Me too. Once you get good enough to score S Ranks in that game its nigh on impossible to not see it as the genious work of art it is.
Too bad Smilebit is no more...

RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!!!!!!
I wouldn't go so far as genius work of art... some of the opposition could stand to actually oppose you a bit more and one or two stages (glaring at Civ 3 over here) blow. Still awesome, though, and I gotta agree with cap'n that the art design rocks faces. Svart was so cool.
Vexorg, which spiders are you talking about? I haven't played the game in a while so all I really remember from Civ 2 were those annoying bugs that would like fade in and out of existance and generally make me sad.

My main problem with Gunvalkyrie is that it's hard to tell where the hell I'm supposed to be going in any given stage-I don't mind the controls much at all. Is there any in-game map that you can pull up?
It's Halo that's irritating me right now. Seriously, I've gotten to this part of the game where you can take over alien gun turrets, and it's "dark". My sniper rifle is completely out of ammo-the more I progress in this game the more I get annoyed with lack of ammo and health re-supplies. And I HATE those big wookie-like guys who take like 100 shots to kill!

If you mean the Brutes in Halo 2, shoot them in the head with a non-plasma weapon (Covenant carbine, battle rifle, etc) to take em down, if you mean Halo... what wookies? >_>
Press the white button in GV to bring up a map. Not the best map ever but it helps a bit.

No, I'm talking about these large creatures in Halo 1, I don't even own 2 yet. They flash with light when you start shooting them.
And by melee attack, do you mean pistol-whippin' enemies with whatever weapon I have? If so, I may have to try that approach.

True, but as much as the enemies move around in Halo (1) it's very difficult to do anything but shoot PART of their bodies. And I don't think you can zoom in your weapon unless it's the sniper rifle.Thunder Force wrote:Headshots are your frienddave4shmups wrote:And I HATE those big wookie-like guys who take like 100 shots to kill!

...or they're the people who give a crap about seeing where they're going while firing. Not that it matters, considering that the reticle is so damn twitchy......but oh well......to each his own, I suppose. C'mon people, seriously.....do you really think it was a great and wonderful idea to make the command for the 180-degree turn involve both friggin sticks? Let's not even get into the notion of pulling that shit off in mid-air. Yes, it can be mastered with practiced, and yes, it worked later in Crimson Skies, but this same action could be performed much more intuitively if the controls were set up differently. I doubt that anyone else here played it, but it seemed to me as if Gunvalkyrie was Charge 'N Blast 1 1/2. Play that game, then play this one, then tell me how revolutionary GV is. Of course, CnB was much more accessable since it was a Cabal-like gallery shooter...and had good controls....and was fun. As for the "genius" of the levels.....well......not really. We're talking about running around stages gunning down uninteresting, generic enemies, occasionally backtracking to hunt down that last elusive red blip. Lest we forget the bosses....well....we will actually, since no really interesting ones spring to mind. I wasn't impressed. Now, I normally don't give a shit, hell, I didn't give a crap about PN3, but don't try to tell me that programming intentionally complex controls, when others are clearly available, is what makes a game great. Honestly, I tried to like it, I really did, but there was really nothing to like.Bar81 wrote:The people who complain about Gunvalkyrie's controls are the same people who complain about not being able to shoot on the run in P.N.03. It's a crowd that just doesn't get it unfortunately for them. Guess it's GTA time for those poor souls
I call it like I see it, your results may vary.

My personal view is that intentionally giving the player well thought out limitations is part of what makes old school game design great. "Me-too" controls all too often result in "me-too" games. You need to break controls to advance genres and indeed even create new genres.Damocles wrote:don't try to tell me that programming intentionally complex controls, when others are clearly available, is what makes a game great
My problem with Gunvalkyrie was just that it was too uncomfortable to play on the large Xbox controller at the time. It literally made my hands hurt. The S model was a bit better, but really I'll be playing this one through my Dual Shock 2 adapter when I finally get around to putting serious time into it. (Nagfar's Pit - argh!)

Oh but wouldn't that just be great? No more Sega destroying their own franchises and making an almost infinite amount of shitty games?

one bit about Halo: creatures that flash while you hit them are protected by a shield. To destroy a shield you need plasma weapons. There is this plasma pistol that can charge up. It can destroy a shield with one hit, just change to pistol afterwards and finish them.
In Halo 2, you can do this easier by equipping a plasma weapon together with a regular ammo weapon.

Are those of you who are experiencing pain playing GV with the newest XBOX controller--the one with the two memory card slots? Because I've had hand pains from playing games before, but NEVER with GV. And I LOVE this XBOX controller, hell, the D-Pad on it is bigger then d-pad's I've seen on much older console controllers.captain ahar wrote:just played GV again last night. i had forgotten about the hand pains. i can only get a C on level one, but man has it been awhile. also, can't figure out the Haley Attack, off to gamefaqs!

I never really get hand cramps with many games, just Dead or Alive.
