Watching the video - it looks like avoiding the first spray relies on Tavia's ability to destroy bullets with her melee attack.

Yes, but it's possible without it. IlMrm's post above explains the alternate tactics. I don't think I have any video of the second method he posted, but I do have Triple Lei's.

You are correct. It's quite cool when you pull it off too.

Slightly higher chain.

IlMrm - 57 - Marion

It ended at stage six with the pots. I used a bomb to destroy all the pots, then greed set in and I stumbled into another coin while trying to get a coin.

What a rush!

1,561,200 - IlMrm - Marion - 2-3

2-1 was Japan, 2-2 Italy, 2-3 was England. I was hoping to get far into England, but I blew all my bombs at the Italy boss(damn those extending arms).

And I finally figured out how to do the beginning of 1-7 at full rank. Requires really slow, precise tapping starting from the left all the way to the right, and hope your homing shots take care of most of the baddies.

Thanks. :) It was around 1.32+ million. My highest ever after 1-7 was 1.34+ million.

I have been having a few games of GB2 a day for a couple of weeks now and it just eats me alive. I find it an incredibly hard game. How much time did you guy invest before you could beat the first loop.

For a while I was stuck in the "hump" for me which is the stage four and stage five boss. But once that were figured out, it got much easier. So I would say a good two months of consistent playing. I played a hell of a lot when the forum went down back then.

I keep mentioning this, but I was motivated from watching the Japanese guys play this game. I started playing this real seriously after I got back.

That does indeed seem motivating. Are there videos of the game being played well available anywhere? I had a look on the tracker but there doesnt seem to be anything. My score is slowly creeping up though!

1,510,100 - cigsthecat - Tavia - 2-3

USA was 2-2, so I'm fairly proud to have made it to the 2-3 boss anyway. Also died with 8 bombs near the end of 1-7. (lovely)

The other day I lifed to 2-2, I was all giddy, then oh cruel fate 2-2 was USA.

The second loop USA boss(especially the second form) is a real bastard. Every attack in its second form is hard(especially when it shoots its arm guns). And that goddamn cactus field.

Cigs have you no miss no bomb the first round yet? The best I've done is have seven bombs left in stock(used one in 1-6 boss, and 1-7 boss).

Nope. I really don't know why I just can't manage it, I've got the knowledge and ability. Stringing it all together is proving to be quite the task. Best I've done is no miss, no bomb up to the 3-2-1 enemies at the very end of 1-7. What a dumb place to die!

I lifing to 2-2, that's impressive. Way to go.

Thanks. I know what you mean. There are so many spots where the margin of error is tiny. Damn precise tappings and positionings.

Had a good first round run, and finally cracked 1.6 mil.

1,603,200 - IlMrm - Marion - 2-3

Ended at USA of course.

There's a safe spot on the second round Japan boss(the first form). After wiping out the turret/gun pods on both sides, if you go to the upper-left corner, those two sprays will not even come close to you. At first I tried going to the upper-right, but the second spray hit me. I always thought those two sprays are aimed. One bomb saved, since at full rank and me not at full power I always bomb.

And I swear the second form when the robot releases those pods(which shoots and have suicide bullets) and then shoots the quick bullets is impossible.

Great job. Yeah, that's the spot I use. After the white spreads are done you move to the center top until that part's over.

For the second form you need to kill it before it releases the pods, that part IS impossible. You should be riding on top of it the whole time, backing off when needed to dodge the second needle spread that would hit you. Tavia can whack the hand as it releases those, wiping out most of the bullets.

Got a new chain at three in the morning while making replays. I don't know how the hell the Arcadia record holder gets 190+.

IlMrm - 67 - Marion

"Could've" gotten 70 if I bomb the beginning of 1-7, instead I don't know why I try to dodge and overtapped into a bullet. Bomb the hell out of the 1-6 pots. Actually have this on tape.

Finally made a replay where finishing the first round with seven bombs in stock. Then I get hit by a suicide bullet in the beginning of 2-1 with seven in stock. Friggin lovely.

Learn something new...

The USA boss's top center part(the part that spits out the big red bullets) can be destroyed. Makes the battle easier. But it's tricky to avoid all the crap it shoots while you overlap him.

Half a second away from 2-4. I knew I had to destroy the Japan boss robot form before the impossible part, so yo-yoed, yo-yoed, bomb, yo-yoed, and the boss was blinking red red, then the SOB released the orbs which absorbed and blocked the shots that were gonna destroy it. Then it released about a hundred bullets and I think I got hit by about eight of them at the same time.

I discovered this myself last night. With Marion I move up next to that part immediately after I kill all the drone enemies, and hit that piece with her charge shot as soon as I get in position. Usually this will destroy it; but if it doesn't, a few more normal shots should do it. Right as it blows up, the boss should shoot 2 lines of bullets from each side below you. They're aimed, and you can dodge them by just tapping up a bit. After they pass I find it easier to just move left around the boss, which should get you clear of anything it shoots.

I have no idea how well this would work on the 2nd loop.

I did have some luck moving straight down after the first tap up dodge, but I'm not consistent with that timing at all.

Ok, a bit of experimentation tonight...I _think_ I got the settings right for my normal 1-3. There's a bit of choppiness, this doesn't happen when I play, so there's nothing suspect going on. (I used MAME and recorded an INP file, played it back and used Fraps to grab some footage. The disk in that machine sucks, so it chugs a bit when it first accesses it)

I'm fairly consistent with this now:

Thanks for posting the video. On 1-3, I take out the two turrets on both sides, then play chicken at the bottom.

I don't think I'll take out the top turret on 1-3. On 1-1, definitely. :D

Got a slight higher chain.

IlMrm - 70 - Marion

Had USA as 1-3, which was quite a thrill as usual. Used three bombs on the 1-6 part with the pots to get the coins.

is marion known to be faster on arcade than on dreamcast?

because she is in the ps2 version, almost as fast as alukard, at least in the pal ver.
i hope someone replies.

I played a little of the JPN PS2 version at the shmupmeet, and it seemed she's about the same speed. However there are some minor differences in certain bullet patterns, and the England Gem Head location is different. The voice actings are different too.

I wish she was a tad faster on the DC version. :(

I am in disbelief that I did this well. I've never made it to stage 5 before, but I 1-lifed to the fourth boss and made it all way to the fifth! Excitement. This is really an awesome game, maybe my favorite by Psikyo.
