU MAKE ME PUKE SO JUST GO AWAY NOW, FOOL!
Okay. Anyhow, there's a scene when they're in Area 52 in the Nevada desert (Are 51 is just a fantasy concocted to distract the populace from the true secret, Area 52. Great stuff. Anyhow, in Area 52 they have plenty of aliens locked up. Marvin the Martian unleashes them to attack Brandon Frazer. I spotted two monsters from MST3K: Ro-Man from Robot Monster, Episode 107, and the Mu-tant from This Island Earth, aka MST3K: The Movie. Great stuff. Robot Monster has become one of my favorite episodes. The screen even flashes and Ro-Man says "There is no escape!" Also to be seen in Area 52 are Daleks from Dr. Who, Robby the Robot, the Body Snatchers, and Joan Cusak being zany. There's some other aliens I wasn't able to identify.
Also on the DVD is a brand new Looney Toons cartoon. I haven't laughed out loud at a Coyote and Roadrunner cartoon since I was a kid. If they'd make new stuff like this instead of that new bizarre Looney Tunes Beyond or whatever it is, I'd be extremely happy.

Thanks for the info guys. I've always been mystified by this...err, "film", and this clears things up somewhat.

Now that I've had some time to reflect back on Manos, I think I enjoyed it. It's easily the worst movie ever made and totally insane in every way, but I enjoyed watching the insanity unfold.
I've been able to find a little something to enjoy about every MST3K movie I've seen, except one. The ONLY episode I refuse to ever watch again is Alien from LA with Kathy Ireland. Just listening to her voice drives me absolutely insane.

Picked up Volume 7. Can't wait to see the lost short "Assignment Venezuela" which for thise that don't know, was originally going to be on the long ago cancelled CDROM game. I have already seen both Killer Shrews and Prince of Space but they are both great episodes and totally worth it. Have never seen Hercules Unchained and Hercules vs. the Moonmen.
Speaking of the CDROM "game," Mike Nelson commented on it in a chud.com interview recently, here's a snippet:

Q: But there is some stuff on the set from the CD-ROM project that never took off.
Nelson: We were going to be in business with Criterion, and I can’t remember what their CD-ROM company name was at the time, and so we came up with a wacky premise for some game parodies. A parody of Mist, of course, called Stiff. And we also had an idea for a flight simulator, which simulated commercial flights. So you got on an airliner and sat there. You could only win the game by logging intense hours of sitting on the plane having your sit kicked by a kid behind you. And you could find copies of novels that people had left behind in the seats, so there were sort of parodies of John Grisham and stuff like that. It was a crazy little idea, but unfortunately it didn’t move through Criterion so it was kind of scotched because they didn’t have any people on it at the time.

I just finished watching volume 7 and man, another great set of episodes. The movie that stood out the most in this volume (imho) was "The Killer Shrews." This episode reminded me of the movie "Alien", but with a bunch of drunks hanging out. Btw, did anyone see this negative review of Volume 7 on The Digital Bits? http://www.thedigitalbits.com/reviews3/ ... 50305.html

I finally picked up both Night of the Living Dead and Carnival of Souls, with Mike Nelson's commentary. Not bad, considering it's just one guy (instead of three), and without the team of excellent writers they had on MST3K.
Oh, and has anyone else seen the madness that is Ray Dennis Steckler's The Incredibly Strange Creatures That Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies? In terms of sheer incompetence/brilliance, it may just be the closest runner-up to Manos and Monster-A-Go Go. Steckler was also the cameraman on Eegah, IIRC. Awesome stuff!

I haven't seen the Incredibly Strange creatures, ect. One of the few Sci Fi era episodes I missed. Thanks for your impression, I could use some more Manos style pain. Butnot Monster A-go-go, man that movie is so dry and stupid it was hard for them to riff I can tell. It's just some stupid tall guy in a crappy "space suit" walking around aimlessly while the cops try to find him.MadSteelDarkness wrote:Oh, and has anyone else seen the madness that is Ray Dennis Steckler's The Incredibly Strange Creatures That Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies? Killer Shrews is great yes, Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltraine vs. Festus! lol

Killer Shrews is great yes, Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltraine vs. Festus! lol I just read the digital bits review (well part of it). He says right off the bat he doesn't like MST3K anyways. To each his own but he tries to compare them to some people he recently encountered in a theater "who were talking like they were in their living room all gangsta and like." I don't get that comparison because Joel, Mike, Kevin, Trace and Bill never tried to act hip when they riffed, it is good writing even if you don't like it. Not like it's kids sitting behind you at a theater who are just stupid.Gydocker45 wrote:I just finished watching volume 7 and man, another great set of episodes. Saw my first couple of mediocre MST3K episodes the other day. No amount of riffing can compensate for the uneventfulness of Attack of the Giant Leeches and Gunslinger. The movies themselves were pretty bland, featuring none of the zaniness and outrageous moments that I’m accustomed to with MST3K.
My disappointment with MST3K was short-lived upon watching “Prince of Space” last night. “I told you: Your weapons are useless again me!”
Any fans of AOTGL or Gunslinger here?

My favorite line from AOTGL:
Just as the people rally to go blow up the leaches lair... "Dick Brautigan's 'Trout Fishing with Dynamite'"
I can see why some people wouldn't like volume six that much though as it represents a more classic era of the show (they're all Joel), which I love, but for those who came into the show with Mike the pacing can seem kind of slow. Volume seven is one of the best ones yet put out, with the two classic Hercules episodes AND Prince of Space AND a bunch of shorts.

FULL LOCK is BOMB
I just saw an incredibly funny movie last night: The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra. It's a modern-day spoof on 50's B-grade flicks, filmed in black and white... basically the majority of MST3K episodes. The best part was watching the skeleton walk around the desert. So awesome. I signed up for the unlimited rentals for one month at Blockbuster, and saw this movie on the new release rack. Definitely worth a look. The sad thing is, if those people who had gone to see Plan 9 From Outer Space and took it seriously back in the day had seen this movie, they likely would've not found anything hilarious about this movie.

Good news from MST3K.com: The Film Crew (Mike, Kevin, and Bill) will be hosting a marathon of alien movies on Encore and providing running commentary! Finally, they're doing modern movies! Full-length ones, not just the clips from the summer blockbuster previews. Here's the info:
FILM CREW TO HOST MARATHON ON ENCORE
The Film Crew (Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett) will be hosting an "Alien Invasion" movie marathon on the Encore cable network Saturday, June 25 and Sunday, June 26th. Commentary from the Crew will run between movies throughout the two-day event.
Scheduled to be shown (all times are ET/PT):
Saturday, June 25th
Noon - It: The Terror From Beyond Space
1:10 p.m. - Predator
3:00 p.m. - The Blob (1988 remake)
4:40 p.m. - Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation
6:15 p.m. - The Thing (John Carpenter's remake)
8:05 p.m. - Predator (again)
10:00 p.m. - The Puppet Masters
Sunday, June 26th
Midnight - Alien Intruder
1:40 a.m. - Predator (one more time)
I'll have to bother my folks to record this for me, since I don't have cable TV! (Or maybe it's about time I started paying for cable???)

No, you usually get Encore when you get the Stars package. It's the same company.8 1/2 wrote:Consider it TIVO'ed. Too cool. I just hope that I get Encore. I haven't checked to see exactly which movie channels I get. I get HBO so I better get it.

I had forgotten about this thread, but I haven't forgotten about 8 1/2....
Since the thread has been resurrected, I'm going to the San Diego Comic Con next weekend and Mike, Kevin, and Bill are going to be there! As you may know, they're known as The Film Crew now, and they've begun releasing new episodes of them commenting on bad movies. The first so far is Killers from Space.
I don't know if they'll be signing autographs or not, but I'd like to have something MST3K related for them to sign if possible. I'm sure it's a hassle for them to have hundreds of people lining up to tell them how cool they are, but I hope there's an opportunity.
Maybe I'll bring the Tom Servo head I made and have Kevin sign it.

Anyone else going to see Rifftrax Live: Plan 9 from Outer Space?
Re: The MST3K thread, revisited
I'm seriously considering it. I saw the add at a theatre this weekend when i went to see District 9. Need to get a group together

Damn! I just find out about this before District 9 tonight (very good film by the way), and I won't be able to watch! Guess I'll have to download it or get a dvd or something whenever that comes out.
