Go and play Silpheed: The Lost Planet, and use Napalm Bombs as the weapons all the time (especially if you unlocked it right before stage 2)

Yeah, its crap though.

The last levels aren't that easy either, they're bloody annoying because of the broken perspective.

Haha yeah, I've quite literally cracked a T.V. over that one. I haven't even come close to 1cc-ing ANY R-Type let alone super R-Type. Then again I've never played r-type final and I pretty much blow at hori-shmups...
As maddening as it gets, especially with its ball-busting lack of checkpoints and unpredictable slow-down-induced jerkiness, I feel like I'm finally starting to get over the hump with its difficulties. The R-Type games (along with X-Multiply and Konami's Xexex) are so damn satisfying as artistic achievements that I feel compelled to give them my all (even if I end up smashing the TV or crying myself to sleep).

I'm trying my best to not approach Super R-Type as a strict memorizer (which is probably NOT the greatest idea, but it will hopefully force me to improve my reflexes). I'm stuck at the fifth boss (giant moving wall thing) and his obstacle course of death. I've never seen a game that tries to fuck you up with an excess of speed power-ups before. Very cool.

I've also been casually messing with a lot of the games on Taito Legends II and the two Capcom Collections discs for PS2 and really can't imagine how hard it must be to 1cc some of those titles. The Three Wonders shooter Chariot is absolute insanity and games like Eco Fighters, Darius Gaiden, and Metal Black are all pretty tough as well. I'll feel like I've arrived if I ever blast through some of those titles.

16-bit console shmups are great for this. Could I recommend Thunder Force III or IV, Lords (or Gate) of Thunder, or Nexzr? Those are all a lot of fun to play through in my opinion.

There's also Fire Shark, which isn't too hard (at least the Genesis one isn't)

I forgot to mention G-Darius. The PS1 port is very easy due to the slowdown. (The difficulty goes up significantly if you use an emulator.)

That's another one that's included in the PS2 Taito Legends II. I'm not sure if it has any slowdown, but I would imagine not. I haven't tried playing it with any degree of seriousness because I want to beat the older Darius games I have first (Darius Twin, Super Nova, Darius Gaiden).

No slowdown, quite the opposite in fact. It goes faster than the actual PCB, making some of the boss patterns and such quite a bit harder.

PLEASE TRY EXED EXES. There are 16 unique levels before it loops. Thank you.

I bought the PSP Capcom Collection this is on almost expressly for playing Knights of the Round with my fiancé. Hadn't given it more than a glance...but since you're advocating for it so politely, how can I resist? :D

Darius Gaiden is actually quite easy if you take the right path (kind of like life itself) Practice ABDHLQV a bit and you should have a fairly easy 1cc.

Those old Capcom titles are certainly big on having loads of stages, no. Has anyone ever tried to 1-cc the arcade version of 1942? I'm really glad the PS2 collection allows you to shut off the music. 32 stages of snare drum and whistle...no thanks.

Varth and Section Z also looked to be pretty long.

Varth is pretty damn long (50 minutes or so, was it?) but Section Z is short; it only takes about 15 minutes. The first loop, that is. I'm not actually sure if it loops indefinitely or not, I never got around to clearing the second loop.

Only with autofire. I'd put it around medium difficulty otherwise.
Of course, that's just an opinion.
Always seeking netplay fans to play emulated arcade games with.

TRUTH. I tried playing it with hardware autofire recently and the difference is huge. This seems to be true of most Darius games. They just wanted to kill your hands/drain your wallet. And still I wuvs dem.

I seem to recall someone on this board has done it . .
EDIT: gameoverDude and javel have done it.

Rios! He gave me a hell of a time at first, but you can kill him pretty quickly with the wave cannon. It's been a while, but I think it's fastest if you time it so you have a fully-charged shot ready to point-blank with when he first becomes vulnerable. Fall back and hit him with further charged shots as he retreats through his maze, just don't change them up all the way, since you don't want the diffusion effect when you're further away.

Irem must like this guy, since they brought back variations of him in Gallop and R-Type III.

Well I finally did it. Thanks for all the replies, I ended up 1cc'ing Death Smiles with a measly score of 69 million but atleast I did it. It's only my 2nd day with the game so know im going to work on improving the score. The game is awesome on the Naomi Universal:
